Overview

About the property

Small Chalet Cabin, 1 Bedroom + Loft, 1 Bath, on scenic mountain river, Sleeps 3

Whispering Waters is a cozy charming Washington state vacation rental cabin in a rural setting on scenic Skykomish River surrounded by the beautiful Cascade Mountains 60 miles northeast of Seattle.

The cabin's ambience makes it ideal for a couple looking for a romantic getaway, with a river view from the loft king bed, seasonal gas river rock fireplace, and hot tub overlooking a scenic whitewater river with a mountain looming above. The loft's french doors lead to a balcony surrounded by large moss-covered trees, and also has a river view. The small 600 sq ft vacation rental cabin is perfect for two celebrating an anniversary, honeymoon, or a romantic getaway; but can accommodate up to three people.

The cabin is great for a relaxing vacation. The rocking chairs on the cabin's porch provide front row seats to watch the mountain river go by, bald eagles soaring by in the winter, and salmon jumping in the fall.

The 50-jet two-pump hot tub a few steps out the door with river and mountain view is terrific for soaking your cares away while the Skykomish River 'whispers' by. The hot tub is year-round, and is covered with a translucent roof that allows light in while protecting you from the elements.

Also outside is a fire pit next to the river bank with a mountain view.

The cabin is on a semi-private lot: cabins across the river and a full-time residence downstream with fencing and landscaping to provide privacy. The deciduous trees on the river bank are trimmed so you have privacy in the summer without losing the river view.

The king bed in the loft has a river view. A queen bed in the downstairs bedroom provides room for an additional person (note: surroundings may not be suitable for small children due to the abrupt river bank). Sheets and towels provided.

A small kitchen area is set up for simple meal prep, and the dining table seats up to 3 with river view. The kitchen area has a gas range/oven, refrigerator/freezer, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, bean grinder, blender and hand mixer. Starter supply of coffee, tea & hot chocolate provided. Dishes, pots & pans, kitchen towels, flatware & cooking utensils also provided. Charcoal grill on the porch (bring briquettes). Some pantry items are usually available, but it varies so feel free to inquire.

The cabin is super cozy in winter with the river rock gas fireplace. Satellite TV provides 250+ channels, and WiFi provides Netflix and Pandora. There are also board games, puzzles, paperbacks, and Sky Valley area information. At 775 ft elevation, there is not a lot of snow in the winter, but one should be prepared for winter driving approximately late November to March.

Whispering Waters cabin is in a beautiful mountainous area 90 minutes northeast of Seattle, half way between Index and Skykomish, Washington off US Hwy 2. The cabin is close to three wilderness areas (Wild Sky, Alpine Lakes and Henry Jackson) and Mt Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest that offer year round outdoor recreational opportunities. The popular local activities are rafting, kayaking, skiing, hiking, and snow shoeing.

The area around Whispering Waters is not 'touristy', yet attracts thousands of visitors due to the rugged beauty of Washington state's Cascade Mountains and the outdoor recreation. There are dozens of great nearby hiking trails with something for everyone - easy family walks through the woods, waterfalls, alpine meadows, historic Wellington train disaster site, trout-stocked alpine lakes with crystal clear water, historic lookout towers, old growth forests, and rock climbing. The numerous forest service roads are great for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing when the snow level is 1000ft or below.

The cabin is on the south fork Skykomish River, mostly a class II whitewater rafting and kyaking river east of Whispering Waters (3 sets of non-navigable waterfalls three miles downstream/west of the cabin). Mid to late summer the river is gentle enough for river tubes (be prepared for cold water). The main Skykomish, 6 miles west, is a class IV whitewater river, with several local rafting companies providing trips through popular Boulder Drop.

Nearby Stevens Pass ski area (23 miles east) is a popular day-use ski/snowboard area. $55 ski lift vouchers available for purchase with cabin stay. Whispering Waters cabin is on the west side of the pass, so no need to drive over a mountain pass if coming from the Seattle area. The cabin is at 775ft elevation, so the roads to the cabin are usually snow free in the winter; but one should be prepared for winter driving when coming to the mountains in the winter.

