About Sigurdur Olafsson

We, Þuríður (Thury) and Sigurdur (Siggi) are a married couple for 49 years, have four girls and 9 grandchildren, we are born 1945 and 1949. We are partly retired. Our land property is 140 hectares = 345 acres. We bought the property 17 years ago and started to build a summer cottage. We have now build a living house and are staying here all year round.

Our land is 50% naturally grown woodland of wild Icelandic willow and mountain birch. In the other half we have planted more than 100.000 tree seedlings, mostly Alaska Pine, Alaska Spruce, Siberian Larch, Icelandic birch and Rowan.

Sigurdur Olafsson purchased this cottage in 1995

Why Sigurdur Olafsson chose Iceland

We are very found of our land, in our eyes it is the most beautiful spot in the world. It is sheltered but have great view over a beautiful Icelandic countryside. If we take a walk few hundred meters up on the hill above us we have a panorama view inland and of the two big glaciers in the south; Mýrdalsjökull and Vatnajökull.

What makes this cottage unique

Our property is ideally located if you like to explore south east Iceland. West boundaries of Vatnajökull National Park is only 30 km to the north of us and stretches more than 300 km to the east. Bus stops only few hundred meters away every morning, driving the mountain trail to Eldgjá and Landmannalaugar and comes back same evening. All major attractions in the south east are within 1 1/2 hour drive from us.

Wonderful rental!

We had a wonderful stay at Giljaland. The views are breathtaking and cabin itself is designed very efficiently and homey. The weather was so perfect that we even had a day on which we used the bbq and ate outside. Lots of thanks to Sigurdur.

Small but gorgeous!!!

  • 5 of 5

We, a young couple with our baby, have absolutely nothing negative to tell about this accommodation! The owners are very nice, in the cottage we found everything we need, we were provided a baby cot directly without the need of asking for it. The cottage is clean, and we especially liked the wooden walls etc. The view from the terrace is gorgeous! Thank you, Siggi and Thury, we definitely like to come back one day!

Didn't want to leave!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here for three nights and were really sad to leave. Fantastic place to stay in a great location. This is a new property, just built this summer and was perfect for the two of us. It has one bedroom with a queen bed and a loft bed above it so a family of three would be comfortable. The bathroom was small but very usable with good storage. There is a small sitting area and a small kitchen with two burner stove and a refrigerator. We cooked all of our meals and were pleased with the cookware that was available. They even had a coffee machine and coffee. We enjoyed sitting out on the patio each morning and night to look out over the beautiful property. It was very quiet and peaceful. We stayed in three different places while we were on our 12 day trip in Iceland and this was our favorite. Owner was very friendly as well.

Fantastic

  • 5 of 5
