I have lived in Berkeley & Oakland for over 40 years and love Northern California. It is my pleasure to share my knowledge of the area and suggest interesting places for guests to explore and experience.
Scott Selmanoff purchased this house in 2002
This property is our primary residence. We have upgraded all the systems, gas, water, sewer, electrical, heating, ducting, electronic and lovingly kept the original architecture intact. We rent the top two floors and live downstairs with a separate entrance. We share the washer/dryer which is downstairs in our unit.
Private location and fantastic views. It's like being in the country in the city with all the amenities. Lots of trees and birds. Five minute walk to Peets coffee, Rick & Anns Restaurant, Bakery, shops and Claremont Resort & Spa.
Rent this for the spectacular view! ... and well-appointed kitchen, and cozy beds, and the short walk to Peet's Coffee and Fournée Bakery. Scott is a terrific host, ready to do whatever is needed to make it a great stay for his guests. We had a wonderful time.
To summarize it: we had a fabulous stay here. We enjoyed every moment, the lovely, well equipped house, the quiet after coming back from our field trips, the wonderful iew, the delicious smell of flowers and eucalyptus!
This lovely house is near UC Berkeley, 1 mile from the Rockridge BART, and a 15 minute walk to the shops and restaurants in the Elmwood district. You are in the Berkeley hills, just above the Claremont Hotel, on one of the walkways unique to Berkeley, in the center of so much but surrounded by quiet. I agree with another reviewer - the smells are fantastic and uniquely Californian. We stayed for one week with our 10 year old son and found this location to be perfect for exploring the Bay Area.
You must be able to climb the 58+ stairs to the house -- it's completely worth it!! Scott is a generous host. The house is historic, with all the important updates, clean, and so well stocked.
Each morning you wake up to an amazing view of San Francisco, the Bay and Golden Gate Bridges. It's fascinating to watch the view change throughout the day. There is ample parking on the street below.
When we return to the Bay Area, we will definitely return to Scott's house.
Scott's house is as advertised. He helped us out when we arrived and provided a lot of local advice. It is a very comfortable house with amazing views - the pictures on the web site do not do it justice. It is comfortable for 2 couples and one extra person. The kitchen is very well stocked. There is a long set of stairs to get to the house. This is a fairly standard situation on California hillsides. We saw lots of little kids going up and down and it didn't bother us because we are all in pretty good shape. That being said, it would be difficult for an elderly person, or someone with any sort of physical limitation.
There is a great restaurant and bakery a ten minute walk at the bottom of the hill. Berkeley, Claremont, and Oakland are all minutes away in a car. We had a great week.
Our family really enjoyed staying during graduation week. It was such a nice place to enjoy spending time together rather than in a hotel room. We spent a lot of time on the deck enjoying the views at all times of day and evening. The landscape smells fantastic too. The kitchen has been updated and it was a pleasure to use. It included everything we needed and is beautiful as well.
The owner was very welcoming and accessible when we had questions.
There are stairs mentioned in the description, and it's true. You must be able to climb stairs to get to the house but it's well worth it. As long as you don't have any physical limitations, it's a great place to stay. The home was absolutely beautiful and we'd love to return sometime! Thanks for making our time in Berkeley a very memorable one.
We stayed here for a month in June and July 2013 and had a great time. The house was perfect for us with 3 adults and a young child. As long as everyone is ok climbing a few stairs then you are rewarded with a beautiful house and an incredible view. The house is halfway up a hill so there are some stairs, but our 3.5yr old did it no problem. It really did feel like you we're out of the city while being 5 minutes from some great areas in Berkeley and Oakland. Free parking was never a problem on the street at the bottom of the stairs.
Scott has done a great job restoring the house and was very welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. We felt welcome immediately, right down to having some toys on hand for our son.
The house was just as it appears in the photos, except the view is way better than the photo conveys. You can see the whole bay and it is fun to watch any time of day. I'd still be standing there if we didn't have to get home.
We had a great visit and would not hesitate to stay here again if we are ever back in the area, can't recommend it enough.
