Igo Barn Rental Photos and Description

Private mountain meadow hideaway, hardwood interiors, open floor plan

This is the stuff dreams are made of. Spend a weekend in the California countryside. Your home base will be the oldest barn in Shasta County. Beautifully renovated into a comfortable guest house furnished with antiques and heirlooms, the Barn House at Stonewall Ranch is a true country retreat.

Up to four people and their well-behaved pets may visit from two nights to a week. (If you'd like to stay longer, please contact us.)

Just 17 miles from Redding, California, this is the ideal place to truly "get away from it all." Set in a peaceful mountain meadow by a year-round boulder-lined stream on a paved mountain road that winds through woodland virtually untouched by the developer's hand, the Barn House is a place like no other.

Visit our website at to learn more about the area.

Beautifully furnished with heirlooms, antiques and works by local artists and craftspeople, the Barn House features Tennessee red-oak hardwood floors and knotty pine paneling throughout on walls and cathedral ceilings.

Features: An open floor-plan; natural-stone fireplace built with stones from the ranch; well-equipped kitchen with full-size appliances; family-size dining table and dining alcove; massive decks that run the length of the building overlook a meadow and the boulder-lined creek that runs along the length of the property.

The Barn House is a romantic hideaway for couples. Let the sounds of the gentle brook just outside the door lull you to sleep. The bedroom features an antique four-poster double bed, an heirloom chest, 19th century armoire and dresser, and a contemporary wing-back recliner

The great room with its cathedral ceilings and knotty pine interior is as comfortable as it is beautiful. Antique chairs, deep old-fashioned rockers, and a warm natural-stone fireplace with pellet insert create an inviting home. Relax with a good book by the fire, listen to music and enjoy a glass of wine. The futon couch converts to a full-size bed.

From the massive decks, kick back and enjoy being surrounded by nature. Stonewall Ranch is home to a variety of wildlife--the California black bear, wild turkey, the rare ringtail cat, the endangered martin/fisher, and herds of deer freely roam the mountain. Our guests are more likely to see deer pass by on their way to the creek, than cars on the quiet country lane that leads to the property.

A paradise for hikers and mountain bicyclists, the property abuts the backside of Whiskeytown NRA, a veritable wilderness. Backpacking, mountain biking, hiking, nature walks and quiet meditation by the year-round stream are all part of the quiet life here at Stonewall Ranch.

Ample parking is available for large vehicles, including RVs (no hookups).

Well-behaved dogs are welcome at the Barn House at $10 per dog per night. To ensure that pets continue to be welcomed, please make sure that they do not get onto the furniture, and do not leave them alone while you are away from the Barn House. We have a pet-friendly cupboard filled with all the little extras that our pet-owning friends might need--everything from old afghans and blankets to make a cozy bed for Fido, to towels to use after a visit to the nearby creek.

The Barn House at Stonewall Ranch is just 20 minutes from Redding, but it feels like a world away. In some ways it is. There are no gas stations, supermarkets or convenience stores once you leave Redding. There is a small general store in Igo that is open from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. for essentials, as well as milk, bread, beer and cigarettes. There are no hard-liquor sales in Igo. The Igo Store also serves breakfast on Sunday morning, and during the week hamburgers and deli sandwiches are available.

The Barn House at Stonewall Ranch is a quiet, restful vacation home for people who truly want to get away from it all and enjoy time in the woods. The Barn House has cable TV, Excede broadband satellite internet connectivity, and internet-based telephone service.

Open flames are not allowed anywhere on the property. Flameless candles and lanterns are available for your use.

Smoking is not permitted inside the Barn House. Smoking is allowed on the exterior decks away from open windows and doors. E-cigarettes and vapes may be used inside the Barn House, so long as they do not emit a strong odor.

The Barn House is air conditioned and has an overhead fan in the great room for warm weather, and a propane heating stove, as well as a pellet insert for the fireplace for chilly temperatures.

About Denise Wallace / Lisa Donnelly

It took Denise a lot of years to find the property that ultimately became Stonewall Ranch, and more years to renovate the oldest barn in Shasta County into the home she occupied for several years.

But as circumstances changed, she moved to another house on the property, making the Barn House available as a rental property. Today, she and her wife Lisa Donnelly live just up the road on another part of the ranch with an assortment of rescued dogs, cats and parrots.

Denise is a life-long resident of Shasta County and an avid golfer. Lisa is a writer and entrepreneur who is developing a line of botanically infused personal care products.

The Barn House is LGBT-owned, with special discounts available to our Rainbow Family.

