About Charles Owens

Charles & Faye purchased the home in 2012 and renovated the cottage from top to bottom. We grew up in rural South Georgia and both love history, historic homes & furnishings. On a trip home from the beach ~10 years ago, Faye and I got our first dose of Savannah; we immediately fell in love the with charm and beauty of the City. For the next several years we would visit and dream of one day having our on piece of Savannah. The Captain's Cottage is now that piece for us; we enjoy visiting Savannah every chance we get as well as having the opportunity to share our home with you.

Not only do we enjoy Savannah, but so do our 3 beagles, Belle, Bug and Scout. They love strolling the streets and visiting the squares; most of all they love the attention they attract from their new friends they met along the way. Scout's favorite thing is to stand on the porch and greet the walking tours; he tries to see how many passersby he can sucker into a pet or tell him how cute he is....

We hope you enjoy our home & Savannah just as much as we do and look forward to being available to offer suggestions of our personal favorites.

Charles Owens purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Charles Owens chose Savannah

Each time Faye and I visited Savannah we found ourselves walking through Washington Square; it is magnetic, peaceful and beautifully maintained with manicured landscape. So when we talked about purchasing a property we knew the perfect home would be near our favorite square, Washington Square.

After months of watching the internet listings we contacted realtor, Mathew Allen. In talking with Matthew we decided to look at 2 homes nearby; it took just one visit to the Captain's Cottage for us to know this was it. It was exactly what wished for, 2 houses off Washington Square, 2b/2b, single story with a courtyard..... the perfect choice for us and our Beagles.

What makes this cottage unique

The Captain's Cottage is in the heart of the Landmark District, the oldest section of Savannah. Just 2 blocks from the famous River Street; easy walk to Broughton Street for shopping and dining; there are literally more restaurants within walking distance than I can name.

Every visitor coming to Savannah will visit the Landmark District so stay in the heart of the points of interest.

Our tree-lined street is one of the most beautiful in Savannah. There is no better street for strolling and enjoying the beautiful architecture, warm southern breezes and historic charm. It will take just one visit to see why Savannah is named the 'Hostess City'.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Your house is beautiful. Everything at your fingertips to make your stay so enjoyable. My friends and I toured the city and our stay was wonderful. We enjoyed the park just walking distance from the house and spent alot of evenings there just admiring the beauty of the surroundings.

Again, I have stayed alot of places but, your house is first on my list. If we are ever in the area again that is where we would like to stay. Our concern at first was the parking but, we bought the pass and stayed in front of the house the whole time and walked most places where we wanted to go..

Excellent house, location and overall experience

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed at the Captain's Cottage for 3 nights in early April.

The house is located a short walk from Savannah River and is close to the downtown shops and market. Washington Square is three houses away - a great place to sit and enjoy the morning sunshine.

The house was impeccably clean and was a good reflection of the information provided in the description. All of the furnishings provided a wonderful feeling of stepping back in time, whilst remaining very comfortable and homely.

Charles provides a superb service. The booking experience was first class. He answered our questions quickly and efficiently.

The entry / arrival instructions were clear and accurate. I'm sure if there were any problems during our stay we could simply have called Charles and he would have sorted them out immediately.

We have stayed in rented houses all over the world and this was right up there as one of the best! Highly recommended for both a great house and an excellent overall service.

We had a wonderful time in Savannah.

Thanks for everything!

Highly Recommend!

This quaint little "cottage" is located on the east end of the historic district. Far enough from the hustle and noise, yet close enough to walk just about anywhere.

The house was clean, well stocked, nicely decorated, and quite comfortable for the four of us. We walked to all the shops and restaurants on the river, downtown, and city market.

Charles was extremely responsive and a pleasure to work with. Definitely consider this rental when you're in Savannah!

Perfectly Comfortable

  • 5 of 5

Four of us enjoyed a wonderful long weekend in Savannah at Captain's Cottage. The two bedrooms were very comfortable and the living/dining/kitchen area was perfect for relaxing. This cottage is so convenient and on a lovely street. Walk to the riverfront, the city market and lots of other Savannah sites. The Pirate's House Restaurant is only a block away and is a must visit! We really appreciated the owner's tips about the city and parking and leaving all necessary supplies for us. A wonderful, comfortable, charming home to rent - - we hope to come again!

Charming house close to everything in Savannah!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Captain's Cottage. The house is VERY clean and decorated so nicely to keep with the age and character of the house. Charles was so accommodating and helpful and in constant communication during our stay, should we need anything. The house is also within walking distance of everything you would want to do in Savannah. We did not rent a car and found that we did not need one. A wonderful stay in a charming house in a beautiful city!

On a 1(poor) to 5 (outstanding) we give this property a 3.5 to 4.0.

  • 4 of 5

Cute house, good location, parking did cost but owner directed us well about parking, chairs and couch comfortable, good TV, beds comfortable but high, a step stool would have been nice to get in the bed. In the front bedroom a bench to put luggage on and to sit on when putting shoes on would have been helpful because the bed was so high. Plenty of towels. The master bedroom shower had a sewer smell that persisted not sure why? The shower in second bathroom is small and the shower handle does not work well so it is hard to set the water temperature. The over head showerhead is not good. You can't soap up because you can't easily get away from the water unless you stand on your tip toes to temporarily direct the head toward a wall then back to its normal position to rinse the soap/ shampoo off yourself. The spray coming out of the showerhead does not feel good on your skin. An explanation about the heating and cooling system would have been helpful as well.

The kitchen was okay. There were dishes and coffee cups for 4 available. We ate breakfast each morning do we needed to do dishes each day. So I did not understand why we're only given TWO dishwasher tablets for a nine day stay. We had to save one for the last day to run the dishwasher as we were directed by the owner so that left one tab for 8 days. There was no way we were going to buy a box of 25 of these tabs for the dishwasher for 9 days. So we had to wash the dishes each day which is okay but the next thing I can't understand is why we were left only ONE small dish towel to dry the dishes for 8 days. We did buy paper towel to use for that. Lastly there was one small trash can under the sink and only TWO trash bags for 9 days. Stingy is the only word I can think to describe these low numbers. Despite the fact the owner was pleasant and took phone calls from us I think we would explore other options if we were to return to Savannah.

Owner's Response: I regret that the Cottage and I did not meet your expectations. However, I do wish when we spoke and text throughout your stay that you had let me know so that items could have been addressed at that time. I do understand that not all appreciate the rain shower head, many find it relaxing and there are two shower options. Had I known of any of your concerns I would have addressed them immediately. I encourage you to communicate timely when there are concerns.

Perhaps one of the most highly anticipated aspects of your trip is dining, Savannah has one of the most outstanding dining selections of any city. The Pink House offers fine dining even a tavern below with wonderful piano music; the Pirates House is located in the oldest building in Savannah; Moon River Brewery has it's own brew selections along with a delicious menu; countless restaurants to suit you breakfast, lunch or dinner needs.
