Hi, I am Zoë, a Brit who feels completely at home here on the Big Island. This amazing place with the very best people you'll ever meet, so many terrains; jungle, desert, rainforest, jungle, rolling ranchlands, snow-capped mountains and Kilauea, our very own live volcano, making the Big Island bigger every moment as lava falls steaming into the ocean; twelve of the world's sixteen weather patterns; green, black, gray and white sand beaches; the world's highest mountain (from the seabed up!), warm ponds heated by the volcano under the palms nestled by a sun-soaked ocean, snorkeling, kayaking, caving, climbing, surfing, paddle-boarding, zip-lining, hiking, swimming, farmer's markets, national parks, and so much more... delicious local foods; beauty, beauty and more beauty; magnificent waterfalls, ancient giant mango groves, the stark black lava rock, the clear blue skies and the warm waters of turquoise ocean. Giant turtles, spinner dolphins and whales who swim wild and free with us as we play in the ocean! We enjoy them all.
We are family oriented with many friends and family, local and international, who often stay at our home. We enjoy a simple island lifestyle, gatherings of good company, good music, good food and we prefer to live alcohol-free and smoke-free. We have three dogs, Koa, Maui and Lilikoi, all of whom are well-socialzed and well-behaved. We're a low-tech family, no broadcast TV, no video games, although we do have the internet and Netflix for the movies we love to watch together.
As a family (however many of us there are at home!) we play board games, any games, sing, write, create arts and crafts, garden, cook, bake, and spend time in the great outdoors of the Big Island, cycling, hiking, swimming, kayaking and boogie-boarding, amongst other things. We cook our food from scratch, using local or home-grown ingredients as much as possible and encourage exploration of the local culinary delights!
Zoe purchased this lodge in 2012
We chose Hale Pono because we love the peaceful location and how well it was built, using local resources, like the wood floors, and careful attention to the things that matter living in a tropical climate.
Beautiful retreat-like setting, off the beaten track
Natural air conditioning as the house is built in orientation to the trade-winds.
On stilts, so there is good airflow around and under the structure and it discourages bugs.
Gorgeous hand-laid, locally-harvested and processed wood floor and trim.
Two full bathrooms
A large kitchen area
Large carport and dedicated Laundry Room

Though Hale Pono is a little off the beaten path it's completely worth the drive! We stayed here overnight while on a trip to see the Volcano and couldn't have picked a better spot. The charming and cozy home was immaculately clean and filled with all the comforts of home. Zoe, our host, was incredibly warm and greeted us with a freshly baked chocolate/cherry cake and haupia ice cream that we devoured for dessert. The property itself is gorgeous and really a perfect little slice of paradise. Our family lives on the Big Island and even to us it truly felt like a tropical escape! We really enjoyed our stay here and would recommend it to anyone!
After reading others' reviews, I see that they highlighted all the aspects that easily earned this vacation locale its five stars. All future rentals will be held against this standard. I can't imagine a more comfortable, cozy, welcoming, perfectly maintained place.
We've stayed at 5 different vacation rentals through out the islands and this is by far the beset because:
- interior is very very clean (floor is dustless, bathroom is not moldy, kitchen is not greasy,
- bedroom is super comfortable
- pantry is stocked with the essentials
- kitchen very functional (has cook ware for us to cook steamed blue striped bass, Kauai shrimp Kahuku style, and chicken long rice)
- laundry washer / dryer are brand new; stocked with detergent
- smart TV with Pandora, Netflix, Hulu...
- super comfy sofa
- and the most important reason is that this place is very very clean
We enjoyed our weeklong stay in Hale Pono immensely. It was the perfect spot from which to explore all that Volcanoes National Park, Hilo and the East side of the Big Island have to offer. Even Mauna Kea is a comfortable day trip. If we have one regret, it's that we didn't take greater advantage of Zoe's cooking. The meals and snacks we did have were delicious and the haupia pie is not to be missed. Our kids felt right at home and the little touches, like the toys, games and books were well used.
We hope to have the opportunity to visit again soon. Mahalo Zoe!
This rental is a great location to explore the whole island from. Our luxury private sunshine hideaway and still under five minutes to the two highways. We booked half our trip staying at another rental on the West side of the island and ended up we cancelled that one and stayed the whole time at this rental because we know when we've found a good thing! The other reviews say it all about how awesome this rental is, I would only add that it is outstanding value for money and we are so happy that we were in one place the whole time. The island is so small you can drive everywhere in no time flat and the drives are all amazing. Don't waste your money renting in Kona - we've been to the island before and never found a better rental or hotel, east or west side of the island.
We took a long time to find a place that sounded like it would suit all six of us in the family. Hale Pono fit the bill! What a place! We used it as our luxurious base camp for exploring Hawaii Island. Most places of interest were 15-30 mins drive and nothing on the island is more than a two-hour drive, with plenty to do and see on your way. The weather at the house was spectacular. The house was beyond all of our expectations and a great deal of thought had gone into special touches just for our family. We travelled from the U.K. and it was worth every jet-lagged mile! We stayed two weeks and only wish we could move in. It was great to meet Zoe and her family who run this all so seamlessly. Communication was excellent and easy, place was a dream, beautiful easy location, perfect weather, delicious food. We're completely rejuvenated and looking forward to coming back one of these days! Mahalo nui loa.
I did not end up staying at the property (it was not available), however, Zoe went out of her way recommending alternatives and advising us about how best to tailor location of our stay to the things that we wanted to see on the island. She is very responsive and I am sure would have been a great host if her rental was available for the dates we requested.
Hale Pono is located in a tranquil rural area where Tropical Rainforest meets Jungle its way down to the Ocean. Located on its own 3 Acre Ohia Forest lot, within a larger property, Hale Pono is very secluded. Its long driveway leads out to a gate on a traditional Hawaii Lava-Rock Track (paved road starts in 0.7 mile towards Volcano and 0.5 mile towards the ocean) . The area is very quiet, very green, always in bloom. Fruit trees abound and the neighborhood is friendly and laid back. Ancient ohia forest screens the ocean view. There are local walks in nature, breathtaking ocean walks, wonderful Panaewa Zoo and Botanical Gardens, Mac Nut farm tours 15 minutes drive , Hilo (paddle-board, surf, swim in the turquoise ocean with giant turtles, spinner dolphins and whales, visit museums, botanical gardens, Imiloa Observatory, waterfalls) and Pahoa (wonderful, unique old town, great charaters, great eateries) are 20 minutes drive, Volcano National Park is 25 minutes drive, most attractions (Warm Ponds, Snorkelling, Lava Tree State Park, Mauna Kea Observatory, Swimming with wild Spinner Dolphins, Black Sand Beach, South Point, Horse-riding in magical Waipio, Rodeos at Parker Ranch, etc.) are between 25-90 minutes drive. There's plenty of parking at Hale Pono - we recommend a 4x4 or bicycle for the road and for widening your scope of adventure - a 4x4 is needed for Mauna Kea stargazing and some of the more spectacular remote beaches. There are places to hire bikes in Hilo and Hale Pono's shuttle can ride you there. Older local 4x4s can be rented for $225 per week and be waiting for you at the airport or delivered to Hale Pono. The Hele-On bus travels the island, can carry 2 bicycles and is only $1 per trip! In general there is plenty of parking at reasonable rates (or free) everywhere on the island
***PLEASE NOTE, Hale Pono is NOT located in Volcano Village, it is about 20 miles down Highway 11 towards Hilo, in a warmer and less damp climate (lower altitude, closer to ocean)***