Stevens Pass summer activities are mountain biking, scenic chair lift rides, coffee shop, and disc golf Thursday-Sunday.

The south fork Skykomish with it's sparkling clear water is a Washington Scenic River with seasonal (June 1-Aug 30) fishing for trout and white fish. Even though it is a whitewater river, there is a calm area in front of the cabin for cold water swimming on warm summer days. The rapids just past the cabin are mild enough in late summer for family tubing. NOTE: there are three sets of waterfalls starting 3 miles downstream of the cabin. Kayakers and rafters start upstream in Skykomish, 9 miles east. There is a small rocky beach below the cabin and is a good place to enjoy the cool river breeze on the occasional hot day. Chairs can be placed in the cold river water to cool off even more. Western Washington weather is usually mild throughout the summer but there will be some hot days.

There are also horseshoe pits for when you're staying close to the cabin.

We are able to keep midweek rates low, starting at $150/night, while providing quality amenities, as the cabin is owner managed and maintained. There isn't a cleaning fee, unlike most rental cabins, if the cabin is left clean. The rates quoted include cleaning as long as the cabin is left clean.

Single nights are occasionally available between other reservations or last minute. See owner's website (skycabins.com) for last minute discounts and to book single nights. Single night stays, when available, are for two people only.

Arrival time 3pm or any time after; departure 11am or any time before.

AWD is not usually needed to get to the cabin, but one should be prepared for winter driving conditions approx late November-February.

About The Owner

I purchased Whispering Waters cabin as a side career while working as a nurse. I enjoyed it so much that I made cabin rental my full time career in 2000 and still love it. I love the outdoors and try to hike, raft, snow shoe, and cross country ski whenever I can.

The Owner purchased this cabin in 1999

Why The Owner chose Washington

I love this area as it is so beautiful and peaceful. Listening to and watching the Skykomish River 'whisper' by brings me daily enjoyment and I want to share it with others. After twenty six years of living in the Cascade Mountains I am still in awe of the beauty of the river, mountains and the big trees.

What makes this cabin unique

The cabin is owner maintained with many personal touches. It is also more affordable without the huge cleaning fees charged by most property management companies.

Because the owner lives close by, she is able to share knowledge of area attractions, as well as respond quickly to any problems.

Comfortable all-weather wicker rocking chairs on the front porch year round; hot tub with glass cover that provides protection from the rain while maintaining the outdoors experience. Authentic cabin atmosphere.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This is an amazing place well exceeded my expectations. We planned this getaway two months ago choosing from a list of cabins and really lucky that your place is what we found. Will definitely be coming back and reocmmending your cabins to our frineds. I have never been/felt so relaxed until the day we arrived here and know that this is the "Place". So serene when you're outside, looking at the views and listening to the relaxing sound of the river, and when we're in the hot tub after a long day snowboarding. "WOW" I just can't stop saying this is the place for me. MY PERFECT GET-AWAY.

Only bad part, was not having reserved enough time!

  • 5 of 5

From the card left wishing us a happy honeymoon, to the warmth and light the fireplace let off, this was the perfect escape from start to finish.

Janet has thought of everything you may need or want for a trip to the woods. When it says it's on the river, they mean, unobstructed, beautiful access to the river. The view of the bridge from the hot tub is breathtaking. Can't wait to come back!!

Thank you Janet and Brad!

A Terrific Get-Away Spot

  • 4 of 5

We stayed two nights at the cabin, found it well equipped, comfortable, and spotlessly clean. It sits in a great scenic location on the South Fork Skykomish. The hot tub was a nice touch and water was maintained at a hot, 103 to 104 degrees, a perfect temperature for soaking after a day's hike. I am certain we will be returning soon!

Best hide-away just steps from Seattle

  • 5 of 5

We visited Whispering Waters Cabin to end our vacation and celebrate my partner's birthday weekend. It rained all weekend and usually that would take away from a get-away but this cabin was perfect and the rain actually enhanced the experience! We landed in vacation heaven. We slept (the room and bed is very comfortable), read, played games, took a long walk in the rain, spent oodles of time in the hot tub watching the rain and the river going by. We could watch TV and BBQ'ed - it was so relaxing. We already booked our next week.
