Crescent City House Rental Photos and Description

6 Bedrooms/6 Baths With Unmatched River And Redwood Views

Nestled in the heart of redwood country and perched atop the high banks of the nationally known wild and scenic Smith River lies the historic Woodmoor Gables Lodge. This beautifully renovated 1939 redwoods retreat has 360-degree views of the tallest trees in the world and the Smith River. Wake up to views of the river and to the sound of it rushing by. Enjoy your coffee in the sunroom or dine in the evenings facing sunsets as the river meanders to the mighty Pacific Ocean.

Our family’s river front gathering place is located directly adjacent to Redwood National and State Parks, in Hiouchi, California, just 15 minutes east of Crescent City and the beautiful Pacific Ocean. Known for sunny summer days and cool evening nights, Hiouchi is considered the area’s gateway to the redwoods, and Woodmoor Gables is the premier riverfront rental property.

The house sits on 1.3 acres of sprawling lawns, gardens, lily ponds and fountains and has a private deck and small orchard. The architecture is reminiscent of the 16th-century Tudor period, providing a classic ambiance with all the modern comforts to make your stay in the heart of the redwoods memorable and relaxing.

Woodmoor Gables has been extensively renovated using top of the line finishes including granite counters, granite tile and maple hardwood flooring throughout as well as all new appliances, handcrafted maple cabinetry, lighting and furniture. An open floor plan and new windows in every room allow unobstructed views of the redwoods and Smith River.

This two-story floor plan offers incredible options to make your stay enjoyable no matter what the season. The first floor offers an expansive kitchen-dining room layout. The kitchen is furnished with a bar-height counter and chairs so you have a wide, open view of the redwoods and river while you host friends and family. The dining area features plenty of seating (with a table for 12 and room for more) to host family gatherings. After dinner, enjoy the crackle of a Northwood’s fire in the living room, while curling up on one of several couches to enjoy an evening’s conversation. The first floor also has two of the most exciting attributes of the lodge: our redwood paneled sunroom which still has the original lead framed windows and our large mahogany paneled game room featuring a regulation pool table, fireplace and 50” flat screen TV, with plenty of games and reading materials to entertain the entire family.

When you are ready for sleep, chose from our 6 tastefully decorated bedrooms:

The Master Suite: located on the second floor, king bed, private view of the river and redwoods, 50” flat screen TV with surround sound system, private walk in closest and master bath with antique claw foot tub and large granite shower

The Fountain Room: located on the second floor, queen bed, great river view, reading nook and private bath

The Redwood Room: located on the second floor, queen bed, great river view, reading nook

The Green Room: located on the second floor, queen bed, great river view, reading nook

The Twin Room: located on the second floor, 2 twin beds, garden view, vaulted ceiling

The Garden Room: located on the first floor, queen bed, private bath, garden view

The Redwoods and the Smith River are a 5 minute walk through the beautifully landscaped grounds or a short drive to the entrance of Redwood National Park. The manicured lawns and gardens are an incredible treat in the spring, summer and fall, and offer a pond, fountain, rose garden, Japanese maples, and unique trees and shrubs found nowhere else in the County. Just up the road from the Park is the quaint little town of Hiouchi, which offers large morning breakfast (Paul Bunyan Style!) and lunch plates, and a small hamlet store for obtaining groceries and gas.

Because we live locally, we can offer a great variety of suggestions to help seed your trip with places to visit and explore including hikes through the redwoods, beaches or coastal dunes, whale watching, magnificent lighthouses, horseback rides on the beaches and in the redwoods, bird watching some of the 413 plus species known to visit Del Norte County and of course fishing on the beautiful Smith River, known for its world record salmon and steelhead fishing.

We love Woodmoor Gables and invite you to enjoy the redwood’s premier lodge while traveling through the Pacific Northwest or fishing our pristine rivers. Woodmoor Gables is that perfect place for large families or groups of friends to gather for an extended stay-cation. We hope you will consider it a home where your entire family can relax and play.

Why Chris Howard chose North Coast California

Dr. Stump created Woodmoor Gables for travelers visiting the coastal redwoods in the 1950 and 60's. Woodmoor Gables reverted to a private residence in the late 70's and for the last 30 years has undergone extensive remodeling. Woodmoor Gables has been revived to find its roots as a redwood retreat, and freshly renovated with all the finest amenities to make your stay in redwood country memorable.

What makes this house unique

This 5,000 square foot retreat offers 6 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms, and is the largest accommodations for multiple families visiting the redwoods in Del Norte County. Many exciting interior home attractions such as the spacious kitchen, master suite, game room and inviting fireplace will warm your senses. Located on the beautiful Smith River just a moment’s walk or drive to the redwoods.

Beautiful home in the Redwoods with amazing views, rooms, and adventure all around.

  • 5 of 5

We booked this house for a small wedding party. When we arrived, we were in awe as the website doesn't truly portray how awesome the area around the home really is. The house had 7 rooms to sleep in (all very comfortable) and all had their own bathrooms. The kitchen is huge and has a large dining table to match so everyone can sit together and eat. Outside there is a grill, fire pit, games, fruit trees, Smith River and beautiful sights. A short, scenic drive away and you are in Jedediah Smith National and State Park where you get to see large redwoods and have tons of beautiful hiking trails to choose from. Gas station and diner is also close so you don't have to go back into Crescent City if you don't want to. Otherwise, Crescent City has stores for you to buy food and you can do your own cooking at the house. The kitchen is loading with all cooking tools you may need. Thank you Chris and Lisa for an amazing place to stay the weekend of our Redwoods Wedding! We highly recommend this place to everyone!

Absolutely perfect setting! Great for groups & families!

  • 5 of 5

Since our group of 10 was on a first cousin's retreat, we really utilized the patio, the deck overlooking Smith River, and the campfire area. The HUGE kitchen was fantastic!!! There were just a few issues with 2 of the windows & we reported that to the owner. One of the mattresses needs replacing & we also reported that to the owner. Overall, we give Woodmoor Gables a 5 star rating & wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone interested! Chris Howard is a pleasure to work with!

Beautiful beyond Belief!!

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely beautiful!!! So peaceful...the rooms are wonderful. I was there for a cousins' reunion...there are five of us on my mother's side and we all had our spouses with us, so altogether the 10 of us had the BEST time! I would recommend this place to anyone, and driving through the Redwoods to get there is like being in a fairy tale. If you have never seen the Redwoods except for pictures, no picture can do them justice. I hope my cousins decide to meet here again...I loved it!!

A historically rich and undeniablly beautiful home!

  • 5 of 5

Woodmoor Gables is a wonderful home with peaceful and comfortable accommodations. We chose this home for our first family reunion. It seems we could not have picked a more perfect location. Nestled in the heart of Redwood National and State Parks, overlooking the pristine Smith River, it offers breath-taking views of the forest and river.

The mornings were bright and beautiful and brought all family members to the spacious and well-equipped kitchen to gather and prepare our meal together. It was the perfect way to start our days. Chris and Lisa have prepared a library worth of sightseeing and other activities to choose from in this area of such natural beauty.

Our family traveled from the desert areas to this lush green forest area and did not want to leave! I know they will be back and want to stay in the wonderful home again!

Thank you to the Howards for their hospitality!

Beautiful House hidden among the rivers edge.

  • 4 of 5

Family Reunion enjoyed by all. Beautiful house hidden among the rivers edge. Gentle sounds of water over rocks. Outside area was great, bbq, fire pit, views of Redwoods, hiking, biking, rafting, walking on near by Pacific Ocean beaches. Couldn't ask for more. I would recommend this house for any large family events.
