|Property type||house boat|
|Minimum Stay||3 nights|
My name is Chris, Captain of the Friendship. I like to welcome you at my houseboat and give you a proper Dutch experience while staying in Amsterdam. I have been very busy as a tour guide for many years,so can tell you many stories if you like.
The houseboat is situated in the centre of Amsterdam on the famous canal called the Single. Staying in this houseboat is ideal for adventurous friends or a small group of backpackers, who doesn’t expect luxury or space. It is a really old dutch houseboat, but all basic needs you find here for a real Amsterdam experience at a low price.
First: The location is very special. It’s in the very centre of Amsterdam and because Amsterdam is sinking but the boat is still floating, the quay is recently damaged but reinforced with pillars that’s why you have a free little sand beach in front of the boat now.
Second: You have a fantastic view from the boat on the romantic canal with its small bridges and warehouses.
Thirdly: Girls of easy virtue, sitting in opposite of the street, are watching over the houseboat till late in the evening.
The houseboat is suitable for a maximum of 4 guests and consists out of four small areas. The main entrance leads you by a small stair (watch out) to a colourful decorated room where you can find two bunk beds. These two bunk beds provide sleeping accommodation for four guests who doesn’t bother and annoy each other. This area also contains a gas heater and a small corner with a desk and a computer.
On the right hand of the entrance you will find the kitchen with everything you need to make your crew a nice meal. Also, it contains a washing machine and dryer.
In the narrow basic bathroom you will find a toilet and shower. The kitchen, toilet and bathroom are shared with the captain.The captains quarters is situated on the right side of the boat.
Outside you can find a small terrace with chairs and a fabulous view over the canal.
Note: Unfortunately the soccer table is no longer with us, but I provide endless stories about this when you arrive.
This rental is for a room, not the entire house boat. You share a bathroom and a kitchen. Me and my fiance slept on bunk beds. The owner had a party right outside the houseboat the day we arrived, Kings Day. People in and out of the boat using the bathroom, kitchen. No computer , Wi-Fi, table with 4 chairs, fooseball table. Very awkward situation. The company, directstay, is a nightmare to deal with. They use a call center which will then email you back. They never answer the email correctly just a canned response
As I told the owner, nobody wanted this rental to work out more than me. He recently changed the overview on Homeaway to be more truthful about the reality of the rental, but my experience with him and his company was soured by the lack of communication and monetary reimbursement. Here is the truth about the boat:
* The location is good. You can walk from the train station and the canal is beautiful although you must step over a downed police barricade to enter the boat, which is unsettling.
* The boat meets basic needs although the toilet is set on top of a step and can be challenging. A part of the floor in the bedroom is collapsing.
* THIS IS CRITICAL!!! - When you inquire about the boat, the owner will reply through a company called DirectStay. I believe this is to avoid Homeaway’s fees and is run by the owner of the boat. By booking through DirectStay you do not have the option for any of Homestay's protection services. I feel this is deceptive and when pressed, the property owner gave no explanation.
* When I made the booking, the description read "good for adventurous families". I have an adventurous family and I have traveled the world many times over, but there is a difference between adventurous and potentially dangerous. Here is what I mean:
-- When I booked the boat, there was no mention of the fact that there are prostitutes in windows right across the street. They are the first thing you see when you wake up and the last thing you see when you squeeze your way onto the boat at night.
-- The "beach" now in the description was not mention before. To call it a beach is, again, being deceptive. When we arrived, the "beach" was littered with garbage (also on the boat), a patio umbrella, a canoe, a reclining chair, and two unexpected guests. After our first night, we woke up to the police and social services confronting the two men who spent the night on the "beach". The confrontation was scary for my son, essentially locked us in the boat until it was over and made us uneasy. When we returned that evening, we were approached by one of the men staying on the “beach” and his demeanor was unstable. It was time to leave and we were not compensated fairly for the place not meeting our expectations.
ADVICE: DO NOT RISK IT.
very useful and beatiful place to live without problems on transport, (it's only five minute from dam square),,we enjoyed very much the boat and the owner was very cheerful and friendly :) so if you have to book a holiday in amsterdam,take on mind this location.....you will spend great time :)
The boat is very confortable, clean, in a great location. Sandro welcomed us and he was very courteus. A great place to stay
Tutto quello che potevamo desiderare.. una casa piccola ma confortevole per 4 persone! tutto come da descrizione.. il proprietario è stato molto gentile e ci ha sempre aiutato quando lo abbiamo cercato
The apartment is situated in the centre of Amsterdam on the famous canal called the Singel. This boat is located very close to a small red light district.
You are just a two-minute walk away from the Central Station. Also the famous Dam Square is very close by. Here you can find the well known shopping streets like the Kalverstreet and Nieuwendijk.
In your neighbourhood, you can find a lot of vintage stores, coffeehouses, coffeeshops, and various restaurants that serve food until late at night.
But also, you are just a minute away from Dam Square, where you can find the famous shopping street called the Kalverstreet. Here you can find more well-known stores and warehouses.
Further more you are surrounded by beautiful and romantic area’s, such as the canals, the old Jordaan and entertainment squares which provide you a swell nightlife like the Leidsesquare and Rembrandsquare, but also the illustrious Red Light District is very nearby. Visiting other famous areas in and around the centre of Amsterdam should not be too much of a problem. Due to the city’s compact nature spots like the Museum, Rembrandt and Leidse square, as is the Vondelpark, are just a twenty minute walk away. If you are not that fond of walking public transport is provided all around this location. For instance you are just a couple of meters away from the tram station and furthermore you’re close to the Central Station where public transport can easily lead you to different areas of the city.
