About Charles Owens

Charles & Faye purchased the home in 2012 and renovated the cottage from top to bottom. We grew up in rural South Georgia and both love history, historic homes & furnishings. On a trip home from the beach ~10 years ago, Faye and I got our first dose of Savannah; we immediately fell in love the with charm and beauty of the City. For the next several years we would visit and dream of one day having our on piece of Savannah. The Captain's Cottage is now that piece for us; we enjoy visiting Savannah every chance we get as well as having the opportunity to share our home with you.

Not only do we enjoy Savannah, but so do our 3 beagles, Belle, Bug and Scout. They love strolling the streets and visiting the squares; most of all they love the attention they attract from their new friends they met along the way. Scout's favorite thing is to stand on the porch and greet the walking tours; he tries to see how many passersby he can sucker into a pet or tell him how cute he is....

We hope you enjoy our home & Savannah just as much as we do and look forward to being available to offer suggestions of our personal favorites.

Charles Owens purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Charles Owens chose Savannah

Each time Faye and I visited Savannah we found ourselves walking through Washington Square; it is magnetic, peaceful and beautifully maintained with manicured landscape. So when we talked about purchasing a property we knew the perfect home would be near our favorite square, Washington Square.

After months of watching the internet listings we contacted realtor, Mathew Allen. In talking with Matthew we decided to look at 2 homes nearby; it took just one visit to the Captain's Cottage for us to know this was it. It was exactly what wished for, 2 houses off Washington Square, 2b/2b, single story with a courtyard..... the perfect choice for us and our Beagles.

What makes this cottage unique

The Captain's Cottage is in the heart of the Landmark District, the oldest section of Savannah. Just 2 blocks from the famous River Street; easy walk to Broughton Street for shopping and dining; there are literally more restaurants within walking distance than I can name.

Every visitor coming to Savannah will visit the Landmark District so stay in the heart of the points of interest.

Our tree-lined street is one of the most beautiful in Savannah. There is no better street for strolling and enjoying the beautiful architecture, warm southern breezes and historic charm. It will take just one visit to see why Savannah is named the 'Hostess City'.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Your house is beautiful. Everything at your fingertips to make your stay so enjoyable. My friends and I toured the city and our stay was wonderful. We enjoyed the park just walking distance from the house and spent alot of evenings there just admiring the beauty of the surroundings.

Again, I have stayed alot of places but, your house is first on my list. If we are ever in the area again that is where we would like to stay. Our concern at first was the parking but, we bought the pass and stayed in front of the house the whole time and walked most places where we wanted to go..

My summer Vacation in the Captain's Cottage in Savannah , Ga.

  • 5 of 5

The stay at the CC in Savannah was wonderful. It was in the most accommodating home and we were able to walk to many of the places we repeatedly wanted to go.

The cottage itself was very comfortable, clean and bright. We stayed three days and made ourselves at home. Everything was easy and worked as it was advertised except the WiFi, but after a quick call to the owner we got it worked out and the stay was flawless from that point on. We found everything we could possibly have needed to make our stay pleasant

The Ten O'Clock exit was tough, but we achieved it with a little team work.

We would highly recommend this Cottage to any one and have talked abut coming back to use it again.

I highly recommend the tour of the Green Historical Home and the Savannah Trolley tours where they dress in period and add more drama to the historical comedic information shared at some of the stops. One of our best meal came from the Cotton Exchange on the River front. we ate ant many named restaurants but this one was the best food.

Owner's Response: Am so glad you y'all had a great time at the Captain's Cottage!! The location and walk-ability to everything is one of our favorite things when we stay as well. Sorry that we had a hiccup with the internet, but glad that Comcast helped us reset the system and could resolve it swiftly. Thank you for the generous compliments and hope that you will come back to see us soon!

Home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

My parents, my husband and I stayed at the Captain's Cottage for three nights while visiting Savannah. From the time of my inquiry the owner, Charles, was very informative and helpful with all of my questions. I had never been to Savannah and it was my first time renting a house for a vacation so I had a lot of questions and Charles always responded within the hour. Charles also was kind enough to call and check on us because of thunderstorms coming in around the time of check in. The house was clean, comfortable and contained everything we needed. I was very impressed with the detail that was taken to assure our comfort right down to night lights to guide us in an unfamiliar house. Everything that we wanted to do in Savannah was within walking distance of the house including River Walk which was only a few blocks away. If you don't want to walk then the tour bus stop and the DOT bus stop are right down the street and will take you all over the historic district. I could definitely have used another day of vacation and I will definitely be back. I highly recommend Charles and the Captain's cottage.

Wonderful stay in Savannah....

  • 5 of 5

We were so very pleased with this property. A splendid little house with lovely decor. Convenient to so many things and just a few steps from pretty Washington Square. We traveled with our pets and they were happy campers too. We really appreciated Charles' suggestions on what to enjoy in Savannah.

The house had all the basics waiting for us and a few extras as well. Overall, we departed wanting to return soon.

wonderful savannah

The Captain's Cottage is just a wonderful little place to stay in Savannah -- a superb combination of modern conveniences and old Southern charm. It is located in a great place -- all other attractions are easy to get to. The house was clean and had everything we could want in a VRBO. We are so glad that Charles and Fern have decided to make this Cottage available to out-of-town guests. We traveled with our dogs and Washington Square is very very near the Cottage, making it a great place to take them to exercise. This dog-friendly town was the perfect place for my twin and I and our 2 dogs to vacation.

The Captain's Cottage sits in the heart of Historic Savannah. Just 2 blocks from the historic River Street; walk the cobblestone and tabby streets just as they were layed in the 1700s. Endless sightseeing, walking and biking opportunities. Savannah is one of the most pedestrian friendly cities in America.

Savannah is easy city to manipulate whether walking, driving, pedicab or public transportation. One of the easiest ways to see Savannah is on of the historic trolly tours; they allow you unlimited on-and-off so that you can enjoy the tour, hop off for some lunch or shopping and back on for another history lesson, doing so as often as you like.

Savannah Shopping is in a class all it's own. You will find some of the finest antiques from around the World; antiques abound from monarchs to cherished family heirlooms. The streets are filled with wonderful boutiques of the latest styles. There is a generous supply of shopping for any taste, age and budget.

There are numerous running, biking and boating opportunities throughout the city. If you are looking for a race to participate several occur throughout the year, from the Rock-n-Roll Marathon to the Bridge Run.

If you are looking for a little slower pace check out one of the many art and house museums; absolutely some of the finest examples of art and homes are available for viewing daily. Enjoy a show at the Lucas Theatre, tour the Green-Meldrim home where General Sherman stayed on his March to the Sea or the lavish Mercer-Williams House on Monterary Square which was featured in the Midnight of the Garden of Good & Evil film; tour the home of Juliette Gordon Lowe, the birthplace of the Girl Scouts of America.

Perhaps one of the most highly anticipated aspects of your trip is dining, Savannah has one of the most outstanding dining selections of any city. The Pink House offers fine dining even a tavern below with wonderful piano music; the Pirates House is located in the oldest building in Savannah; Moon River Brewery has it's own brew selections along with a delicious menu; countless restaurants to suit you breakfast, lunch or dinner needs. Not to mention extensive supply of bars, pubs and nightlife options.

Another one of Savannah's distinct designations, Savannah has been named the 'Most Haunted City in America'. There are numerous ghost tours from trolly, walking, coach and even one riding in a hearse. A fun and entertaining experience to learn of Savannah's haunted tales.

I am glad to help you plan your visit to the city and share my personal favorites.
