The gardens is a private gated community of only 10 detached houses located approximately halfway along one of only two roads to the beach. Casa 2 is a stand-alone rancher divided into a larger 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom house and a smaller 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment. Each unit can be rented separately or together - there is NO connecting door, however, only separate entrances (please see notes below for pricing for the 2-bed unit). The units have their own driveway and garden and the community pool is about 50 yards away. Next to the pool is a rancho with a large table, seating and barbeque for get-togethers.
Casa 2 was built approximately 10 years ago by an American developer who built 6 of the homes in the community and still resides in one. Using local craftsmen, native wood and colourful tile, our house has an authentic and charming Costa Rican or 'Tico' style. It is clean, simply furnished yet has all amenities and is freshly painted.
There are two units: the house unit (approx 950 sq ft) has a large covered patio with a laundry area at the back containing a washer & dryer (shared by the apartment if rented). There is a full kitchen with stove and fridge next to a dining and living area. Sliding doors open to another small covered patio at the front. There is a bathroom with a barrier-less shower and two large bedrooms, one of which has another bathroom ensuite and a safe. The master bedroom has a queen bed and plenty of wardrobe/storage space. The second bedroom has two single beds, plenty of storage and a safe. There is cable tv, a phone for local calls (all Costa Rica) and wired/wireless internet. Fans and air conditioning are in each room. The house sleeps four.
The apartment unit (approx 550 q ft) has a small patio in front of its own driveway. It has an open floor plan, with a full kitchen on one side and a living/dining area on the other. A small bedroom with a queen bed, a safe and lots of closet space is at the back next to a full shower room. There is cable tv, a phone for local calls, wireless internet and air conditioning throughout. The apartment sleeps 2.
Outside each unit, there is a shower for rinsing off beach sand. We have a mango and an almond tree and plenty of native flora and birds. A couple of years ago, we built two arbours over each driveway and planted bougainvillea which seem to be growing at the speed of light!
Mr & Mrs Smith are British-Canadians with a thirst for travel. After leaving England in 1980, they've lived in Alberta, California, Oregon and BC, recently moving from the mainland to gorgeous Vancouver Island. They live on a small acreage by the sea and enjoy cruising the west coast on their boat in the summer.

They fell in love with Costa Rica after a fabulous vacation with their sons in 2004, and started researching the best locations, settling on the NW Pacific coast for its pristine waters and Playa Hermosa for its beach and village atmosphere. Their duplex rancher is 'home away from home' as their fellow neighbours in The Gardens (Canadian, American & German) are great friends and create a wonderful welcome every January to March (making the house usually unavailable).
Costa Rica is not Florida or Hawaii. And with its lack of resorts and low crime, it isn't Mexico either. It is still third-worldly with dirt roads, parched fields, power failures, iguanas, spiders, rough shacks, chickens in the road and little sense of urgency or schedule. But if you like the sound of birds, monkeys in the trees, stunning foliage, friendly people, zip-lining, fishing, floating in the waves, unbelievable coffee and the sense that you have truly left home, then Costa Rica just might be for you.
My family and I stayed here for the Christmas 2017 holiday. We loved the home like feeling of the units, which provided us the opportunity to live like the locals. The short walk to the beach was enjoyable and permitted us to feel isolated from the resort environments (If I wanted to hang out with more Americans on the beach, I'd head to Florida!). The community swimming pool was never crowded and always clean. Corby was a joy to work with. I only subtracted one star, as the units need some maintenance (i.e., fridge, stovetop, etc.) to be fully functional, but they were appropriate for our week long holiday.
On another note, I highly recommend avoiding booking with Greddy Rojas Mena (of Sunset Hermosa), who is apt to approach you when you enter the beach; his small building is to the immediate right of the beach's entrance. Greddy offers multiple outdoor adventures including fishing, snorkeling, jet skiing, stand up paddle boarding, snorkeling and horse back riding. We booked a two-hour horseback ride for a party of five, during which we were promised beach and mountain vistas. After payment, Greddy informed us that the horseback ride left from an adjacent beach which required car transport. Luckily, we had rented a car and were able to accommodate. Our "tour" left from someone's personal property, on poorly cared for horses, and went through the neighborhood pathways. At no point did we see mountains nor a beach! To top it off, the guide ended the tour after exactly one hour, without explanation or accommodation when we explained we had paid for two hours. As Greddy was the booker of our tour, we discussed the issue with him. He was unwilling to refund any money, instead placing the blame on the horse owner (i.e., Alonso Fallsasl). Our group was immensely disappointed with the whole experience. While Sunset Hermosa may have made profit on this transaction, they were not wise, as the lost our repeat business. I would highly recommend taking your business to another provider.
