Welcome to Dockside. This comfortable and spacious house in Southwest Harbor, Maine, is located in a pleasant and shady residential neighborhood, and overlooks one of the most gorgeous harbors in the area. In this setting on the harbor, you can enjoy your own little section of rocky beach right on the working waterfront. There are a variety of restaurants in town, a pleasant ten- minute walk away, or Beal's Lobster Pier at the other end of Clark Point Road, also within walking distance. Or pick out your own lobster at Southwest Lobster, right next door, and enjoy a private dinner at home.
Southwest Harbor is a friendly year-round town that offers conveniences such as a library, banks, post office, grocery stores and medical clinics, as well as art galleries and gift shops, bike rentals, restaurants and coffee shops, in a quieter setting that avoids the crowds and noise of Bar Harbor, which is a 20-minute drive away. Within a few miles drive in either direction from the house, there are beautiful hiking trails in Acadia National Park, some along the ocean, or a pond, others up mountains offering great views. You can walk right from the house through quiet neighborhood streets to a causeway over a millpond, with views out to the ocean.
On the main level of the house, facing the harbor, there is a living room with a fireplace, and a well-equipped kitchen with dining table. At the back of the house is a large sitting room with comfortable couches, cable television and a fireplace. On the same level are a queen bedroom, and a bathroom with shower stall.
A large deck facing the harbor spans the width of the house, and offers comfortable outdoor seating and a small table that seats 4.
Upstairs there is a spacious master bedroom with king bed and large windows overlooking the harbor, a second bedroom with two twin beds, and a bathroom with a bathtub/shower unit. A washer and coin-op dryer are located in the daylight basement.
In 2015 we replaced the dishwasher, refrigerator, range, barbecue grill, clothes washer and dryer.
The parking area in front of the house is shared with the tenants of the building in the rear of the property.
The property overlooks the harbor facing south and enjoys beautiful breezes off the water.
Allows Pets: Yes
Easily a 5-star rating! We had a group of 6, and all of us loved this place. From the great location and great views of the harbor to helpful details and information provided by the owners, everything was just great. Downstairs offers a nice kitchen, bathroom, one bedroom, an open room with great views of Southwest Harbor, and a cozier, quieter TV room with lots of good books. Upstairs offers two bedrooms (one with a harbor view; one quiet and cozy) and a charming bath. The basement rounds things out with a washer and dryer and exit to the kayaks provided. There's also a deck for enjoying the outdoors. The owners have thought about everything you might need, and they were friendly and easy to work with. The main "downtown" of Southwest Harbor is about 3/4 mile away, a delightful walk--don't miss pizza and apple pie at The Quiteside Cafe; Sips and Pita (restaurants) are also recommended. A short drive away, be sure to hit Thurston's Lobster Pound. Nearby, in Bass Harbor, Island Cruises provides an excellent 2-hour boat tour that is a great introduction to the island and the lobster culture. And of course there's always Acadia National Park!
If you're planning a trip to Acadia or MDI, be sure to consider the "quiet" (western) side of the island and especially consider Dockside on the Harbor. I can guarantee we will be back!
We stayed at this cottage in August of 2013 and it was managed by a different owner, but we absolutely loved it there. If you want a great Maine experience this property is located right above the dock. We loved to sit out on the deck and watch the lobsterman (women!) go and go with their catch and we purchased lobster right out of the water. You can't get much fresher than that. You need to expect a little noise when the day breaks and there is activity on the dock, but we loved watching the entire process. The area is incredibly gorgeous. The home was comfortable and roomy. I would recommend.
Our family (2 adults, 3 kids) spent the week at Dockside in June just before the busy tourist season and had a fabulous time. Communication before our arrival and during our vacation was great. John responded promptly by email to our questions and was very accommodating when we requested to bump our dates by a few days. He stopped by once to drop off extra supplies, some fresh garden spinach, and kindly gave us some great local tips on places to check out. While the house has an older, camp-like feel, we found the it to be spotless, spacious, and well stocked with kitchen and linen supplies. We picked up lobsters at the dock at end of the driveway, cooked them up, and ate them on the deck overlooking the harbor. It's an easy 10 minute walk into the quaint village of Southwest Harbor but we spent most of our time hiking and biking in Acadia. Everything was within an easy 20 minute drive. After checking out the entire island as well as Bar Harbor during our vacation, we all agreed we had found the perfect location from which to launch our daily adventures!
We enjoyed our stay at Dockside so much. John, the owner, was very easy to work with. On the second day of our arrival, he brought us a large share of fresh vegetables from his garden. He was very welcoming and greeted us warmly. He was very willing to share his knowledge about the area & actually suggested a little known location where we ended up having our wedding ceremony, it was perfect. The house was quintessential Maine and is located right next door to a working lobster pound. It was great watching the lobster fishermen and visiting with them, they are very open to talking about their craft. The view is spectacular! You can sit on the deck outside or view the harbor from the living room, kitchen or master bedroom. The house is large and gives it's guests plenty of room to spread out. The house is very well stocked, including all that is needed for a home cooked lobster dinner. It was a true Maine experience. We took the kayaks out and paddled into Somes Sound, that was a treat. We loved staying in Southwest Harbor, a.k.a. the "quiet side". The house is a short walk into town where there are shops & restaurants. We loved walking to town as there are residents who sale baked goods, jams & jellies, all on the honor system. That was very refreshing, Mainers are very friendly people. We made daily trips to Acadia National Park and the surrounding area, all were 20-30 minute drives. SW Harbor was the perfect home base. We went to Maine to get married, it was magical. John and his wife Leanne brought over a floral arrangement and card to celebrate our marriage, it was very touching. We fell in love with Maine and it's residents and plan on returning in a few years.
My family gathered here and it was perfect. Big table in the kitchen to gather around - or the fireplace in the living room. The kitchen has everything you might need for cooking and serving. The house feels like a family cottage rather than a rental. Cosy, comfortable and well supplied. Location is great with harbor activity to watch and an easy walk into SW village. And right next door a lobster pound with great prices - we got lobsters for 7 for $33. Margery is very nice and helpful. Would definitely rent this place again.
We've rented a lot of houses over the years in many parts of the world and this is at the top of my list. The location is perfect. Personally, I find Bar Harbor overrated. There is amazing hiking, scenery, swimming and dining on the quite side. When we did venture to the other side, it was all about 20-25 minutes away. The house was the perfect set up for a family with kids. Our girls loved their room that came stocked with toys. The owner came over one day to give us some tips on local activities that were great and not in a single book. We had a great time, thank you!
