Whispering Waters is a charming rental cabin in the spectacularly beautiful Cascade Mountains on scenic Skykomish River 60 miles (90 minutes) northeast of Seattle.
The cabin's cozy ambiance makes it ideal if you're a couple looking for a romantic getaway. The soaring cathedral ceiling creates a romantic ambiance, along with a river view from the loft king bed, loft balcony, and river rock gas fireplace. The loft's french doors open to a view of large moss-covered trees on wooded lots next to the cabin. The balcony is a perfect place for morning coffee as you listen to the river "whisper" by.
The 600 sq ft vacation rental cabin is perfect for two celebrating an anniversary, honeymoon, or a romantic getaway; but can accommodate up to four people for short stays. Base rate is for 2 people/one bed.
If you like outdoor recreation, the cabin's location surrounded by wilderness areas and a national forest make it an ideal base. The hiking is fantastic with trails and roads ranging from easy family walks to strenuous. There is something for everyone including blue alpine lakes, historic lookout towers, alpine meadows, historic railroad sites, mountain top ridge hikes and the Pacific Crest trail that crosses Stevens Pass on Hwy 2. Other popular local activities are river rafting, kayaking, skiing, snow shoeing, rock climbing, and fishing. There is an ORV area close to Gold Bar.
Whispering Waters cabin also provides that much needed relaxing getaway. The rocking chairs on the cabin's front porch are guests' favorites for watching the river flow by and for bird watching-hummingbirds in the garden, mergansers floating down the river and the occasional eagle soaring by.
To add to your relaxing getaway, and to ease sore muscles after hitting the trails or slopes, is a hot tub just steps out the front door. The hot tub has a great river view with the Cascade Mountains looming above the river. The tub is covered with a translucent roof to maintain the outdoors ambiance while protecting you from the elements.
A fire pit next to the river bank provides a great view of a mountain looming above the river. Imagine sitting next to a warm fire on a clear night with stars above. The fire bowl is year-round weather permitting and if there is no burn ban, which is common in the dry summer months. Firewood is not provided but can be purchased at most grocers.
The cabin is on a semi-private lot: two cabins across the river and a full-time residence downstream with fencing and landscaping to provide privacy. The deciduous trees on the river bank are trimmed strategically to provide privacy in the summer without losing the river view.
The king bed in the loft has a river and woods view. A queen bed in the downstairs bedroom provides room for additional people, or if you don't want to climb stairs. Bedding and towels provided.
A small kitchen is set up for simple meal prep, and the dining table seats up to 4 with river view. The kitchen area has a gas range/oven, refrigerator/freezer, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, bean grinder, blender/food processor, and hand mixer. Starter supply of coffee, tea & hot chocolate provided. Dishes, pots & pans, kitchen towels, flatware & cooking utensils also provided. Charcoal grill on the porch (bring briquettes). Some pantry items are usually available, but it varies so feel free to inquire.
This Washington vacation cabin is super cozy in winter with the riverrock gas fireplace. For entertainment, there is satellite TV, WiFi, Netflix, board games, puzzles, a few paperbacks, and Sky Valley area information book.
The area around Whispering Waters is not 'touristy' (i.e. not highly developed), yet attracts thousands of visitors due to the rugged beauty of Washington state's Cascade Mountains and the outdoor recreation provided by the mountains and rivers.
The cabin is on the south fork Skykomish River, mostly a class II whitewater rafting and kyaking river. A good float is from Skykomish to Baring, approximately 9 miles. Be aware that there are 3 sets of non-navigable waterfalls three miles downstream/west of the cabin. Mid to late summer the river is gentle enough for river tubes, though the water may still be cold. The main Skykomish 6 miles west is a class IV whitewater river, with several local rafting companies providing trips through popular Boulder Drop.
Nearby Stevens Pass ski area (23 miles east) is a popular day-use ski/snowboard area. Discounted ski lift vouchers available for purchase with cabin stay. Whispering Waters cabin is on the west side of Stevens Pass, so you don't have to drive over a mountain pass if coming from the Seattle area.
At 775 ft elevation, there is not a lot of snow in the winter, but a short drive up the mountain will usually get you to snow for skiing and snow shoeing. The roads to the cabin are usually snow free in the winter; but one should be prepared for winter driving when coming to the mountains approx. late November to March. Check road conditions and weather report before coming to the cabin Nov-Feb in case you might need traction devices.
For a festive look, the cabin is decorated for the winter holidays with lights and garland.
Stevens Pass summer activities are mountain biking, scenic chair lift rides, hiking, pub, coffee shop, and disc golf Thursday-Sunday.