Denise Wallace / Lisa Donnelly purchased this barn in 1987

Why Denise Wallace / Lisa Donnelly chose California

As developers increasingly began to run roughshod over Shasta County, Denise started searching for a place that remained relatively untouched. She discovered Zogg Mine Road and Stonewall Ranch. The peaceful woodland with its ancient trees, boulder-lined creek, and pastoral landscape is a slice of serenity. The nearby hamlet of Igo is a bit of Americana that is rapidly disappearing, with its cozy general store and the Post Office where everyone goes to pick up their mail, since there is no home mail delivery. At Stonewall Ranch, we and our neighbors live a quiet life far removed from the hustle and din of city life. We invite you to join us.

What makes this barn unique

Step onto the back deck and breathe deeply. Look up into the night and see stars spilling across the sky like a broken bag of rhinestones. Listen to the quiet. Watch a doe and her fawn move slowly across the meadow to the creek. Such is the stuff of magic.

Inside, feel the warmth of wood surround you, a cozy fire in the natural-stone fireplace, shadows chasing across cathedral ceilings, stained glass glowing warm and inviting.

We loved our stay at the barn. It was our anniversary trip and they got us a cake. Super nice. The few times we needed to call it was responded and followed up on instantly almost. Loved the fireplace the deck the propane grill. Only complaint is to be honest the bed was really uncomfortable. A bit small for the room and also springs right near top. Still giving 5 stars though because everything else was amazing

Owner's Response: We're delighted you enjoyed your visit. We're sorry you found the bed uncomfortable; it's not something we've heard before. Thanks to your feedback, we're trying to find a foam topper that will fit. The challenge with that particular bed is that the frame is more than 150 years old! It's a family heirloom that my mother slept in when she was a girl and which I slept in throughout my childhood. Antiques though beautiful do have their challenges--among them is finding 21st century mattresses and box springs that fit a 19th century frame. We'll see what we can do to improve it for the future. Thanks for letting us know. :)

Slice of paradise

  • 5 of 5

The barn house is an amazing experience full of historical charm and antiques. The scenery was a secluded mountain hideaway tucked in the woods with a stream running through it. There are ancient fig trees and other fruit and nut trees. The wild life was all around us from deer to bears to squirrels and wild turkeys. This is a must do for anyone who loves being out doors and looking for a quiet getaway. The sound of the tranquil stream and the frogs croaking and crickets chirping at night was just what we needed. We really enjoyed BBQing on the outdoor deck. We loved getting acquainted with our hostess and owner of this property Denise. She went out of her way to make us feel comfortable. The once barn, now cozy home had everything we could ever want in a vacation property.

Quiet Country Get-a-Way

  • 5 of 5

It's a perfect place for a private get-a-way or for someone just wanting peace and quiet. I slept on the deck for three nights and the cave-like darkness and the sky full of stars took me back to my childhood camping trips before tents were necessity. I wasn't there much during the daytime, but in late summer it was too hot to sit outside until the sun went down and it began to cool off. I think it would be ideal in spring and fall when the temperatures are more moderate. The AC keep the inside cool, but it's such an outdoor kind of place, I wasn't keen to stay inside.

Because of the small size of the kitchen and bathroom, I think it's the perfect size for two people, or one as in my case. Both the inside and deck space is set up for comfort. However, if you don't like yellow jackets, as I don't, eating outside is a problem. I even brought up a yellow jacket trap, which caught quite a few, but others still arrived within minutes of my putting my plate down on the outside table. Of course the barn is out in the country, so that is to be expected. Overall, if you want peace and quiet in a true country environment, this is the place. I truly enjoyed myself.

Owner's Response: We're delighted you enjoyed your visit. One of the drawbacks of country life are the seasonal bugs, like the meat bees you mentioned (they do look rather wasp-like and are bad-tempered like wasps) which are around for a few weeks every September. We know how pesky they can be--not to mention determined, despite everyone's best efforts to discourage them. Fortunately they are here only a few weeks in the fall. Glad you enjoyed sleeping under the stars. The sky does seem a bit closer here.

The cabin and amenities were better then I expected. Access to creek swimming holes was simple. If you are looking for a place to just get away to unwind, read a book or spend time with loved ones this is the place. Absolutely loved the Barn House.

Quiet, magical place

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we arrived and were met by Denise, we knew we were in for a treat. Her generous spirit and amazing character made us feel well cared for and immediately at home. We were treated to a tour of the property on "the mule," and were given great tips for a most spectacular hike to a waterfall. Staying in the barn-house and exploring the surrounding property was deeply refueling.

We are very thankful that Denise & Lisa so generously share this special place.

We are looking forward to our next visit.

The Barn House is truly a remote, private get-away for people looking for a rural retreat. It is situated along a paved, county-maintained road. The closest neighbors are across the creek, however, their house is not visible. The ranch property extends approximately 1/2 mile up the creek to our private picnic area (We'll be happy to show you around the ranch when you arrive or at your convenience.) If no one is checking in the same day as your check-out, you're welcome to stay as long as you like on your final day. (If new guests are arriving the same day, we'll be happy to store your gear while you continue to enjoy the property away from the Barn House while housekeeping prepares it for the new arrivals.)
