Magpie Cottage is a life-long dream come true for us. We love Beaufort as our second home and hope you will come to enjoy it as much as we and our family do.
Doug Mendel purchased this bungalow in 2003
We've vacationed for years on the coasts of the Southeast. When we finally made it to Beaufort we found everything we were looking for in all those travels - unspoiled natural beauty and a vibrant community that shares a unique culture, food and way of life.
When we stepped into this cottage, its sunlight and cheerfulness captivated us immediately. The Great Room has eight full-length windows. Magpies love shiny things - and this bright house seemed to embody that spirit of light and curiosity. Along with that, it provides the perfect blend of old-time character and new convenience.
We enjoyed the Magpie Cottage. It is very comfortable and well stocked. The kitchen is a dream to work in - especially for a Thanksgiving dinner with all its embellishments! We had some trouble finding it from Boundary: 1- because we didn't have our digital map turned on and 2 - because the road is not marked with a name, just numbers, but that was a small setback which was resolved quickly. We spent the days exploring Beaufort, its food, shopping and history and nights in the cottage having fun with the games and movies the owners were thoughtful enough to provide.
The home was a perfect place to stay for our son's graduation from Parris Island. It was a very hectic trip with lots of schedules, coordination, early mornings, later nights, very emotional but also very wonderful, happy and exciting. But the one thing we could guarantee after a long day we came "home". If we were to have cooked, Doug and Jan provided everything you would need, even spices and plastic wrap along with tin foil. The house was extremely clean and they provided a bars of soap, dishwasher detergent, toilet paper, towels, hand soap and even make up remover pads....we have rented many homes and that is never the case. They do it right. The house was the perfect set up for our crew that we had. Would highly recommend the Magpie to other future marine families venturing down for graduation.
Magpie is a wonderful home. This was our second visit and the experience was just as nice the first trip. Everything we needed was provided - except food, of course. From the moment we arrived, stress levels dropped to nil and the magic of the Lowcountry took over. The home is very spacious for the stated square footage. Everything is kept neat as a pin. The location is perfect for getting around and yet you feel as though you're a million miles away from it all. The decor is vintage and whimsical. Whether you choose the front porch or the back decks, cares just disappear. The home lends itself easily to either spending all of your time hanging out or just as a place to sleep after a big day out and about. But as we soon discovered, the real bonus is that if something should go wrong (we picked the week Hurricane Matthew arrived this time) Doug and Jan are just a phone call away and are the nicest folks in the world to work with. They proved themselves to be very conscientious and attentive to their guests' needs. Their response time is quick as lightening and they go above and beyond expectations to ensure your trip is everything you want it to be. They are prepared to handle any - and every - thing that may come up. Plus, they're just really nice people all around.
We just love Magpie and have decided that it will be our rental of choice from now on. We love Beaufort (and have decided to build our own home there) and know we'll have a few more opportunities to come back for visits before we move. Magpie is just the best! We just can't say enough good things about the home or about the owners. I just don't know how you could go wrong with this spectacular choice.
Our vacation was cancelled due to Hurricane Matthew, but the owners of Magpie Cottage were great. They contacted us as soon as the reports indicated Beaufort might be in the hurricane's path and kept us in the loop the whole time. Although we never got to South Carolina, I would still recommend Magpie Cottage based on our interactions with Jan and Doug.
Five college friends from way back that have been getting together for 27 years for "girls' weekends had a great time in Beaufort. We loved Magpie Cottage, great location and everyday we found something else we liked about the cottage. We had everything we needed and enjoyed our time together.
We plan to come back again and highly recommend staying at Magpie Cottage.
I loved the stay at Magpie - my daughters and I had a girls weekend and had a blast! The cottage was clean and pretty and comfortable located in a quiet neighborhood and within walking distance of several eating establishments. The owners were gracious and responsive.
In the heart of the Lowcountry, Beaufort is located on Port Royal Island, one of the inner Sea Islands of South Carolina.
