Overview

About the property

6 Bedrooms/6 Baths With Unmatched River And Redwood Views

Nestled in the heart of redwood country and perched atop the high banks of the nationally known wild and scenic Smith River lies the historic Woodmoor Gables Lodge. This beautifully renovated 1939 redwoods retreat has 360-degree views of the tallest trees in the world and the Smith River. Wake up to views of the river and to the sound of it rushing by. Enjoy your coffee in the sunroom or dine in the evenings facing sunsets as the river meanders to the mighty Pacific Ocean.

Our family’s river front gathering place is located directly adjacent to Redwood National and State Parks, in Hiouchi, California, just 15 minutes east of Crescent City and the beautiful Pacific Ocean. Known for sunny summer days and cool evening nights, Hiouchi is considered the area’s gateway to the redwoods, and Woodmoor Gables is the premier riverfront rental property.

The house sits on 1.3 acres of sprawling lawns, gardens, lily ponds and fountains and has a private deck and small orchard. The architecture is reminiscent of the 16th-century Tudor period, providing a classic ambiance with all the modern comforts to make your stay in the heart of the redwoods memorable and relaxing.

Woodmoor Gables has been extensively renovated using top of the line finishes including granite counters, granite tile and maple hardwood flooring throughout as well as all new appliances, handcrafted maple cabinetry, lighting and furniture. An open floor plan and new windows in every room allow unobstructed views of the redwoods and Smith River.

This two-story floor plan offers incredible options to make your stay enjoyable no matter what the season. The first floor offers an expansive kitchen-dining room layout. The kitchen is furnished with a bar-height counter and chairs so you have a wide, open view of the redwoods and river while you host friends and family. The dining area features plenty of seating (with a table for 12 and room for more) to host family gatherings. After dinner, enjoy the crackle of a Northwood’s fire in the living room, while curling up on one of several couches to enjoy an evening’s conversation. The first floor also has two of the most exciting attributes of the lodge: our redwood paneled sunroom which still has the original lead framed windows and our large mahogany paneled game room featuring a regulation pool table, fireplace and 50” flat screen TV, with plenty of games and reading materials to entertain the entire family.

When you are ready for sleep, chose from our 6 tastefully decorated bedrooms:

The Master Suite: located on the second floor, king bed, private view of the river and redwoods, 50” flat screen TV with surround sound system, private walk in closest and master bath with antique claw foot tub and large granite shower

The Fountain Room: located on the second floor, queen bed, great river view, reading nook and private bath

The Redwood Room: located on the second floor, queen bed, great river view, reading nook

The Green Room: located on the second floor, queen bed, great river view, reading nook

The Twin Room: located on the second floor, 2 twin beds, garden view, vaulted ceiling

The Garden Room: located on the first floor, queen bed, private bath, garden view

The Redwoods and the Smith River are a 5 minute walk through the beautifully landscaped grounds or a short drive to the entrance of Redwood National Park. The manicured lawns and gardens are an incredible treat in the spring, summer and fall, and offer a pond, fountain, rose garden, Japanese maples, and unique trees and shrubs found nowhere else in the County. Just up the road from the Park is the quaint little town of Hiouchi, which offers large morning breakfast (Paul Bunyan Style!) and lunch plates, and a small hamlet store for obtaining groceries and gas.

Because we live locally, we can offer a great variety of suggestions to help seed your trip with places to visit and explore including hikes through the redwoods, beaches or coastal dunes, whale watching, magnificent lighthouses, horseback rides on the beaches and in the redwoods, bird watching some of the 413 plus species known to visit Del Norte County and of course fishing on the beautiful Smith River, known for its world record salmon and steelhead fishing.

We love Woodmoor Gables and invite you to enjoy the redwood’s premier lodge while traveling through the Pacific Northwest or fishing our pristine rivers. Woodmoor Gables is that perfect place for large families or groups of friends to gather for an extended stay-cation. We hope you will consider it a home where your entire family can relax and play.

Woodmoor Gables has been revived to find its roots as a redwood retreat, and freshly renovated with all the finest amenities to make your stay in redwood country memorable.

Family Reunion

  • 5 of 5

We had our family of 9 adults and 7 children (ranging in age from 1-9 years old). There were enough bedrooms and bathrooms for each family/couple to have their own space. The pack and play and high chair were such a blessing to have! There was plenty of room for the children to run around and have fun. The kitchen was completely stocked with every appliance and kitchen utensil needed. It was so nice to even have the laundry and bathroom supplies stocked for us. The pool table, board games, and shuffle board were well used. The Smith River location behind the house was a perfect spot for us to kayak, swim, and climb on the rocks. The Redwoods were a short drive away. We enjoyed Stout Grove, Boy Scout Trail, Hiouchi trail, Battery Point Lighthouse, and Endert's beach. The firepit was great for time spent together in the evenings. We also enjoyed the fireworks in Crescent City on the 4th. Chris and Lisa were gracious hosts and responded quickly to every question/need we had. They truly want their guests to enjoy themselves and are willing to do everything they can to make that happen. Such wonderful memories were made during our stay at Woodmor Gables! We would love to come back again!

