About Larry & Karen Smith

Larry & Karen both grew up in the greater Portland area and have frequented the Oregon Coast for many years. We currently live in Gladstone, OR which is a suburb of Portland. Karen is an RN at Providence Portland Medical Center and Larry is Retired.

Larry & Karen Smith purchased this house in 2001

Why Larry & Karen Smith chose Coastal Oregon

In 2001 we traveled to Nehalem to answer an ad in the local paper. We immediately fell in love with the area. The very first time we drove down to the bay we saw an elk just grazing down on the bay. We loved the quiet of the neighborhood and yet we are close to everything. We struck a deal that day to buy our house and were thrilled. There is no shortage of wildlife to see including Blue Heron, Eagles who fish in the Bay and of course our resident herd of Elk.

What makes this house unique

Peaceful and quiet yet only 10-30 minutes away from everything. The one level home is convenient for all ages. The neighbors are super friendly and watch out for each other.

Well equipped house near the bay

  • 5 of 5

Very nice house near the bay. Plenty of room although I didn't need it. Well equipped with plenty of towels, kitchen needs, etc. I'll certainly consider this again on future trips to the coast.

Beautiful home with so much to offer

  • 4 of 5

This was a wonderful LARGE house in a fairly quiet costal community. The house is well supplied and well stocked with a variety of useful items like movies, beach chairs, grill, fire pit, etc. Located somewhat between a variety of popular costal locations you might have to drive a little bit to see some but you can go in any direction and find something interesting or being on the bay you also have good local options for clamming or fishing. Definitely reccomend this property, especially if you have a group who can take advantage of the extra bedrooms & bathroom (which we as only 2 didn't use). Only disadvantage I saw was a lack of privacy fencing around the backyard and no screen in the back sliding glass door; with no central cooling opening the house up at night is how you keep it cool and it would be nice to be able to open the back door too.

Owner's Response: Tanya: Thank you for your review. We had a new screen door about 2 years ago that did not hold up. We are working on getting a new one installed. The front door does have an option of opening up the top so it is just a screen which allows air to come in. Thanks, Karen & Larry Smith

Convenient location. Nice house

  • 5 of 5

We had four adults staying in this location. The house had three bedrooms so it was perfect for us. My mom stayed in the "kids" room but the bottom bunk was larger than the top so it was plenty of room for her. We found extra blankets and pillows. There were extra sheets to make the beds while we washed the ones we used. There were fans available to cool off the rooms at night. We managed to figure out the cable tv and there were plenty of movies at the house to choose from. The kitchen looked fully stocked with everything you might need but we ate out so I can't speak to how well everything worked. I had never been to the Rockaway area but the house was very close to restaurants and a short distance to the beach. I definitely love the area and would return. Karen was quick getting back to me with questions I had. This was our first time renting through this website and she made the process easy.

Very Good a lovely house in a quiet neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

We came for a study/meeting retreat. The kitchen was great, we were close to several nice grocery stores. It rained the whole time we were there, so I can't really speak for the beach. The bedrooms were nicely decorated and it was a great value for the money.

Our home is located just a short walk from beautiful Nehalem Bay. It is in a very quiet, friendly neighborhood with flat streets for bike riding. A resident herd of Elk roam the area and occasionally meander into the neighborhood. Close by is a clean 7 mile beach in Manzanita. This quaint little town is home to shops, restaurants, a pub and a small grocery store. Neahkahnie Mountain is just a short drive down 101 and the view from the top is spectacular! The town of Nehalem is just South with antiques stores to roam and the Nehalem River with a boat launch. Just a little South of Nehalem is the town of Wheeler with a Marina for those who want to try their hand at crabbing or fishing. Fifteen minutes North of Nehalem is famous Cannon Beach where you can view Haystack Rock which abounds with sea life that can be seen at low tide. You can also go clamming at Nehalem Bay State Park or further North in the town of Seaside which is a must see for children of all ages.

Notes:
Our home is very comfortable with a very well stocked kitchen with everything you need for cooking or baking other than the ingredients. The neighborhood is quiet and kid friendly. Pets do need to be on a leash. We are a 5 minute drive to a beautiful, quiet 7 mile beach in the quaint town of Manzanita. Cannon Beach is 15 minutes down the road and features tons of shopping, restaurants and the famous Haystack Rock. Try to get out to the rock at a minus tide to explore all the sea life! The popular town of Seaside is just a 30 minute drive. It features small shops, a beach known for clamming and Outlet Stores. If you head South you will go through the towns of Nehalem, Wheeler, Rockaway and Garabaldi. Crabbing is great at any of the marinas. A little further South is Tillamook where you can do all your shopping for groceries at Fred Meyer. The town of Wheeler has a marina and many antique stores. For hikers you will love the view at the top of Neahkahnie Mountain.
