Why Kenneth and Trudy Snaith chose Bermuda

The Homestead has been in the family for three generations. Maintaining the historic exterior appearance was critical to our plans when the interior was updated to suit modern occupancy. Care was taken that architectural details in the main building such as high ceilings, wooden trim mouldings around the walls close to the ceilings and deep wooden window and door sills, were kept. The carriage house still displays the original rings that tethered retired race horses the owners grandfather imported from New York in the late 1930's. The walled in garden is currently being cleared and will soon be available for the quiet relaxation of Homestead guests.

Comfortable, spacious in delightful grounds

The perfect base to explore St George's and the rest of the beautiful island. Very convenient transport links to Hamilton and Dockyard. Achilles Bay is special and we were the only visitor's on Drew 's Bay. The owners were very friendly and helpful which contributed to a wonderful holiday. We'd love to return.

Great location!

We loved how close we were to everything, the beach, the grocery store, the bus stops and all that St. George's had to offer. The apartment was just the right size for two ladies. The grounds were well kept and had places for us to sit and have our meals outside. We are planning to return.

Cottage in St. George

We are frequent visitors to the lovely island of Bermuda. And due to years of positive and pleasurable stays in this beautiful paradise we've recommended Bermuda to friends and family who also reside in the U.S. We are pleased to say many of them are also repeated visitors....often coming around the end of July to enjoy Cupmatch festivities.

However, our last stay (July 25 through August 1, 2015) in the Snaith’s cottage in St. George was a very disappointing visit. The cottage's façade belied actually what awaited us. A forewarning was the Snaith’s greeting - lacking Bermudian hospitality. Inside, the cottage was neat and appeared clean. But, after we settled in we began to notice that what first appeared as order was just a window dressing. We had to immediately replace a filthy toilet brush, and then there was the disturbing constant peeling of the kitchen cabinet which appeared to have active termite activity (was this an infestation putting guests at risk?). Picture Peaceful nights were impossible sleeping on day beds - too short for average heights. If we stretched out, our feet hung uncomfortably off the end of the bed. Picture # We also were repulsed by a heavily stained and unsightly mattresses. Picture # The furniture in the living room was worn and soiled. At that point we just didn’t trust the sanitary conditions of the cottage. Surely, the hosts thought more of their guests and took a degree of pride in their properties?

But, our entire visit was not marred by the substandard condition of this cottage. We had decided to extend our stay before we arrived in Bermuda and Fortunately!! this cottage was booked after August 1st! That was a blessing. So we found other lodgings in another part of the island and we had a great experience! We were so appreciative that friends who came with us stayed at other guest houses around the island. And, they had no problem with their accommodations. We would have been embarrassed, to say the least, if they stayed at the Snaith’s guest quarters.

Please understand that we do not demand high end facilities or expect perfection. But, we do expect a certain standard of sanitary and comfort. Bermuda is a beautiful island, but a great vacation can quickly turn sour if your lodgings are that compromised. Hopefully corrective action takes place....and soon.

Owner's Response: Dear Visitors, We anticipated that this guest’s holiday would not be off to a good start when she missed her flight and then her husband missed the flight again the following day. In that frame of mind I truly understand why she would perceive any welcome in a less than positive light. I am sorry about that. We are also sorry that she continued to feel aggrieved that we could not accommodate her request to extend her stay in the apartment. For the benefit of future guests we would like to address her specific complaints: The living room furniture is about 2 years old. The mark on the chair cushion in that room is from a glass that was set on it, that remains after repeated washings. All beds in the apartment have standard twin size mattresses and the sofa bed opens to a standard double bed size. It is possible (if requested) to have the twin beds made up as king size if guests feel this is better for them. Toilet brushes are included in the disinfection process of the bathroom after each guests departure and they are replaced if necessary. We tell every guest upon arrival that if they have any problems or concerns, they can feel free to bring them to our attention immediately as we want them to be happy. We never tell guests that they should proceed to replace items in the apartment at their own expense – only that they tell us if they break something or it is damaged. The ‘stain’ on the side of the box spring (not mattress) is a watermark from the mattress being stored standing on its side at some point and not of unhygienic origin. Our apartments are thoroughly cleaned, supplied with fresh linen, clean towels and inspected before each guests arrival. Even so, we find it helpful to advise guests that this is a semi tropical climate and even though the apartment is routinely treated for insects, you will still see bugs that are normal and harmless. The only comments we had from this guest during their stay was a request for a floor length standing mirror and to hand deliver the passport that we informed her she had left in the apartment after her departure. We feel every visitor deserves to enjoy their holiday and if they are truly dissatisfied in the apartment we would be happy to help them find alternate lodging. We can happily report that the guests checking into the same apartment a few days after the departure of this guest, were thrilled with the accommodation. The opinions of our guests are important to us and we appreciate feedback.

my new home away from home

This cottage is beautiful, clean, spacious, and private. I will always choose to stay here while traveling to Bermuda. The owners were wonderful and hospitable and respected my privacy but yet could be reached at a moments notice. This was my first experience with renting a cottage and will alsways travel this way!

Perfect Family Reunion Location

We just returned from a week at Homestead. We are a group of 7 adult family members and boyfriends from 3 different places- 3 from NC, 2 from NYC, and 2 from the UK. We met here for a week and it was perfect. We rented all 3 apartments, so each group had their own place for privacy. Each day everyone went as they wanted to go, and in the evenings, we gathered in the yard for family dinner time. It was a perfect vacation, and Ken and Trudy are great landlords! I would recommend it to any travelers. The location was perfect- easy walk to grocery store, town, and Tobacco Bay (a bit hilly that direction, but taxis will run easily). Quick walk to bus stop as well, or rent mopeds and go on your own. We couldn't be more pleased with our trip.