The south fork Skykomish with it's sparkling clear water is a Washington Scenic River with seasonal (June 1-Nov 30) fishing for trout and white fish. Even though it is a whitewater river, there is a calm area in front of the cabin for cold water swimming on warm summer days. The rapids just past the cabin are mild enough in late summer for family tubing. NOTE: there are three sets of waterfalls starting 3 miles downstream of the cabin. Kayakers and rafters start upstream in Skykomish, 8 miles east. There is a small rocky beach below the cabin and is a good place to enjoy the cool river breeze on the occasional hot day. Chairs can be placed in the cold river water to cool off even more. Western Washington weather is usually mild throughout the summer but there will be some hot days. Even on hot days the night temps drop into the mid 50's or low 60's which cools the cabin for "natural air conditioning".
There are also horseshoe pits for when you're staying close to the cabin.
We are able to keep midweek rates low, starting at $135/night, while providing quality amenities, as the cabin is owner managed and maintained.
Single nights are occasionally available between other reservations or last minute. Single night stays, when available, are for two people/one bed only. You will find more information at Sky Cabins.
Arrival time 3pm or any time after; departure 11am or any time before.
This cabin may not be suitable for small children due to the proximity of the river and stairs.

About Janet Triplett
I started purchased my first cabin, Whispering Waters, and established Mt Index Properties dba Sky Cabins almost 2 decades ago. I have owned and managed several cabins in the area, and apply the professionalism I learned as a nurse and professional yacht crew to my business. I love the outdoors and try to hike, raft, snow shoe, and cross country ski whenever I can. Listening to and watching the Skykomish River 'whisper' by brings me daily enjoyment and I want to share it with others. After twenty eight years of living in the Cascade Mountains of western Washington I am still in awe of the beauty of the river, mountains and big trees.
Janet Triplett purchased this Cabin in 1999
Why Janet Triplett chose Baring
There was a need for lodging for Stevens Pass skiers so I obtained the cabin. I remember my husband asking if I thought it would rent enough to pay the mortgage and being a newbie to the business I said "I think so". The cabin has turned out to be a popular refuge for skiers, hikers, summer vacationers, honeymooners, and those seeking a getaway from the city.
What makes this Cabin unique
The soaring cathedral ceiling provides a true mountain ambiance. The cabin is owner maintained with many personal touches. It is also more affordable without the huge cleaning fees charged by property management companies. Because I live close by, I am able to share knowledge of area attractions, as well as respond quickly to any problems.

We couldn't be happier with our stay at the cabin. Easy communication with the owners, and everything about the place was great -- cozy cabin, amenities inside, beautiful views and, of course, the hot tub.
Hello Andrew, I'm so glad that you enjoyed your time at Whispering Waters. You were great guests and I hope to be able to accommodate you again next time you are in Washington. Janet Triplett
This experience was truly spectacular! The cabin itself was warm and inviting and contained everything you could possibly need for your stay. It was obvious that the owner put a lot of thought into making her guests comfortable. The owner was helpful while at the same time remaining respectful of our privacy. In fact, she left us an anniversary card and a bottle of sparkling wine to celebrate our special time. Incredibly thoughtful. The location of the cabin is nothing short of breathtaking. Sitting right on the river, the rushing waters created a lovely background ambience that enhanced our peaceful stay. The cabin surrounds were also incredibly beautiful, with mossy trees and little white flowers popping up in the lawn for springtime. Gorgeous! We hope to return soon and often. Highly recommended.
Perfect relaxing getaway
Such a serene and peaceful place. Was the perfect relaxing getaway that we needed.
Beautiful well taken care of cozy cabin
I’m a busy self employed mom who needed a place to get away to work on my business taxes and other admin stuff and this place was just perfect. The small towns surrounding the place were fun to explore for coffee and meals, too. The snow capped mountains kocked my socks off it was just a lovely hidden part of the world. Also loved the hum of trains passing and the sound of rain on the roof, just lovely. The biggest shocker was how friendly everyone was in Index and Skykomish, people actually talk to you there and are very warm, a step back in time for sure. Can’t wait to take my kids here to hike!
It was a really wonderful vacation. The cabin was cozy, we had all of the basic amenities that we needed, the sleeping arrangements flawless, and the view is absolutely breathtaking. Definitely hoping to plan another trip
The Perfect Getaway
We loved our 4-day stay at Whispering Waters. The cabin is cozy and has everything needed for a relaxing getaway - a cozy fireplace, a nice hot tub, full kitchen, and gorgeous views of the river right out the back door. And there's so much to do nearby - we snowshoed at Steven's Pass and hiked Wallace falls. The cabin was super clean and stocked with everything needed.
