Unpleasant experience - do not recommend

  • 1 of 5

I rented this basement apartment for my parents’ stay. We do not recommend that you rent this property: 1) the owner did not adequately address the various issues that arose throughout the three months 2) the internet did not work for days at a time, and the owner did very little to provide a solution 3) the apartment was not ready for our stay. Here is a brief overview of what happened.

The day we checked in, there was no internet. We told the owner right away. It took her a week to get a technician from Comcast to come and diagnose. The technician got the internet to work, but a few weeks later we had the same issue. Long story short, over the course of three months, my parents didn’t have internet for about 2 weeks altogether; Comcast people came three times. There was no internet for the last two nights of my parents’ stay. Despite all of these issues, the owner did not try to provide an alternative solution although I asked on multiple occasions, did not even apologize, and what’s even worse, she acted as if we were making this up and as if we were inconveniencing her. She blamed us for the fact that her internet is unreliable, and implied that we did not know how to use it, or that it was really our laptops' fault, not her internet.

The day we checked in there were several ceiling lights that were out. I asked the owner to replace them. She said her handyman would come, but never did. There was an old bottle of coke abandoned in the fridge. There was a broom, but not a dust pan. No extra toilet paper, no hand soap, no dishwasher detergent, no trash bags, no cleaning supplies… In addition, even though it was November, there were two window A/C units which created serious drafty currents from the open windows. I asked the owner to take them down so that we reduce the currents and conserve heat - no response. We had to remove them ourselves. The apartment wasn’t ready for guests and the owner was uncooperative.

At some point the owner offered a $100 refund for the internet issues, but did not follow up. Even if she had, this would not have changed the fact that there was no real attempt to make my parents’ stay comfortable and make sure that something as basic as the internet is working. We did not appreciate the way we were treated, and the general unhelpful attitude of the owner. We did not appreciate all the hassle. And we certainly didn’t appreciate the lack of reliable internet.

Owner's Response: I tried to resolve the internet problem as best as I could. The son was very bullying in texts and manner. I offered two free weeks of rent and they could find another apartment. I rented the furnished apartment at the rent I would normally rent it at if it were unfurnished. It would be hard to find an apartment in the same neighborhood for the same amount, perhaps this is why they stayed. The apartment has it's own wireless modem and previously to this tenennant I did not have any problems. There was an unusual amount of rain, may have added to the problem , The air conditioners that they removed had been installed professionally, I had not noticed any drafts,, in fact, when I visited the apartment it felt like a sauna they had the heat up very high. The parents were very nice and polite, I'm sorry about the internet problems. The apartment is best suited for active tourists who want to be in a fantastic location.

Great Location!

  • 5 of 5

This English basement apartment is in a great location for seeing everything in DC. It is perfect for a getaway for two! No car needed. Just a couple of blocks from the metro, and within walking distance to great restaurants. Anamaria was great to work with. I'd definitely stay here again and would recommend this place to anyone looking for a good time in DC.

Location is Everything

  • 4 of 5

This is a basement apt. There are six steep steps, light is motion activated for last two steps. If this works for you this is quiet safe apt in a great neighborhood with easy convenient access to all DC sites via walking, metro, bus. Apt is clean and pleasant near good restaurants, Safeway and Whole Foods. Owner lives upstairs saw her once to obtain keys after a voicemail, text and sitting on the stairs for a bit. High walking score would be nice if needed neighborhood info was written down for renter's convenience.

Great location & fabulous hostess!

  • 5 of 5

We were very comfortable in this basement apartment for the week we were there. It consists of a front room, with tv and seating, a galley kitchen and a spacious bedroom with lots of closet space. The bathroom is big enough for one person but it worked for us. Anamaria is a great hostess. Easily reached via text, but she also lives onsite so she can be easily accessed in person too. Any difficulties we ran into (i.e. parking ... which can be a nightmare depending on the time of day) were attended to by Anamaria.

The pictures are extremely accurate and there were no surprises. The Wifi gives a strong signal anywhere in the apartment ... we had no difficulties with this. The A/C worked perfectly as did the appliances and the tv. I found the neighbourhood safe and friendly, although we didn't ever end up venturing out after dark.

The location is great ... especially if you're not wanting to rent a car. Metro is a 5 minute walk. Nearby restaurants include Ruth Chris' Steak House, pizza & sub shops, bagel places. Truly there's nothing you can't find within walking distance.

We were very pleased with our stay, especially given the price we paid compared to what neighbouring hotels were asking per night.

Old and dirty

  • 1 of 5

We stayed for 10 days in this basement, is old (which I do not mind) and dirty, the shower curtains and walls in the bathroom and bedroom have mildew, bath tub very old and dirty (Have pictures) not a regular bath tub and very slippery, bathroom sink is tiny the window and the blind do not work, Wifi did not work most of the time. Living room did not have a regular sofa, the windows were wrap with towels, The front doors are very hard to close and the metal gate was falling apart, one small air conditioner for the unit and not ceiling fans in the bedroom, be careful with all the cables and extension cords all over the place, the entrance was dirty with soil in the front of the house, this is not a well keep unit. The good things about the unit are the kitchen and spacious bedroom.

Owner's Response: I wish the woman who wrote this review had complained to me regarding the cleaning job. She asked for a fan and I immediately gave her one, if she needed an extra air conditioner unit I could have provided it, the English basement is usually very cool. I would have been happy to have the cleaning lady come back and clean again to her satisfaction. The dirt in front of the garden was small, still gardening, was not close to the apartment. The windows all have curtains. The house was built in 1890, it's in a historical neighborhood on a lovely street. I'm sorry she did not like the apartment and hope she is well. Please consider the nice reviews after reading this one.
