About Owner/Property Manager
In 2008 Hurricane Ike destroyed our 1960s fishing camp. We built Nautical on our existing property with over 1000 sq. ft. of covered porch including a large screened porch because the views are expansive and beautiful. Nautical's unique offers incredible views of bay, wetlands, sunrise & gorgeous sunsets. Relax on the porch and enjoy the birds' daily migrations: Brown Pelicans, pink Roseate Spoonbills, Grey Blue Herons, Great White, Snowy and Cattle Egrets, various Terns & the classic Laughing Sea Gulls. In the winter season elegant White Pelicans float for hours in the pier fishing lights. If you have watercraft, you can launch from a public access boat ramp within walking distance. A Nautical lazy day: Grab coffee & watch sunrise from porch, eat breakfast, drive the kids 5 minutes to West Beach, collect seashells & build sand castles! Rinse sand off kids in 2 Cabana Showers before throwing burgers on the grill. After quiet time on wraparound Bay Porch, let children enjoy an afternoon of pier fishing, crabbing, or bird watching/cycling along our quiet, mile long dead-end street. Toss bread to seagulls from Nautical's private pier in late afternoon. After dinner, night fish on the pier or relax in the screened porch and enjoy the breezes and expansive skyline framing West Bay.

Why Owner/Property Manager chose Sportsman Road
Our lot is situated in an idyllic waterfront & natural location yet civilization is at our doorstep. (Amusements, restaurants & stores are just 10 minutes away!) We spent our childhood summers - fishing, crabbing, boating, sailing on West Bay and building sand castles, seashell hunting and riding the waves at West Beach which is just minutes away. Nautical's unique location allows all to observe the coastal birds daily and witness migrating birds (from as far away as South America). The breezes, views, sounds of wave action, bird calls and Nautical's relaxed, coastal interior allow us to escape 'city life'. The 'kid in us' appreciates that Galveston's tourist attractions and restaurants are so nearby. We also enjoy watching the sunrises, sunsets, moonrises and stars from Nautical's porches!
What makes this House unique
UNIQUE NATURAL SETTING ON SECLUDED STREET: Bay front property with private pier and fishing lights, nearby public boat launch on our secluded street, and wetlands on the opposite side of the street. Even though its location feels secluded - Galveston's historic seawall is only 6 minutes away! SPORTSMAN'S PARADISE: Enjoy fishing, crabbing, boating or watching boats cruise the bay. If you kayak, bring it because the inlets along West Bay provide great fishing and calm wave/tidal currents for paddling your water toy!! Nautical's private pier is equipped with many cleats. Do not dock boats overnight due to active tide. INSPIRING SUNSETS & SUNRISES: Bring your camera because God's sunsets and sunrises can be spectacular! In the evening, the lights on the distant mainland, Causeway Bridge and Galveston Island nicely frame West Bay and create a beautiful skyline. From the East Porch and house, the rising moon is memorably huge and quick; Star gaze the constellations from the porches or pier because the stars don't have to compete against bright city lights. BEST BIRD WATCHING: Enjoy the daily bird migration between the federally protected bird sanctuary islands to the North and federally protected wetlands directly South of Nautical; daily you'll see Brown Pelicans, pink Roseate Spoonbills, Grey Blue Herons, Great White, Snowy and Cattle Egrets, various Terns, other Herons & the classic Laughing Sea Gulls. From Fall through Spring, birds migrate from as far away as South America. As our mantra says, 'It doesn't get any better than this!' ....

Fabulous Bay Home
Our stay at Nautical couldn't have been any better. The well appointed house is beautiful with a wonderful location directly on west bay. We especially enjoyed the roomy deck that wraps around the house, which provided great sunsets each night!!
Joan was very helpful answering our questions regarding restaurants and wade fishing locations. And speaking of fishing - bring your pole. The fishing off the private pier is excellent, especially at night under the lights.
We're looking forward to our next trip...
Exactly what we were looking for!
Amazing property! The location and amenities of the property were awesome. We caught a lot of fish off the dock and really enjoyed the beautiful sunsets that you just don’t get on the beach side of the island. The property is close enough to the beach, restaurants, shopping and Galveston’s main drag to be convenient but still secluded and extremely relaxing.
