My wife and I used to travel west to the Vancouver area Islands with our two children when they were small. We explored the beaches and tidal pools enjoying morning coffee while the kids beach combed, went fishing and hiking, and kayaking. The ocean always has wildlife activity geese, otters, seal and a lot of crab, shrimp and fish.
We rented a house out here in Sooke in 2000 after we completed a week of trekking on the West Coast Trail - and it was a luxurious end to a great experience.
gordon fika purchased this house in 2005
We wanted an area close to a city, yet away from it all.
We selected this property because of its spectacular view and quietness, and its location: it's just a short walk to serious coffee, a number of restaurants and groceries.
We just built (sep. 2012) a contemporary west coast style inviting house designed by a Victoria architect: it is quite an improvement to the old house torn down in 2007.
We wanted a clean, efficient and strong house. It is warm and cosy, energy efficient, and built to current seismic standards.
WOW, is the word heard most often when people come for a visit. We have a truly stunning view from most rooms in the house and the guest house. You can walk down the 25 steps and explore the beach in low tide. Or sit out in comfort on the decks looking right into the water.
On clear nights you can watch the moon rise and travel, accross the Sooke basin, its reflecting lights playing on the often still waters of the basin.
Handy but away from it all.
We recently rented this beautiful oceanfront house for a long extended weekend, and we couldn't ask for a better place to stay. We had 2 families (4 adults, 3 kids) staying together and everyone LOVED this house. It is modern in design with high-end finishings and appliances and very well-maintained. The open-concept layout of the house made it very spacious and comfortable for everyone. All floors and almost all bedrooms had breathtaking views of the water. There were lots of sitting areas (indoors and outdoors) to lounge and relax. The home is fully stocked with cookware, cleaning supplies, and some toiletries. The kitchen was well-designed and functional with all the appliances you need to cook meals for a large group. Gordon was very responsive and made booking quite easy. We didn't have to contact him once during our trip, because everything we needed was already provided.
The house is located only 30 min from Victoria Inner Harbor and close to many beaches and parks. Groceries (Village Market) and other necessities were close by in the main town area of Sooke. We would recommend Stickleback West Coast Eatery for lunch and Stick in the Mud Cafe for your coffee fix. For a nice day excursion, we would recommend the East Sooke Regional Park that has pocket beaches, wonderful tide pools that kids can explore, and an easy kid-friendly trail from Aylard Farm to Becher Bay.
It's very hard to find a house that appeals to everyone in a large group and Gordon's house totally lived up to all our expectations! We would have loved to stay longer. We will definitely come back again and recommend Gordon and Teresa's beautiful home to all our friends.
We were able to gather people from three families for the weekend and had a wonderful time. The house offered a space for everyone and enough privacy to enable us all to enjoy our time there. The BBQ was perfect and the house is very well equipped for your every need. The views were amazing and we saw eagles and seals out the window. The place was impeccably clean. There were plenty of activities in the region for us all to take up - kayaking - whale watching - touring. We got fresh prawns just down the road. Lots of great memories - I hope we can come back again!
Loved this rental! My family and I stayed here for the long weekend. There was 12 of us, aging from 20-85, and everyone loved the place. The photos do not do the home justice, it is absolutely beautiful. Gordon and Teresa have the home fully stocked with any cleaning supplies needed, all the cookware you could possibly need, and simple toiletries, and with everything labelled nicely so you know where it belongs. Sooke is very close, walking or driving distance. The home was extremely clean and had a binder full of instructions.
We will definitely inquire about renting again in the future!
We rented the property in Sooke after seeing all the beautiful pictures and reading other great reviews. My family of five (2 adults, 3 teenage sons) spent a week at Gordon's property on the water and it lived up to expectations. The house is spacious and well-maintained. We love nature and being away from it all and this fit the bill. We were close to fishing and whale watching and other hiking/swimming. The beaches close by and also scenic and a great day trip. Groceries and other necessities were also very convenient. Gordon was very responsive when we had some trouble with the wifi. All the locals we met were surprised that we decided to vacation in Sooke but we kept letting them know that we got exactly what we were looking for - a great time in a beautiful location.
We are a group of 10 ladies aged 50 plus who like to travel and explore new locales. We came to Sooke with the intention of doing as much as possible. We sure did.
The house was wonderful. Clean, airy, bright and the view is unbeatable. The kitchen was fabulous with all the tools you would ever need for cooking. We cooked using the local seafood each night.
All bedding and linens were of the best quality. We enjoyed the media room in the evenings ,also very comfy.
The users manual for the house and it's appliances was greatly appreciated.
The bedrooms were lovely and quiet with the front ones having the night time ocean sparkling as your view as you drift off. The neighbourhood also very quiet. Breakfast and sometimes lunch on the deck with a view of eagles, otters and geese living their lives.
All in all a wonderful place to stay.
This property is superb, enough said. The ocean front location provides spectacular views and those are almost rivaled by the architectural stylings of the interior.
The location is peaceful with views of the stars and bright moon in the evening, sometimes interrupted by appearances of geese families or seals! Sooke town is a short 2 minute drive away to everything you would need from groceries to Shoppers to liquor to Banks. Our itinerary included several hops to Victoria, and that was a short 30 minute drive away.
We spent every morning on the deck just enjoying the peaceful scene of the ocean.
The neighbours around the property are friendly and we chatted a few times. They are very quiet.
Inside, the pictures of the interior speak for themselves. What was above and beyond at this property was that EVERY detail was addressed. Countless times, we wondered in our heads, is there a particular kitchen utensil, are there binoculars, is there a lighter.....it was ALL there. Almost like the owners are mind readers!
Having two young kids that tend to get muddy, the laundry room was incredible. Not only washer and dryer, but fully stocked with detergent, SHOUT, dryer sheets, and OxiClean. Now that's impressive!
This is not a negative, but the TV media room (as impressive as it is...massive TV and sound system) was largely ignored by the family as we mostly enjoyed the outdoor space instead!!! Sometimes unplugging is good.
Booking and checking in was a breeze and we felt fully taken care of by the owners. We would definitely return and recommend this property to friends and family. We had a family of 6 over (booked the main house only) and there was plenty of room for us to roam around, and sometimes have our own space away from each other.
The "Operational Handbook" binder was a great touch. It gave many details on operating appliances and things like wifi or the fireplace.
Not entirely related to the property, but locally we ate at West Coast Grill (dinner), Stick in the Mud (coffee), Mom's Diner (great pie!), and Shirley Delicious (30 minutes west, great organic fare). All were great.
The only 'negative' is that the beachfront is steep and rocky. Not safe for kids, but we knew and understood this going in to the booking.
Last word, if we were to buy a vacation property, this would be the one.
Whale watching charter is a couple blocks away.
Fishing charters are next door and 2 doors down.
5 km from the Galloping Goose trail.
5 km from a zip line.
40 km from Bear Mountain golf, and 7 or more other courses within 30 minutes or so by car.
A short drive to the south trail head of the West Coast Marine Trail.
Across the basin from East Sooke regional park.
Crab fishing/Shrimping in the waters just off the property.