We just returned from a wonderful 8 week stay at this lovely home in Playa Hermosa. The accommodations met all of our expectations. The house was clean, comfortable and well equipped. This small gated community was well cared for, friendly, and we felt safe. The property management was excellent, communicating with us easily and addressing any concerns quickly and efficiently. We chose to rent a car for the middle 6 weeks of our stay so that we could explore further inland and down the coast. The roads were better than expected and driving was not a problem. A car is not essential though since the local tour operators will pick you up at the house, and taxi and bus rides to nearby lively Playas de Coco are easy and inexpensive. We enjoyed the peace and quiet of Playa Hermosa. The beach is beautiful and an easy walk from the house. There are several beach bars where watching the sunset with a margarita is the best, there are several fine restaurants, and there is a local grocery store and butcher shop that have everything you need. From this location, we zip lined, went horseback riding, enjoyed mud baths and thermal pools, hiked the rainforest to see waterfalls, went fishing, and enjoyed a river trip to see monkeys, exotic birds and crocodiles. The sunset cruises and snorkelling were fun too. We found that this property was in a great location and we had no trouble filling our 8 weeks with a combination of relaxation and adventure. We had an excellent holiday and will definitely consider returning!
We were here for the last part of our Costa Rican Trip. The property manager took very good care of our needs and communicated well with us via email before our arrival. This place is exactly as pictured, in a nice little gated community, the pool was great, the house had everything we needed and we were just a 5 minute walk to the beach. We loved it there. Could walk anywhere if you wanted restaurants and just to look around. We definately want to come back again.

Five minute walk to a beautiful beach. Walked this beach every day. Sometimes twice a day. Checking out the high and low tides. And yes a few happy hours spent at the beach pubs.
Pool in the gardens for us to also enjoy. Other home owners and guests of this gated community were so friendly. Most of the time we were alone at the pool.
Saw the Howler Monkeys many times walking to the beach. So cute!
We went to other beaches in the area also. All fantastic.
No need for a car. Ten minute walk to the grocery store. This store has everything you need. Food, liquor and pharmacy.
Town of Coco close by for any other shopping. $12 taxi gets you there. Only did this a couple times.
Went fishing a few times. Not me personally fished but I got to spend five hours on the water! Saw turtles, dolphins, snakes, sting rays, jelly fish and worked on my tan. The boat picked us up right at the beach!
We went with friends zip lining, tubing and horse back riding. Friends had a car. One hour drive to get there. Was a blast!
I have absolutely nothing bad to say about my holiday. I am very early morning riser and early to bed lady. Was not looking for night life holiday. Wanted a relaxing holiday and I got what I wanted!
Will definitely be going back!!!
We had a wonderful time in Hermosa & definitely recommend this place for anyone considering a vacation in Costa Rica. The owner responded quickly to our inquiry and the management company was professional and efficient. Two thumbs up!
This past spring break, we travelled to Costa Rica with another family. Renting these two side-by-side units was perfect! It gave us an opportunity to stay together, cook together and hang around together in the evening, enjoying the warm Costa Rican breeze.
We did a lot of cooking in the two units. They were well equipped with all of the utensils and appliances that we could have possibly needed. It really helped to keep our costs down (4 adults and 3 hungry teenagers).
We also had an opportunity to visit and dine at many of the local restaurants. There are several to choose from in the area, and those situated along the beach front are particulary wonderful for catching the evening breeze and glorious sunset!
A local guide (arranged through the owners of this property) took us out on a wonderful day trip to visit the jungle and experience the food, culture and vast flora and fauna of Costa Rica.
We liked this property so much that we have not only recommended it to others, we have also passed along the information to a travel agent friend of ours. It's situated in a perfect area with easy access to the beach and to the town of Playa Coco. Playa Hermosa is a nice quiet place to be. When you want night life, Coco is just a 10 minute cab ride away.
On the property, there is a wonderful pool for cooling off. The entire property is safe and secure and well maintained. We were very pleased with the way everything was kept.
We had a wonderful vacation and created a great number of memories staying in these bungalows.
Playa hermosa, Guanacaste, is a small village approximately 30 mins drive from the Liberia airport, (which is 8 miles west of the city of Liberia). Playa Hermosa is a mostly residential area with a gorgeous, 3km long beach, acclaimed for its beauty and cleanliness. This beach is a mere 5 minute walk from the house - look for the local howler monkeys in the trees! There are a number of bars and restaurants, from casual to high-end dining, two small supermarkets, an ATM, launderette and various stores, all within walking distance (up to 15-20 minutes). Several boutique hotels offer evening entertainment and other amenities such as spa services and tour bookings for non-guests. For more action, grab a taxi to Playas del Coco (called Coco by the locals), a busy, touristy town with lots of shopping, restaurants, supermarkets, nightlife and even a casino.
With all basic amenities, it is possible to stay in Playa Hermosa without renting a car. There are plenty of taxis and tour operators who will pick you up from the house. This plan would suit those who like to walk, blend in with the locals or who need a casual or short vacation. Alternatively, we often rent a car for a few days so we can travel more freely and widely. A good time to do that is upon arrival, since the cost of a days car rental or a taxi from the airport to Hermosa are similar. It would also allow you to visit more of the fabulous coast or explore inland towards the volcanoes.
