Magpie Cottage is a life-long dream come true for us. We love Beaufort as our second home and hope you will come to enjoy it as much as we and our family do.
Doug Mendel purchased this bungalow in 2003
We've vacationed for years on the coasts of the Southeast. When we finally made it to Beaufort we found everything we were looking for in all those travels - unspoiled natural beauty and a vibrant community that shares a unique culture, food and way of life.
When we stepped into this cottage, its sunlight and cheerfulness captivated us immediately. The Great Room has eight full-length windows. Magpies love shiny things - and this bright house seemed to embody that spirit of light and curiosity. Along with that, it provides the perfect blend of old-time character and new convenience.
We just have to thank Doug and Jan...our stay was perfect. Location is amazing...directly across from the National Cemetery with beautiful views yet few neighbors so the place is very private. Plenty of parking, we drove our 32 ft. camper down and were able to park right in the front which made pulling in and our a breeze. All you need to bring with you is yourselves and food. They have everything you could need... there is not a kitchen appliance missing. This is so helpful since many new Marines just want to have home cooked food. The bedrooms were roomy, the beds were comfortable. The outside area is large and accommodated plenty of guest as we had a family BBQ, the multi level deck and yard were more than we could of asked for. With the heat of South Carolina in August we needed that AC and it did not disappoint! Some of our other family members had a rental over in Lady's Island and commented that the air was way better than theirs. It is conveniently located to groceries stores, the ride to Hunting Island Beach was easy, and only about 15-20 mins to the gate at Parris Island.
The property owners were very helpful, as we had decided we really wanted to stay an additional day and hit the beach, I reached out to them and they were more than willing to work with us. I would highly recommend this home for your stay in Beaufort area.
Our time at Magpie was perfect, as expected! We had rented the home once before and had such a flawless experience the first time around that we decided to book it again for our 4th of July family vacation. The space manages to fit up to 7 people (if you count the comfy sofa as a sleeping area). The decorating made us feel like we were in a home away from home. The kitchen is well stocked, washer and dryer are included along with beach chairs & umbrellas too. Even though the house is stunning, I did notice that the place was showing a little wear-and-tear since we'd last seen it. Apart from that, the home was gorgeous and we can't wait for our next trip down.
Plums seems to be our 'go to' for a nice meal outside, although the July heat kept us from sitting on the patio where you'll find a beautiful view of the water, swing span draw bridge and park area. There is always something to do between people watching, kayaking, searching for dolphins or enjoying a simple local ice cream treat. A must see is the beach at the local state park. It looks like something out of Jurassic Park. It's amazing.
We are so grateful for our time at Magpie and would recommend it to others.
Magpie was a awesome cottage. Had plenty of space, great location to many places. Hope to go back again when we have more time to take in sight seeing. Thanks!!!
A great location. We road the provided bikes to Pigeon point every night to watch the sunsets. Walked to downtown for the Water Festival. A great home to hang out with family ... Cozy and welcoming.
We enjoyed our three-day stay in Magpie Cottage. It was more spacious than we expected, with three nice bedrooms, good beds, two baths, nicely equipped kitchen, large living room/dining space. Spic & span. Quiet neighborhood with an historic brick-walled cemetery across the street, little traffic. Could hear frogs, etc. while outside but not a peep (!) once we were inside.
Magpie Cottage was just what we were looking for for a brief beach getaway! The house was in a great location walking distance to Beaufort Historical District and a great sunset peer. The house had everything that we needed, was very clean and stocked with movies and games for the kids. We will definitely be back for another visit in the future.
