About Richard Standke

Owner of 4 homes directly across from Richardson's Beach Park and 3 ocean front homes in Paradise Park. I manage these homes personally with my cell number available to all guests. Payments are handled through the security of the Homeaway/VRBO site. Guests also receive information on restaurants, shopping and my favorite places to visit.

Other Hilo homes at Richardson's Beach Park include VRBO Listing #27642, VRBO Listing #3948511haVRBO Listing #3948514ha and VRBO Listing #4035464ha. About a mile away from this house I have a couple Paradise Park homes at: VRBO Listing #453162 and VRBO Listing #397903. I always keep the calendars updated.

Richard Standke purchased this house in 2012

Why Richard Standke chose Hawaii

There are many low priced properties in Hilo. This house is larger than most with plenty of room so spread out. It house is spotlessly clean and in great condition. Paradise Park is South of Hilo enough to enjoy a real Hawaiian neighborhood but close enough to be at a Hilo restaurant in 25 mintutes. Enjoy a sunrise unlike you have ever had. Cook a great breakfast and enjoy it on the patio or my moving the furniture near the ocean cliffs.

What makes this house unique

House is just 3.5 miles from Downtown Hilo on the South side of Hilo Bay. It is at the end of a small beach road across the street from Richardsons Beach Park, the best known beach park on this side of the Island. Not well known, Hilo has more tourist destinations than any Hawaiian destination. These include:

*Historic Downtown with shops and restaurants on the Bay.

* Waterfalls right in town. Rainbow Falls and Boiling Pots.

* Akaka Falls just 25 minutes North of Hilo

* Volcano National Park, just 35 minutes above Hilo

* Hawaiian Botanical Gardens. One of the nicest gardens you will find.

* Hilo Farmers Market. Everyday but largest on Wednesday and Saturday.

* Liliuckalani Gardens at Hilo Bay including Coconut Island.

* Lyland museum for historic information and geologic rocks.

* Tsunami museum housed in a historic bank

* Wine tasting at the Volcano Winery

* Beer tasting right in town at Hawaii Nui Brewery

* Coffee tasting at Hilo Coffee Mill on your way to the Volcano

* Hilo Zoo. Free and very pretty.

* Mauna Loa Nut company self guided "look through window" tour and gift shop. Free and nice shop for lunch and ice cream.

* Historic Palace Theatre downtown. Check internet for show dates.

* Nearby to Pahoa town, near active lava flows.

*Continue on to Ahalanui Park's warm pond and then snorkle at Champagne Ponds (tidepools) in Kapoho.

* Venture South beyond Volcano National Park to Punaluu County Park for lots of black sand and full time lounging turtles.

* Continue South for Punaluu Bake shop and South Point Road. Incredable vistas from the most Southern point in the U.S.

* Go North along the beautiful Hamakua coast and go horseback riding in Waipi'o Valley.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We wanted a pretty and quiet place to enjoy the views and this is exactly what we got. We spent hours with wine and food enjoying the ocean spray off the rocks. I would have loved to stay for another week.

Amazing View and Heavy Traffic

  • 3 of 5

The house is exactly as it appears in the pictures. A little dated but completely adequate. The main reason we booked this house was the view - it sits directly on the cliffs with a spectacular view of the ocean. You hear the roar of the ocean all day. The downside was the traffic. This property is approximately 7 miles from Hilo off of a main roadway identified as the 130. The traffic is brutal! It takes 40 to 60 minutes to get into Hilo. No way to avoid the traffic as it is the only road. Nothing in walking distance - no coffee, restaurants, beach etc. If you want to do anything you have to get on the 130.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review. I strive for consistent 5 star review so a 3 star review is quite a shock. The traffic isn't normally bad. Last year they completed a road widening expanding the two lanes farther down the 130. When I travel between 5 and 6 in the evening there can be a 10 minute delay, but that is the only time since the widening that I have had a delay. Maybe that week is when school started to it was an exception. Many rentals are farther south. I consistently spend only 25 minutes to and from Hilo.

Great location

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at this home, but it was very hot. There was no air conditioning (which we knew) but we couldn't keep the sliding glass doors open at night because there were holes in the screens (and many warnings that it wasn't safe to leave doors open at night) and the two large windows on the water did not open. Would be great if the owners invested in new windows with screens for the two large windows on the water so there would be a breeze at night. Also, no curtains or shades on the sliders which heated up the house quite a bit during the day. It would have been a lot cooler if we could keep the sun out during the day when we were not in the house anyway. The master suite upstairs was very hot as it was in the loft and only had one small window.

Owner's Response: I'll get the screens fixed right away and some shades installed. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Very easy fixes.

Stayed for a month and the interior was very adequate. Great location and quite close to the lava cliffs.

Unfortunately, the exterior is another story. The screens to the lanai were removed after a call to Richard, but never replaced while I was there. Also, the roof and gutters need major work. And lastly, a good portion of the wooden floor on the lanai needs replacement.

Loved it. Absolutely awesome view! Roomy and comfortable for our party of three.

  • 4 of 5

This property was sweet and we were happy to find it. We brought our Mom here to Hawaii for a two week trip, half in Hilo and half I Kona to celebrate her 80th birthday. Loved the tropical beauty of the Hilo side. Our quiet and relaxed stay at Richard's property was a highlight. We sat on the deck as often as the weather would allow..star gazing was nice when we had clear sky's. We enjoyed the awesome storm that swept in one night. Sky bright and shiny the next morning.

The house is a little well used but clean, comfortable and charming. We each had our own bedroom! We are not picky people, charm outweighs Home and Garden perfection.

Richard was a helpful host, returning email promptly, delivering a new coffee pot when ours stopped working. Every thing was in good working order, other than Mr. Coffee..

We appreciated the good email information and the helpful notebook at the house about things to do, sights to see and services.

We would be delighted to return for another stay in the future.

Awesome location right on the water

  • 4 of 5

Such a neat location right on the water. It was fun to wake up and watch the waves crash up on the jagged lava rock coast. We enjoyed watching the sunrise on the huge porch in the morning. Beds were a little firm and the place could use a little updating.

Thanks for letting us stay!!

Right on the Ocean!!!!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent 2 weeks at The Palms. We both wish we were still there. It had everything we needed for a great vacation. It is close enough to both Hilo and Volcano's National Park so going sightseeing was never an issue. We even went golfing at Hapuna Golf Course (on the Kona side of the island) and make it back for dinner. The house is just like the pictures, very comfortable and clean (Thanks Renee). The master bedroom is upstairs and even though the house does not have air conditioning we did not miss it. Being right on the ocean, opening up the windows brings a nice cooler breeze through the house. Everything we needed for cooking was there. The lava cliffs are a sight to see. The waves crashed up most of the time we were there. We saw whales (really close) and sea turtles!! The neighbors are very friendly, pointing out the whales when we weren't paying attention. Grabbing a cup of coffee (or wine) and sitting out on the lanai was one of my favorite past times. The view of the ocean and coastline is something I will treasure. Thank you Richard for a vacation we will not soon forget.
