Welcome to our year-round cabin, “Dakota View”, on the Minnesota side of Lake Traverse. The name says it all as the cabin features beautiful, scenic views of the South Dakota hills and islands across the lake.
Our clean, cute and comfortable cabin is very versatile and a great place for:
* Vacationing families of all ages
* Groups of fishermen or hunters
* Ladies who want to have a “Girls' Getaway Weekend”
* Family reunions or get-togethers
* Out-of-towners who need lodging for local weddings, class reunions, or holiday gatherings
Built in 2003, our single-story cabin sits on a flat, 75’ wide lot, on a dead-end road, literally just steps from the lake. With over 1,800 square feet, there are four bedrooms and it sleeps up to nine people.
* The largest bedroom has a king-size bed and French doors that open out to the lake and patio area. There's plenty of space for a crib in this room if you have a baby.
* The second bedroom also has a king-size bed.
* The third and fourth bedrooms each have two twin beds.
* There is also a twin hide-a-bed in the living room.
Since we know how important it is to have a good night’s sleep, especially when you’re on vacation, all of our bedroom mattresses are brand-name and high quality. We also only use 300 thread-count linens.
There are two bathrooms in the cabin – one with a full tub/shower combo and the other with a shower. We also have a washer and dryer to accommodate guests.
The fully-equipped, well-appointed kitchen has all the comforts of home, including a dishwasher and microwave. The spacious dining room table seats eight people – the perfect place to eat all those fish you catch! Our favorite part of the cabin is the lakeside living room. It has five huge picture windows, making for breathtaking, panoramic lake views.
We have Dish TV (200+ channels) and as well as free Wi-Fi so our guests will be able to stay connected during their stay.
Outside the cabin, there’s a gas grill and lakeside fire pit to enjoy after a fun day on the lake. Guests have full use of our dock and boat lift, plus a swimming raft and paddle boat too (all available from approximately late April to late September).
Please note that we do NOT allow pets on the property, but exceptions may be made for hunters who want to bring their hunting dogs, keeping them kenneled in the garage.
Lake Traverse is a highly-regarded walleye lake. According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the 2012 survey of the lake averaged 42 walleyes per gill net lift (normal range for this class of lake is 3.2-15.3). You fisherman will appreciate what an incredible number that is! Lake Traverse is the 12th largest lake in the state, with over 11,500 acres. The lake also has nice numbers of other species for a high quality fishing experience.
Because it’s a 'Border Lake', with Minnesota/South Dakota state line running right down the middle of the lake, the fishing season opens here on April 23rd, 2016, a full three weeks before the regular Minnesota fishing opener (May 14th, 2016), so you can get a jump on the fishing season. Lake Traverse also follows South Dakota's regulation that allows you to fish two lines legally.
Our cabin is conveniently located just a few lots down from one of the lake’s public accesses, which is especially nice for ice fishing or snowmobiling in the winter.
In addition to fishing, there is plentiful public hunting land nearby, with dozens of Waterfowl Production Areas and Wildlife Management Areas within a 10-30 minute drive. Wildlife such as deer, pheasants, ducks, geese, and turkeys are abundant in the area.
Dakota View is located away about 10 miles from Browns Valley, MN, and 13 miles from Wheaton, MN. Lake Traverse is just a few miles north of Big Stone Lake, another popular destination in western Minnesota. In terms of bigger cities, it's about:
* 3.5 hours from Minneapolis, MN
* 1.5 hours from Fargo, ND
* 2.5 hours from Sioux Falls, SD
Although we're located in a small-town/rural setting, all the basic amenities you need can be found nearby: grocery and hardware stores, restaurants (sit-down and fast food), convenience stores, bait shops, a movie theatre, a public outdoor heated swimming pool, a bowling alley, a public nine-hole golf course - all without the craziness that’s typical of the bigger tourist areas. That’s one of the reasons we love it out here so much; it’s peaceful and low-key.