Beautiful spacious property

  • 4 of 5

We take a yearly vacation with 4 other families, so finding a spacious home with lots of area for our crazy kids to run around outside was a must. This property did not disappoint! The house itself is large and I loved that all the adults had our own bathrooms! The master bedroom worked perfectly for our 18 month old who slept in his pack n play in the walk in closet where it was dark and quiet even though we were in the room. The views from the deck are amazing, and we even roasted marshmallows by the fire pit. The drive to Jedidiah Smith State Park is minutes, and we went on amazing hikes and had picnics in the redwoods, as well as going to the beach which was also just a few miles from the house. Overall our stay was fantastic. The only issue we had was that there was air conditioning downstairs, but not upstairs, so the upstairs bedrooms stayed very warm. However, we did find a fan, and that seemed to work ok. The outside area is great for kids to run around or for relaxing with adults. The kids played hide and seek and had a great time there was lots of safe area away from the road for them to play. I would definitely recommend this property!

A perfect location

  • 5 of 5

Woodmoor Gables was a wonderful 7 bedroom, 6 bathroom home that was in a prime location. Our large extended family loved the big kitchen and dining area for cooking and eating, and we loved the view from the dining room. We also loved the deck and the fire ring area outside. Most of all, we loved the location....15 minutes from Crescent City, the beach, the dunes, 5 minutes from Redwood trails, a great river below us, and hills all around. We'd highly recommend for any big group that wants to hike the gentle giants of Northwest California!

Fantastic time in Woodmoor Gables

  • 5 of 5

When we arrived, Lisa greeted us, and gave us the grand tour…and what a grand house!!!! The pictures truly do not do it justice…just know that if you decide to make this your home for any length of time, you will not be disappointed!

Kitchen/dining: it has every possible gadget and appliance. The dining area has fabulous views, and plenty of room. We talked, played games, and many memories were made around that table.

Living room: There is a huge wood burning fireplace, couches, throw pillows and blankets. My sister would go in to write in her journal, and cat nap.

Game room: my son, and granddaughters enjoyed playing pool, but my 4 year old grandson was an observer only. There were a ton of games, so he always had something to keep him amused.

Bedrooms: Each bedroom is unique-different themes, different angles of ceilings and walls, so many wonderful characteristics!! Wood paneling, the original staircase, beautiful cupboards…it was like stepping back in time, into an era of grace, beauty, and amazing workmanship.

Bathrooms: yes, there really are 6!! And each of them is supplied with soap, shampoo, conditioner, and toilet paper!

Front Yard: Beautiful flowers everywhere in front. On side near tower, you will see little hummingbirds that come for the flowers. They will actually fly around, stop right in front of you, and look you in the eye!! We loved it!!!

Back Yard: our favorite place!!! There are tables, chairs, a fire pit, a huge deck over the river, shuffleboard, beautiful little arbor with cement table and benches, and trees. We absolutely loved it out there!! Almost every night we lit a fire, roasted smores, had hot chocolate, and just enjoyed watching the sun go down. The deck was wonderful for a glass of wine after dinner, and for that morning cup of coffee! Nothing I can say truly explains the splendor back there, and the feeling of complete relaxation…both physical and emotional…just fantastic! Out of everything, for me, this back yard was one of those “healing” places that are few and far between.

Plenty to do in area: redwood hikes, Ocean World, Lighthouse, museum, etc

Lisa and Chris…thank you so much for allowing this treasure to become a home to tourists like us! Your warm welcome was so appreciated, as was the information on the history of the house. Woodmoor Gables is truly an experience in itself, and we so enjoyed our stay there. The memories we made, the places we saw.....simply amazing...

Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

So happy with spacious cottage in the redwoods! Chris and Lisa let us use the Gables for our wedding reception. We had family (14 pple!) who didn't want to camp stay in the Gables and the rest of our guests (40 pple) came the following day to celebrate with us. The Gables was absolutely perfect. The lawn was well maintained, the house was fully stocked and gorgeous, and the view of the river is breath taking. There was plenty of room for everyone. Many of our friends are planning to have their next family/friend reunions here now! Everyone loved it. Don't hesitate to rent this amazing house! I can't imagine finding a better spot. The only issue we had is that it is a little tricky to find. Do not use Nav or Google maps! For an event, label the driveway well.
