Well, another successful stay! This year we let our daughter bring a friend. They went geocaching and found one right down the road. The weather allowed for some beautiful hiking in Rough Lock Falls. Until next year!

A fun, adventuous house with a very comforting home like decor that warms the Soul!!!

  • 5 of 5

My wife's family has a reunion every 2 years and it was my wife's turn to host it. Since we live out East and they all live out West we prayed about it and decided to have it out west to make expenses cheaper in the long run. In answer to our prayer we were led to SD and in searching for a place that could hold the bunch of us we found this AWESOME HOUSE!!! I have to say what caught our attention, to rent this house, was the Happy Glow that emulated from the pictures!!! The pictures were inviting like and old friend saying come and visit with me and we did this past July of 20016! The house, decor and the Hobbit tree house has a very Home like feel to it that makes you just want to stay and enjoy the Kind and Loving Spirit that envelops this house! I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone who wants this kind of experience!!! We had a spectacular time and Gordon and Audrey were right there when we had any needs they took care of it!!! Thank You Gordon and Audrey for opening your home to us because the memories will Bless Us years to come!!! God Bless!!!

Mount Ephraim, New Jersey

One of the most beautiful scenic views and unfathomable homes I have ever seen.

  • 5 of 5

The home was immaculately kept. Owners were very hospitable, accommodating and friendly. Location was paramount based in Deadwood and close to all major attractions in South Dakota. The home has an incredible scenic view, attention to detail was made in constructing a hobbit style detached home adjacent to the main house. Absolutely incredible! Words can't describe this home and location. I will be back again renting from this great family. They have made it their mission to allow others to enjoy the spoils of their hard work and labor.

Our family stayed at the Chateau and had a wonderful, memorable family vacation. The home was excellent, and was all as advertised and more, beautifully decorated, nicely furnished and close to many activities and things to do. Our only regret was that we couldn't stay there a few days longer. Look forward to stay there again.

The Chateau makes me smile....

  • 5 of 5

When I proposed the idea of a vacation to the Black Hills my family didn't seem as excited as I. However, as we pulled up to the Chateau that all changed. Even my dad (who refuses to leave the county he was born in) was like a little kid!

We found ourselves so busy with daily activites--this location can't be beat. Monuments, museums, hiking, taking in the sites, and kid friendly activities are within an easy driving distance. Be sure to check out Sylvan Lake, Devil's Bathtub, and Reptile Gardens--some of our favorites.

Each evening we felt pure gratitude as we gathered for dinner on the deck overlooking the beautiful hills. Speaking of dinner--the house is loaded with everything you need for meal making. Bring some groceries (there's a nice grocery store in Sturgis--Lynn's Dakotamart) and you're good to go. The nightly ritual also included a soak in the outdoor hot tub, while we discussed the day and the plans for the next. Each morning coffee on the deck was abundant as we enjoyed the birds chirping, the warmth of the sun, and view of the hills. Let me just say, IT IS SPLENDID!

Onto the game room and the's like nothing I can describe. At night the treehouse becomes magical--my kiddos still talk about it. Oh, and my dad (the biggest kid) he couldn't get over it--still talks about the craftsmanship, creativity, and theme throughout. It's a cozy work of art and imagination. The game room held several shuffle-board, PAC-MAN, and racing competitions. Tons of fun for old and young!

Gordon and Audrey, you have a gem in the hills! Thank you for sharing it.

Owner's Response: WOW thank you so much for the wonderful review! With your review Audrey and I feel we have achieved our goal which started 4 years ago to bring a experience to our guests that will last a lifetime. I laughed when the kids were kids and adults became kids, that was our whole purpose for creating the Chateau. Again thank you. Gordon & Audrey

Retirement Getaway for Family

  • 5 of 5

What a great location for my Family to meet and help celebrate my Retirement.

I have always wanted to explore SD and when I found your property to rent it was perfect for our children and grandchildren to fly in from Wisconsin - S Carolina and California. We had 8 adults and 6 grandchildren ages almost 1 to 14 and they had a ball. The older 5 slept in the Hobbit House and enjoyed it so much (Gordon you did not miss a detail when building it). The lights at night were unbelievable. We had perfect weather to enjoy the deck every day and the sunsets were absolutely gorgeous. Did not expect temps to hit 100 but nothing stopped us from exploring the area and returning then at night to relax.

Perfect home for a family to spend quality time together, one of the days we just stayed there playing games inside and out with the was perfect.

Our grandchildren left with lots of great memories - thanks for making us feel so welcome.

Tremendous Anniversary Get Away

  • 5 of 5

What a great time our family had here! The weather was a little chilly at first, but the tree house was toasty when we arrived and the Chateau's fireplace was primed. We felt so welcomed! (The "Unexpected Pizza" contributed to that welcomed feeling!)

It was easy to find where we would sleep as the bedrooms each have their own particular "feel." The four girls shared the two upstairs bedrooms, the boys stayed in the tree house, our oldest chose the basement bedroom (with all the books!), and Gary and I got the main floor master bedroom. During our four nights here, we ate out only once. We brought or bought all of our food and the large frig and freezer were cold and clean. We used the oven cook delay feature on Sunday when we went to church and were able to return to lasagna, hot and ready to eat! We made pudding, pan cookies, bacon puffs, and breaded mozzarella sticks for snacks to eat while we watched all three Hobbit movies. (They also stock a set of LoTR movies .) We cleaned and used the grill--then cleaned it again.

When we had a little difficulty setting up the driving game downstairs, Gordon patiently helped with multiple phone calls until we got it right. He did the same when we had questions about the hot tub (which we nicknamed "Mt. Doom" as it bubbled and sizzled).

Although we spent most of our time at the Chateau, geeking out over the tree house and taking far too many pictures and videos, we did use one day to drive around the Black Hills, visiting Mt. Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial, and traveling the Needles Highway. There are many trails and places to visit nearby.

The laundry room downstairs is large--as are both the washer and dryer. We did multiple loads of laundry during our stay, and these machines made it so much easier to do that!

Although we didn't use them, we noticed four pull-out beds (two downstairs and one on each of the other levels) as well as a crib. There was also an ironing board and iron and multiple hair dryers. Nearly every bathroom had bar soap and shampoo available. The laundry room had detergent and dryer sheets.

Our only "complaint" was the showers. For each of us, it felt a little like stepping outside in a heavy mist and trying to get clean in it. Was there too little pressure? Did the shower heads need replacing? Regardless, it wasn't enough of a negative to dampen our enthusiasm for the overall experience.

Our children who weren't able to go this time hope they can come on a future trip.
