I was traveling with my husband for work and we had one night that was not covered as part of the conference. We were unaware that the end of the cherry blossom festival was the same weekend we were arriving and everything was booked. I reached out to Alison on a whim and was thrilled when she mad room for us! She too was full but for the one night we were needing accommodations. She could have told us no to give her and her crew more time between stays and people, but she was very gracious.
The house was so much more than the pictures. It was beautifully renovated, very clean, and the bed was way comfortable. The location was very safe and the neighborhood was walkable and lovely. It really was downtown! You read some descriptions and people say downtown but they really mean close to downtown. Oh no, this was walking distance to so much! It was perfect.
Additionally, there was a great guest binder that had info about the Metro, menus for good restaurants, and maps. Plus there were baskets full of tourist guides, books, and maps. We had everything we needed at our fingertips.
We found Alison to be kind, trustworthy, and a fabulous host! We're looking forward to returning for another trip later this year.
This property worked great for our family of four. It was well-maintained, very clean and provided all the kitchen and bathroom amenities required for our stay. Our teenagers had there own beds in the basement TV room, one on the fold-out couch and the other on a futon. The bedroom provided a comfortable Queen size bed.
The owner provided great advice on restaurants and directions to attractions. The Eastern market restaurants and Metro station are about a 7 or 8 minute walk. The Capital is about a 13-15 minute walk. Also, a handy Bikeshare rack is only a block away.
We definitely recommend this property and would stay there again if we have an opportunity.
I can't say enough about Alison and the house so I'll make it short and sweet. The house was very clean comfortable and stocked with everything you need. It is located in a great family friendly neighborhood, and is literally within walking distance to everything you need or might need. From a grocery store, to awesome hole in the wall food joints, to Metro, and of course the CVS if you bring the kids. We had a very good time and would stay here again if and when we visit DC again.
We had a wonderful time at Alison's house in Capitol Hill. It is really close to everything! The house was very well equipped for our family and we were even able to rent a pack and play so that we didn't have to cart one on the train. (we rode Amtrak up Thursday and went home Friday) The house is on the small side, but it was perfect as a place to crash, and really, with so much to do we couldn't imagine spending any more time than we did at the house.
There were ample dishes and pots and pans. There was a drip style coffee maker (and some extra coffee when we stayed), a dishwasher, tons of books, and some games that our children played. The house is just a few minutes from a Harris Teeter, and there was a grocery style cart in the basement, which I didn't use, but thought I would note that it was there.
The bathroom was clean and had plenty of towels along with shampoo and conditioner and body wash. The bedroom was a decent size with a queen bed, but I will warn you that if you are very light sensitive you might want to bring a mask. Usually light bothers me, but I was so tired from all the walking we had done that I was able to sleep through it. Our three older children slept in the basement room where there was a pull out couch, a futon, and a blow up mattress. We didn't use the blow up mattress, but the kids said that the other beds were very comfy.
There is only one drawback to the house and that is the steps inside and it is only a drawback if you have a young mobile child. The basement is accessed using a spiral staircase, which my older children loved. Also the main floor of the house has several different levels to it. This would not have been a deal breaker to me had I known about it ahead of time, but I think it's nice to know.
We had a great time staying at the Castle on the Hill- walking to restaurants and grocery stores, and even to our tour of the Capitol building! Alison keeps the house very tidy, well stocked, and everything about our stay was comfortable and easy. Thanks again, Alison and AJ, for giving us the opportunity to stay in your lovely neighborhood- being in a residential area instead of a hotel made it a special vacation!
The property is good for 2/4 people. Kitchen has everything needed. The coffee machine with the coffee beans was a blast! Thanks Alison!.
AC worked fine. Maybe a little bit chilly in the front part.
The location is really perfect. There is a store 3 mins walking to the south very convenient.
