About Vittoria Thornley
We often holidayed in the Cotswolds and decided to move here permanently in 1998 when our 2 boys were babies. We were looking for a beautiful and tranquil place to bring them up and the Cotswolds was the perfect location. We love the beauty of the area which is rich in history, stunning countryside and picturesque villages and towns full of thriving high streets, independent shops, artists and wonderful food producers and restaurants.
Vittoria Thornley purchased this Cottage in 1998
Why Vittoria Thornley chose Somerford Keynes
We fell in love with our house the moment we saw it. The gardens were smothered in drifts of daffodils (it was April) and the River Thames flowed feet from the kitchen door. It was a magical place full of bird song, beautiful trees and a palpable peace. Kemble Mill Cottage sits on the opposite side of the courtyard from Kemble Mill and was originally part of the old flour milling store which straddled the river where a water wheel would once have turned. In subsequent years, it became the gardener's cottage and once restored by ourselves, we thought it would make an idyllic holiday cottage.
What makes this Cottage unique
The idyllic setting makes the cottage unique, standing on the banks of the River Thames where ducks, swans and moor hens are regular visitors. Despite being so quiet and tucked away, it is only a few minutes drive to all the local amenities. There are beautiful walks right from the cottage door, and should the need arise, we are always close by to provide that extra cup of sugar or pub suggestion for dinner. A large number of our visitors are repeat guests from all the world who enjoy the hospitality and serenity of the location, and some return to take our friendly dogs for a walk!

Lovely cottage, photos don't do it justice. Vittoria was a great host and her directions to the cottage were exemplary!
Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review. It is much appreciated! I'm so glad you enjoyed your stay and that you loved the cottage. Glad the directions helped!
Lovely quiet cottage in fabulous grounds
We had a great stay here for a week with our 9 year old son who particularly enjoyed the tennis court & catching fish in the stream that runs through the beautiful garden. The cottage is in a very quiet location great for exploring the Cotswolds’ Water Park & surrounding areas. Would definitely go back & stay again!
A step back in time
The cottage is perfect for anyone looking for a chance to escape from the hustle and bustle. On our first night, we followed the directions, left by the host, through the beautiful neighboring fields to find a cute pub for dinner. We very much so enjoyed exploring the different activities and city centers throughout the area. Cottage was very clean and felt very private. Great stay with great tips from the host!
Alot of money
We have stayed in alot of holiday cottages over the years and although there was nothing wrong with the cottage with the grounds they stood in being very attractive, we still thought that overall there was very little difference between this cottage and others we have stayed in which have cost two hundred and fifty pound less
Thank you for taking the time to write a review, Brian. Feedback is always much appreciated. We try very hard to provide good value for money. While there are other cheaper cottages, not many are located on the banks of the River Thames, have a riverside patio garden, a field for children to play in (and apples to pick in autumn) and a tennis court for private use. Most of our guests really appreciate the beautiful surroundings and the extra amenities, and often make full use of them.
Wild rabbits, squirrels and even deers in the beautiful garden. Kids loved it. I will definitely stay again in the near future. Vittoria was so nice.
Lovely location! Cozy cottage
The property is gorgeous and well manicured. The cottage is cozy and convenient. We loved our stay. Vittoria is a pleasure to work with.
Thank you so much for taking the time to review your stay. I'm so glad you enjoyed the cottage and had a lovely holiday!