We only rent our cabin to those who are responsible, courteous and will leave it in the condition that they found it in. A lot of hard work has gone into our cabin and we ask that guests respect it by treating it as if it were their own home. Thank you for understanding.

What do a chemical engineer, advertising exec and grain farmer all have in common? They own Dakota View Cabin! We are three family members who love being at the lake – all for different reasons. One loves to fish. One loves to boat and jet ski. And one just likes to relax and enjoy the view.
As owners we are very involved and hands-on, actively managing our property and rental business. You can rest assured knowing that we take great pride in our property and making sure that everything is as perfect as possible for our guests so they can enjoy themselves and can have a wonderful experience.
Jessica Mathias purchased this cabin in 2011
Two of us grew up in Traverse County and have always known what a hidden gem Lake Traverse is. When this property became available we decided to go ahead and fulfill our dream of owning a lake home. It had everything we were looking for: a spacious home with a great layout, plenty of storage space in the three car garage/shop, lots of windows with spectacular views, awesome fishing, mature trees, nice neighbors, plus it was close to family and friends...it was perfect!
We just love the open feel of the cabin and how close it sits to the water's edge. When you walk out the lakeside door you're on the dock within a few seconds. Even when you're sitting in the living room, it feels like you're outside with all of the large windows. You will find yourself just staring out the windows, admiring the panoramic view. It's incredible!
Comfortably slept 7 adults and 2 children. Fun games, kitchen ware essentials, internet access, laundry. Very relaxing stay!
My family loved our time here at Dakota View lodge. Warm hospitality, wonderful views and just overall relaxing, enjoyable and great time! We plan on renting this again at some point down the road!
We had a magnificent sunset and it was so relaxing sitting on the dock watching as the day slipped away.
Thank you again!
Wonderful views of sunrises and sunsets. Relaxing atmosphere
Very relaxing time spent with family. The cabin was very spacious and super clean. Gorgeous view and short distance to the lake. We love to fish, and caught lots of walleye for a delicious fish fry to end the week. End of June weather was great, just tad bit windy on the lake. Overall, gorgeous cabin and perfect getaway!
The cabin was even better than the pictures on the website. We had our entire family there and all rated the stay a big hit. We are planning on going again next year. The cabin was clean, the instructions/ expectations from the owners were clearly stated. Jessica is clearly a person who is intent on the guests having an enjoyable stay. She answered any questions that we had. Her attention to detail even provided an alphabetical listing as to what: utensils/ pots, pans/glasses were in the kitchen. For being August, I had reservations as to how the fishing would be, but we caught all kinds and varieties of fish right of the dock, and will make the cabin hall of fame for a variety of species. The view was awesome, and it was so peaceful and serene, that I can honestly say that this was the most relaxed I have felt for 20 years. Thank you for the wonderful experience. Grocery store, and bait are available in just a short drive from the cabin. Hope to be there in 2017

We came here for 4 days for a mini vacation with the family. The cabin is very modern and well kept. The sunroom and kitchen are great! We really had no issues except the king size bed in the one room was too soft for our liking, and we could not get the Dish remote to change channels, so we just changed them from the TV itself. We think it was because of low batteries. We emailed Jessica and she was quick to respond, but there were no batteries on hand. But, aside from that, had a GREAT time! The lake is beautiful! We enjoyed waking up to the view every morning! We used the paddleboat quite a bit and swam. Probably not the best for small children, since it is a rocky shore. The dock is great for just sitting and fishing off! They have quite a few board games to play and movies(mostly for adults). There are a ton of kitchen utensils/pots and pans, etc. to use, you should not need to bring any along! The back patio is great for relaxing and we also used the fire pit for smores at night. Just beware of mosquitos after dusk! If you bring a boat, the ramp is not far away for loading and unloading and you have your own private dock which is great! Cell phone reception in the house is touch and go, but you just have to step outside and its great! The Wifi also worked great! No issues! We did not venture out to local towns, but stayed by cabin and relaxed! We loved staying here and hope to come back again!
