About the property

2 Bedroom, 1 & 1/2 Baths, Beach Cottage Steps Away From Private Beach Access

Hidden treasure is an island style beach cottage situated amongst beautiful old oak trees. The house is located on a quite lane about a block long that has the ocean at one end and the sound at the other. Though we are on an interior lot, it is just steps (approximately 80 yards) to either the private beach access or to the small ramp that you have access to the sound from. The cottage itself was fully renovated in 2008-- the interior was gutted and the entire space was redone. It has an open floor plan for the living and kitchen area and all areas look out to the trees. A screened porch and a rear deck can both be accessed from the main living area. A deck lines one side of the house that leads from the screened porch to the covered front porch. Sitting on the screened porch is like being in a tree house-- branches arch gracefully all around you providing a pathway for squirrels and birds to bound from one to another. You can hear the ocean most days from this spot-- it is relaxation at its best. The cottage is about 900 square feet but feels larger because of the open floor plan and raised ceiling height in the living room. The floors are tile through out-- which is easy to clean. The two bedrooms provide sleeping for four-- one has a queen bed the other has a full size. Again it is hard to describe how wonderful it feels waking up to the sound of birds and the ocean and seeing the tree branches surrounding you. Totally relaxing!! Hidden Treasure is perfect for a family getaway, a couples retreat, or girls week away.

About Julie Johnson

My husband and i own and operate a cabinetry business in Hampstead, NC. We have been in business since 1979. We have two wonderful sons-- both are working with us now. As a family we have always loved the beach and the outdoors in general. My husband taught the boys to fish as soon as they could get in a boat and so we were always at the beach or on the sound as they were growing up. My husband loves fishing and I love the beach so when we found the cottage and bought it-- it became our project together. As a family we have put in many hours working on remodeling and fixing up what was an old and tired place. Now it is a place where we enjoy spending time with friends and family. We have celebrated many milestones at the beach-- everything from a fabulous 70's themed b-day party to a 60th birthday gathering for my husband this past summer. All are wonderful memories. There just is no truer form of relaxation than time spent at the beach. We cherish our time here and always look forward to coming back.

Julie Johnson purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Julie Johnson chose Topsail Island

We came across our home on the island by chance but immediately fell in love with the location. The old live oak trees, quaint street and closeness to both the ocean and the sound made this a one of a kind get away home. The house itself needed work so after purchasing it we remodeled the entire interior and continue to improve the exterior as we can. This cottage has the most peaceful and beautiful setting, it truly gives you that 'tree house' feel. We begin to relax the moment we step out of the car.

What makes this cottage unique

The house is situated right in the midst of a maritime forest. It is close to both the ocean and the sound. The beach is just 80 yards away down the lane. You do cross over the street to get to the beach access but it is a private access. The unique thing about the beach access is that there are no houses on the beach front right at our beach. This makes it less crowded and really quite private to our street. There is also a ramp to the sound at the other end of the street. This ramp is just right for a jet ski or a kayak. Our area is also perfect for walking or biking as there are sidewalks and bike lanes.

Great place and great location!

We had a very fun week at this place. We rented kayaks, fished and hung at the beach. Great location - close to both the sound and the ocean. Also, love the decks and beautiful old trees! Thanks for a great week.

Peaceful and relaxing getaway.

Great location, beautiful surroundings and a comfy cottage at the beach. We saw dolphins dancing in the waves, gorgeous sunsets, and enjoyed the lovely live oak trees. Hope to come back soon!

Beautiful Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Sometimes you go away and you have an idea what to expect. When we arrived we were met by the owner Julie. She was so nice and showed us the house and explained everything that needed to be explained. The house is kept up and all the appliances worked great. We got there a little early for check in but she let us come right on in. The yard is beautiful with old oaks lining the street and property. The beach is 2 minute walk away and town is just a short 5 minute drive. We went with our traveling companion Dannie , our 8 year old Lab/Coon and she just loved it that she could hang out on the decks and sunbathe. If you ever get the chance to stay here do so and enjoy the beach and bay. You will not be disappointed.'

A great hideaway for a relaxed visit.

  • 5 of 5

This place is exactly as described. It is quiet, peaceful and comfortable. We really enjoyed our stay and especially appreciated that we could bring our two pekingese along with us instead of putting them in a kennel for a week. It is located on a short street where all the homes are built on large lots. The beach house looks rustic on the outside, but is nicely modernized inside. There is a large combined kitchen-dining- living area that was perfect for our needs. The beds are comfortable and hot water was always available. The TV and wifi worked very well. Although we were there over Christmas week, it would be really nice to return during the warmer months when we could go swimming in the ocean, which is in close proximity. Our grandkids really enjoyed the wonderful oak trees which lend themselves to tree climbing and the fire pit in which we made s'mores. Topsail Island is not nearly as populated as many other beach areas, and has several very nice restaurants. If we ever need a place in the area again we will for sure contact Julie.

Return To Topsail

  • 5 of 5

We spent 10 summer vacations on Topsail with our 3 kids It has been at least 15 years but my wife and I always wanted to go back. This was my first shot with VRBO. Julie was a pleasure to deal with and exceptionally accommodating. The house is exactly as described. Everything you need. Perfectly located on the Island. A few miles to town and nothing but peace and quiet. You hear the ocean from the screened porch. We walked to spectacular sunrises and sunsets steps from the house. Fresh fish and shrimp at the dock from the days catch are minutes away . Day trips to Wilmington and Southport are a nice way to spend non beach days. Topsail has thankfully remained unspoiled by commercial development. It's a special place. Julie's house is a perfect spot to enjoy it all. We will be back. S Nevins. New York

Topsail island is a great place for families and fun in the sun. It is also a wonderful retreat for couples wanting to find some time for relaxation. Our beaches are beautiful and not crowded (at our section)-- perfect for just laying back in the sun or walking and enjoying the surf and a ocean breeze. For an evening out, the area has many fine dining opportunities from seafood to gourmet or take the family out for pizza--we have something to please anyone here. Topsail is a wonderful beach town-- visit the quaint beach shops or take a walk around the walkways at the sound park located at the bridge in surf city. I personally love the walkways on the sound and walk our dog there, the water is beautiful and you can sit and watch people fishing or the boats traveling the sound. If you are in for some adventure take a boat ride on the pirate ship, docked right in surf city. This ship passes by our section of the sound at hidden treasure and it always sounds as if the guests aboard are having a wonderful time. You can also rent bikes if you enjoy biking and ride the bike paths exploring the island at your own pace. Be sure to visit the famous sea turtle hospital or the missiles and more museum, i recommend both especially for the children. So whether you enjoy sunning and just relaxing, fishing on the surf or on one of our piers, or visiting the sea turtle hospital there is something to keep you occupied here on beautiful topsail island.
