The Big Wave Penthouse is arguably in the best location on the Big Island. Consider this:
• Facing west, you're guaranteed a front-row seat every evening to a spectacular and colorful sunset. You'll think you're on a (very stable) cruise ship.
• You're literally feet from the ocean. Construction setback rules now preclude this for new developments.
• There are only 12 condo units per building and there are acres of greenbelt between and around them.
• You're well removed from Alii Drive, the busy main access road to all Kailua-Kona ocean-front properties.
• You'll be away from other developments. The Keauhou Surf and Racket Club is bordered on the north by Kahalu'u Beach and on the south and east by a golf course. Because of this low density, traffic within and around the complex is very light. And it's quiet.
• You'll be on the top floor, in a corner unit. Only the top floor units have soaring, 20-foot vaulted ceilings, very large lanais and sweeping ocean views.
• You're within walking distance of the Keauhou Shopping Center where you can find a grocery store, several fine restaurants and shops of many kinds.
• Although the Big Wave is not air-conditioned, none is needed. The cooling trade winds keep the interior delightfully cool during all but the hottest days. For the rare times when the trade winds are still, efficient, high-capacity ceiling fans will keep you comfortable.

We've been frequent travelers to the Big Island, our favorite destination, and we've stayed in many houses and condos, but when we saw the Big Wave Penthouse we knew we would never see a better, more lovely place and knew we had to buy it. We hope you'll share this beautiful home with us and enjoy a bit of true Hawaii aloha spirit.
John and Linda McCluskey purchased this condo in 2012
The oceanfront view is incredible and we were impressed by the condo's location, in a gorgeous, impeccably landscaped, 17 acre sanctuary. Hawaiian royalty used to live on the grounds; they knew where the best location on the Big Island was.
It's close to everything but the property is tranquil, quiet and peaceful.
This a very large home. Including the lanai, there's nearly 1500 sq. ft. of living space. The wide-open floor plan and soaring, 20' ceilings makes it seem even larger.
Original Hawaiian art is displayed and the 50's period furniture from well-know designers such as Paul Frankl, Paul McCobb and Heywood Wakefield is both beautiful and comfortable.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful condo with us. It was everything we wanted and more. Beautiful sunsets and such a joy to hear the ocean waves, birds singing and seeing the whales!!! Mahalo!
This is our second stay at the Big Wave. My wife and I are in our mid-60s (gulp) and the Big Wave has been a perfect "home base" for exploring the Big Island.
First and foremost are the owners, John and Linda McClusky, who go out of their way to make the Big Wave as enjoyable as it can be. They are responsive and quick, and easy to reach if there's a problem.
I guarantee, when you come in the front door the first time, you will head directly to the lanai and stand in awe at the waves crashing almost at your feet. No mistake . . . Jo Anne and I were here last year and did a lot of "things," but on this visit, we mostly sat on the lanai with glasses of wine, mesmerized by the sea.
If you're looking for a lot of "bling" and a sparkling, shining brand-new place, this might not be a good fit, but otherwise the property is solid, comfortable and well-designed. Like the other reviewers have mentioned, the property has been updated all around, and has ALL the amenities one could want, including a new washer-drier and this computer on which I'm writing the review.
If this is your first time to the Big Island, there's a copy of "Hawaii -- the Big Island Revealed" by Andrew Doughty. This author is spot-on, and we have used his recommendations for planning our activities. Try the Haleo Lu'au at the Sheraton, and the submarine reef dive up in Kona. Drive up to Wiamea. Snorkle. Go to Greenwell's Coffee Plantation for a tour, visit Volcano National Park . . . the activities just go on and on!
The Keahou Shopping is just a 15' walk away . . . think grocery store. Also the L&L Hawaiian BBQ, but unlike others, my wife and I didn't like it all that much. A wide variety of Asian fast-food made from low-quality ingredients. You'll have to decide for yourself. Same for Sam Choy's. Sloppy, inept service (had a drink spilled in my lap, then a plate was broken at the table next. On the other hand, Jackie Rey's is a must. Bubba Gump's pretty nice also . . . very friendly.
If at all possible, plan to spend two weeks, or one week minimum . . . trust me, if you only book three or four nights, you'll be kicking yourself when you leave. The Big Wave Condo is THAT nice, and it certainly gets my highest rating.
Not to worry . . . we'll be back!
It is always obvious at first sight when the owner of a vacation rental is passionate about their vacation home. The Big Wave was no exception to this....it's stocked with everything you could imagine; was in perfect repair; the furniture was comfortable; the artwork and decor was beautfully Hawaiian themed and the owner even provided a lap top with a printer.....first time I've ever seen that in a vacation home. I can't imagine anything more that could have been done to ensure guests enjoyed their experience.
The Big Wave floor plan was open and generously sized with high ceilings that gave an even more spacious feeling and it has the largest lanai area we've seen (we had about half our meals on the lanai) and couldn't get enough of the view. The grounds of the Surf and Racquet Club were immaculate and the complex is situated within a quarter mile or so from a shopping center with grocery store and maybe five minutes from the Keahou harbor which is the departure point for the Fair Winds II snorkel cruise (highly recommended)....and walking distance from Kahaluu Beach Park (great snorkeling).