Forget a beach house, we will definitely be staying at this property again the next time we are in Galveston.
Took the family to a quick getaway to do some fishing. My family loved the home and the private pier especially since we caught plenty of fish.
Will definitely keep this home in mind for future trips.
For a Houstonian, who come to the island her whole life, this was a different experience for me. I’ve always preferred beach front properties but I believe the tides are turning. This was amazing. To have a full unobstructed bay view was so much better. We loved all the birds surrounding the areas and marshes, my daughter feed seagulls every evening and the adults looked forward to the sunsets each night while sipping drinks on the huge porch. There was tons of seating, inside and out. Our daughter caught her first 3 fish off the pier. The house was fully equipped and we loved the decor. Everyone loved the house, preferred the bay and asked when we were renting it again. Thank you Joan!
Great Family Weekend
Galveston tourist attractions include
Moody Gardens (Aquarium, Rainforest, Beach Pool & Waterpark, IMAX theatre, Museum & Golf Course, Colonel's Paddleboat) and Galveston's newest water front attraction, The Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier on the seawall; the Pleasure Pier features family-oriented attractions like a giant roller coaster, ferris wheel, other rides, midway games, food venues and retail shops.
Drive to Galveston Broadway Blvd, where you'll see examples of the old Victorian era architecture and historical home tours (we recommend the famous Moody Mansion and Bishop's Palace which survived the Hurricane of 1900).
Visit the Strand National Historic District's shops, galleries and restaurants, book a performance at The Grand 1894 Opera House, check out the Victorian era architecture or stroll the nearby cruise ship alley. While harborside, walk over to the Texas Seaport Museum, where you can explore the decks of the celebrated 1877 tall ship 'Elissa', a floating National Historic Landmark. The Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig Museum is located nearby in a retired jack-up drilling rig which allows you to experience the offshore industry first-hand. Before heading back to Nautical, pick up the day's catch from one of Pier 19's licensed vendors who sell seafood fresh off the boat - blue crab, shrimp of all sizes, speckled trout, red snapper, flounder and more. Nautical's kitchen comes equipped with everything you need to prepare and serve your seafood feast!
For outdoor adventures, we recommend a kayak, duck boat or airboat tour. Majic Carpet Putt Putt, located on the Seawall, features two 18 hole 'old school' miniature golf courses, Bungee swing and shaved ice stand! Just a quarter mile west of Majic Carpet is another new attraction 'Go Karts' that features a low-key arcade and go-kart park complex. Jet ski, motor boat and sailboat rentals shops are available in Offat's Bay at 61st Street.
If the natural and coastal aspects of Galveston are more your pace, visit the Galveston Sea Turtle Facility which is free, affiliated with NOAA Fisheries and works to increase and protect the Kemp's Ridley turtle population and offers weekly tours. Bring your own gear if you don't want to hit the tourist destinations; walk along our mile-long street bordered by the bay and wetlands. These unique wetlands have inlets, shallow inter-tidal marshes, tidal creeks and mud flats that attract various coastal and migrating birds. Birders and non-Birders will be amazed at the variety and beauty of birds and wetlands terrain.
For a faster pace, go roller blading/cycling on the 10 mile-long Seawall. If you don't want to haul your bike, Seawall shops rent cruiser bicycles and cycle carts that seat 4 for $15-25/hour. Ride the free Bolivar Ferry to watch the bottlenose dolphins and the massive maritime & cruise ships navigate this waterway where the Gulf of Mexico meets the inter coastal canal.
Avid sportsmen can fish from our private pier, kayak fish West bay, or fish from jetties & commercial fishing piers along Galveston's Seawall, surf fish along West beach, or book one of many deep sea fishing boats in the area. Our street has a boat ramp within walking distance. From our pier, we catch Speckled Trout, Sand Trout, Flounder, Black Drum, Croaker, Black Tip Shark, Gafftop and sometimes Red Fish. Tip: Bring your casting net to catch mullet & piggy perch in wetlands' inlet!
Children will also enjoy crabbing in the wetlands' inlet on our street from the little dock! Please throw back the female Blue Crabs so our local crab population stays strong!
If you have any questions or want more options, Nautical has a selection of tourist pamphlets.
