Great location. Instructions do not lead to the exact spot. Get there during daylight because it will be impossible to find in darkness. Kitchen needs restocking. We found a hodge podge of a very limited number of crockery & cutlery. The wifi is slower than the first generation of dialup which probably can't be helped. The caretaker means well and has been made aware of the above. I expect future guests will see better. Do go to the cliffs accessed from the back of the cemetery before Keokea beach. It's in some ways even superior to the well known lookouts. The location proved to be great for both beaches as well as the mountains.
The pictures you see describe the Bungalow perfectly. It was as beautiful as we imagined. We were looking for a cozy, comfortable and secluded place to relax and enjoy our time that we were not adventuring. This was the perfect place. It was easy access to the nearby towns, parks and beaches and no more than an hours ride to Kona. The Bungalow had everything we needed for making our meals and going to the beaches. The views were amazing, especially from the shower. The sound of the birds really made the jungle feeling complete. We visited the whole island and found this area to be our favorite. The Bungalow was the perfect stay in our new favorite place. We would highly recommend this to everyone.
We were impressed with how well the bungalow was built and how clean it was. We enjoyed the outdoor shower and didn't mind the bathroom being a few steps from the bungalow. Set in the quiet, peaceful northern part of the island, the serenity of the location was only disturbed by cattle close by one night. Though it did require a little driving since it was quite remote, there were enough beautiful spots close by to make it worth it. The towns of Kapaau and Hawi offered nice shopping and good coffee. We would recommend the bungalow to anyone traveling to the northern part of Hawaii.
My husband, 9 year old son and I stayed at the Bungalow. We had a memorable and unique experience to say the least. The place was built with nature in mind, with 2 double doors on either end of the bungalow, that gave it an airy, outdoor, relaxed feel, as well as large porches and an outdoor hallway/lanai where we spent many of our meals and talks. My son adored Mike, the co-owner/builder who happened to be there taking care of the other rentals on the property. Mike cracked open coconuts for our morning drink, showed us which fruit in the property were ready to peak, gave us a multitude of "local" recommendations from restaurants to where to see a great sunset. He even hosted a movie night with local neighbors. We had just come from Kona, and the change of scenery here, and the solitude and natural surroundings was a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of Kona. Come here if you are looking for something different than a resort or condo, if you like nature and waking up and listening to natures creatures. There's beautiful hiking 2 miles away at the Black Beach where my husband and I ran to every morning. Made a one day family trip from the look out point then hiked more on the other side of the beach. We only made it to the bench, but it goes on and on to the other valleys.
Thanks for an unforgettable experience.
I planned to take my sisters to experience the Big Island and all of the amazing variety the island has to offer and was delighted to discover this gem! While arranging a time to spend time with friends who live in Kohala, the Bungalow was suggested for our stay and I am glad it was!
Below are each of our reviews:
My experience staying at the Bungalow with my sisters was perfect. I am so grateful that it was available for us to enjoy two nights (which wasn't enough because we enjoyed it so much). I liked how close we got to be to our friends' place with their amazing pineapple farm, and the distance to Pololu Valley Overlook was perfect for the view, hike, and perspective.
The place was aesthetically pleasing, the space was comfortable and well taken care of (great deign, newly built, and clean). We loved that we were able to do laundry before hitting the road to our next destination too! I highly recommend this little place to stay and encourage anyone who wants a little place for a retreat or solitude to check into the little sweet Bungalow.
I would have to agree wholeheartedly to the original description we read about it: " Big Island Vacation Houses presents: The Bungalow. This lush, tropical oasis is located in beautiful North Kohala and offers an immersive Hawaiian experience removed from the tourist traps and bustle of other locales. In fact, it may have you believing you're a local."
one sister said: Loved the bungalow! So quaint with tons of personality! Favorite piece by far for me was the outside stone shower The details of the bungalow really made it a special place. Also really loved the hutch in the kitchen that housed silverwear, pots and pans, and the like. I could go on and on...The geckos were so fun to find all over the place as well!
other sister said: I can't wait to come back and stay for longer! This bungalow was perfect for our Hawaii get away. From the comfortable bed to the full kitchen, we had everything we could want from a place and more!
The location was perfectly situated in the hills, tucked away from everything. The wifi was fast and when we had a question about the laundry, we were kindly helped.
I couldn't be happier about having the privilege to stay at this lovely bungalow!
My wife and stayed here for 10 days while on our honeymoon and will never forget the amazing time we had. Just to echo the previous reviews, the information given is all 100% accurate. The location is very private and incredibly relaxing. After months of wedding planning the Bungalow gave us a great place for some secluded time to ourselves but also allowed us to enjoy some sight seeing, great beaches, and shopping. Some days were spent driving the island while others were simply enjoying the privacy, something that is tough to find in a resort environment. This place was great. The locals were so welcoming and such great people that leaving was a little difficult. Thankfully we returned with memories of our honeymoon that we will never forget. We look forward to returning in the future!
The Big Island's North Kohala district is the discriminating travelers' best-kept secret. Experience 'Old Hawaii' in the charming historic towns of Hawi and Kapaau, with artists' shops, galleries, and delightful cafes. Historic sites - the famous statue of King Kamehameha, state parks, tropical gardens, Pololu Valley - with its majestic views, black sand beach, and scenic hiking trails. Or kick back, and enjoy some of the island's best beaches. Whale watching is seasonal (December through April), but the sea turtle sightings occur year-round.