Setting it apart even further was the volume of professionally presented information given in advance with logistics information as well as tips on activities and dining options that greatly enhanced our experience.
Speaking of dining, the L & L Hawaiian BBQ restaurants don't look like much but the one at the shopping mall near the complex is amazing....the short ribs in particular are spectactular....much recommended....we did take out and brought it back to the lanai.....twice in four days.
In summary the only thing I regret about our stay at the Big Wave is we only scheduled four days on the Big Island. Hated to leave. In the seven years we've used VRBO with great satisfaction, the Big Wave was the most enjoyable lodging experienced we've had. We'll be back.
We booked the Big Wave Penthouse after reviewing many options for our trip to the Big Island. We were so excited to find this large 2 bedroom condo overlooking the coast at such a reasonable price. When we arrived, it was more than we expected. The 3rd floor lanai was amazing to watch sunsets, eat ALL of our meals, and just relax after a long day of activities. The upgraded kitchen was fully equipped with everything we needed to cook breakfast, lunch and dinner. The condo had beach chairs, boogie boards, tennis racquets, and snorkel equipment that we used on a daily bases. Even when there was minor maintenance issues, the response time was quick and the issues were taken care of immediately. We enjoyed that we were far enough away from the Kailua-Kona downtown and that it was a nice and quiet community, but only a 10 minute drive (5 miles) away for shopping and meals downtown. We even made it part of our daily running activity to run along the coast on Ali'i Rd and enjoyed the coastal scenery. The Keauhou Kona SRC is a great community and we enjoyed using the pool and tennis courts. We had a great vacation and would highly recommend the Big Wave Penthouse.
The condo had absolutely everything we needed for our 7 day stay. We cooked all our meals in the condo and were amazed at the beautiful dishes, pots & pans, wine cooler, dishwasher, etc. The furnishings were all first-class and we especially loved how quiet and private the condo was. The only noise we ever heard was the birds singing outside our window every morning and the waves splashing into the rocks below and they were "music to our ears." The host provided EXCELLENT recommendations concerning restaurants, beaches, shopping, etc., which were extremely helpful.
The one drawback is that there is no elevator and we were on the 4th floor; this wasn't a problem for us as we are healthy/active 70 years olds but would certainly be an issue for older/inactive adults. We all agreed that we would definitely stay here again and would recommend it to any of our friends traveling to Kona.
Our stay was amazing! The condo is clean and stunning, exactly like the pictures show. We had everything we needed, and the location was great, close to everything. Loved it, would book again!
From the moment we made contact with John, we felt comfortable with him. He was easy and fun to talk to, and we knew right away we had made the right choice in the Big Wave for our 10 day vacation. John stayed in touch with us prior to our arrival and throughout our stay answering our last minute questions and sending us emails (with links) of his personal restaurant recommendations, tips on where to shop, snorkel, etc., and even checking to see if there was anything more they could do to make our stay more pleasant. But he and Linda had already thought of everything and more! Upon our arrival, we found a personal note congratulating us on our anniversary and a chilled bottle of wine and glasses in the refrigerator.
And the Big Wave Penthouse? It is spectacular! As we opened the door, we were struck with an awesome sense of space and beauty. The vaulted ceilings and wrap-around lanai framed by the ocean is breathtaking! The entire penthouse is updated and exquisitely decorated from the furnishings and lighting to the eclectic artwork. John and Linda's attention to detail really makes it feel like home...cute KONA hat rack, fun dishes, wine cooler, lamps and candles on the lanai, etc. We started every morning on the lanai with coffee and fresh fruit on the blue glass fish plates and ended every evening on the lanai with candlelight and wine.
As for practical aspects, everything was perfect: comfortable bed, nice size shower with great shower head, plenty of closet space, and fully appointed kitchen with everything one could possibly need, including some basics in the pantry. A Weber grill is just steps away from the edge of the parking lot. Wifi is excellent! Although John's laptop and printer are available for guests' use, we were able to print our boarding passes from our iPad. There are fans in every room and by following John's "steps for keeping cool" we were quite comfortable. Nights are very cool with all the doors and windows open. We fell asleep to the sounds and breezes from the ocean and slept like babies!
We have traveled quite a bit (this was our 3rd trip to Hawaii in 6 years), and we rank this as our best trip ever. The Big Wave is a paradise, and John and Linda are consummate hosts. Their aloha spirit made us feel like the Big Wave was our home for ten magical days. We look forward to our return. Mahalo, John and Linda, for everything!
The Big Wave Penthouse celebrates early Hawaiian style throughout. We've taken care to integrate all the elements of the warm and colorful Hawaiian ethos in every aspect of the layout and design.
Life in Hawaii revolves around the water and the beautiful Pacific Ocean is front and center and visible from nearly all the areas of the penthouse. Soaring 20-foot foot ceilings, massive sliding glass doors and floor-to ceiling windows blur the distinction between inside and outside..
