Gumbo YaYa means many flavors in the pot at once -- or many people talking at once -- and everyone in your group will be talking about how perfectly matched this space, the location, and the City of New Orleans are for your group! Whether you're coming for a wedding, a family reunion, a girls' trip, a couples' getaway, or "just because", the all new Gumbo YaYa is the place to be if you're looking for a special New Orleans experience.
The space is a 2,800 sq ft, very ample apartment with five bedrooms, four baths, two full kitchens, two laundry rooms with washer/tumble dryer and and views of the French Quarter skyline. An architecturally unique space, it is part of a rehabilitated warehouse built in the early 20th century. There are many brick walls throughout the apartment and the large industrial windows overlook the rooftops of the French Quarter.
The apartment is furnished with beds enough to sleep up to 16 guests and the style is colorful and eclectic, very much like the Big Easy! It will most definitely be a unique New Orleans experience! There are six TV's in the apartment: a 32' LCD flat screens in each of the four bedrooms, a 50' LCD flatscreen in the living room, and a 55" TV in the crazy and comfy "dorm" room. Both kitchens are fully outfitted with dishes, pots and pans, coffee makers, toaster ovens, etc, and each has a built-in microwave, full-size fridge with a great ice-maker, and full-size electric stove. All four bathrooms have shower-over-tub configurations.
Many world-famous restaurants are just steps from the apartment and the entire French Quarter is just outside the gates. The Canal Street Streetcar is just a block away and will take you all over the downtown area, as well as out to City Park and connects to the St. Charles line which takes you Uptown to the Garden District.
Bourbon Street is literally steps away (75 ft) and shopping on world-famous Royal Street is only two blocks away. Frenchmen St is an easy walk at 12 blocks down river, and you'll have lots to see along the way. The Mississippi River is just six blocks away, as well as the Aquarium, the Canal Street ferry (a delightful and inexpensive way to cross the Mighty Mississippi to Old Algiers Point), Jackson Square, St. Louis Cathedral, and much, much more. There is a cool little grocery store only six blocks away that carries many locally made foods, and corners stores abound throughout the Quarter where you can pick up liquor and mixers, snacks and toiletries. No car needed!
After the days' tours and trips around town, bar-hopping and foodie forays, you can come "home" to a spacious, comfortable, cool and quiet spot to relax, unwind, share your adventures, and get a good night's sleep so you can get up and do it all over again!
I led a group of guys, many of whom were visiting New Orleans for the first time. The setup and design of these apartments was absolutely perfect. To top it off, the location (steps from Bourbon) was even better!
We also had great weather one afternoon and were able to take advantage of the complex's rooftop pool - it felt like a private pool as nobody else was there at the time.
I spent hours searching the available listings and highly recommend you book this ASAP. It was even better than advertised - the pictures (although nice) don't even do it the proper justice. The Owner and property manager were also extremely responsive and easy to work with.
I rented this for my extended family to stay in for my son's wedding. It is conveniently located in the French Quarter within walking distant to the French Market, Jackson Square and all of the sights in the area. One of the bedrooms and the living room face Bourbon St. so it can be a little noisy.
The space looks just like the photos. Bright colors, interesting artwork and fun lighting and accessories. The space is actually two adjacent apartments. Located at the end of the hall it is easy to go back and forth. The apartment facing Bourbon St. contains the living room with lots of seating for everyone. The comparable area in the second apartment is the "dorm style" bedroom with two king beds and a twin. The space is open to the kitchen area. It was fine for our close-knit family of late sleepers.
The kitchen is well furnished with dishes, flatware, pans, coffee maker, and basic seasonings. The bathrooms are nice. Our one complaint was the water pressure. Elizabeth informs me that It has to do with the pump they use to get the water to rise in the old buildings. The owners can't replace it because the Vieux Carre Commission won't allow such an overhaul on the historic buildings in the Quarter. Even though the water pressure was poor, there was lots of hot water even though everyone seemed to be showering at the same time in preparation for the wedding. The beds were comfortable and there were lots of blankets available when the temperature dropped over the weekend. There were plenty of bath and kitchen towels.
We did park a car on the parking deck which is conveniently located right at the end of the hall. If you are driving, use the Central Parking garage and park on the 6th floor and then unload your luggage.
Elizabeth was great to work with. Initially she was very responsive to my e-mails. As my visit approached, she sent extremely detailed and thorough instructions about arrival procedures, building access, etc. By the time you read her instructions and study the photos all your questions are answered.
Our stay in Gumbo Yaya was as enjoyable as our visit to New Orleans. I highly recommend it.
We are from Baton Rouge and stayed for four nights. Location is excellent. Recommend parking around the corner, 25$ a day with in and out privileges. Had a few minor issues upon checkin and Angela and Elizabeth were very responsive to address. The units are a half a block from bourbon street and all rooms were essentially noise free, with exception of moon and stars room which was a little noisy from street activities below. It was Bayou Classic football weekend so the parties on Bourbon went on all night into the morning! Security is very good as access to the building is controlled and a security officer has the night watch. There is an outside swimming pool, community barbecue area, and community sitting area all on the fourth floor. An elevator is available to transport your stuff. The beds were comfortable and the linens and supplies were perfect. Just like home! We enjoyed our time in the Gumbo Ya Ya. The weather was perfect. Very easy access from the interstate. Walking distance to everything in the French Quarter. We love New Orleans!
I secured Gumbo YaYa as a surprise for my cousin's destination bachelorette party. We had 9 women ranging from age 24 to 62 and I could not have chosen better! Having two apartments allowed those of us in the "older" group to depart from the "kids" when we were ready to hit the hay yet the full party was perfectly comfortable hanging out in the unit with the spacious lounge area. And unfortunately, we had a total wash out one day as it rained horribly all evening so the hang-out apartment became our party locale for the night. It could not have been more perfect! Kitchens are perfect for home bars and snacks, and the entire place has recently been renovated making for a beautiful backdrop for bachelorette games and great photos. The building is located in the perfect spot with a front entry onto Bienville and back entry onto Iberville...famous ACME Oyster House and Arnaud's both right outside the doors. Bourbon for partying, Royal and Canal for shopping...all within a few blocks. Elizabeth was there for me whenever I needed her prior to our arrival and Angela right on top of any request or need we had while there. Our group is already talking about doing this again for the next Nola trip! If Nola is your idea of an adventure, then Gumbo YaYa is the place for you!
I recently rented Gumbo YaYa for a bachelor party, group of 12, in October. I am always concerned about space when staying with a large group of people, but let me tell you, this place was PERFECT! First of all, it is beautifully renovated, and decorated perfectly. The beds were extremely comfortable, and the apartments flowed well for the group size. We could have easily fit a couple more without issue. The living room with couches and chairs was perfect for lounging before hitting bourbon street, and the kitchens were sizable enough for us all to hangout and enjoy a drink together share stories from the nights on the town. There were plenty of bathrooms for everybody!
As for location, you literally CANNOT get any better than this. It is a half block off bourbon street, right in the center of everything, although once you step inside, it is nice and quite to sleep and relax. It is walking distance to all the major attractions in town, as well as all the bars and restaurants!
If you are looking for a place to go with a large group, this is definitely the place!
Elizabeth and Angela were both awesome to work with, very responsive, and made sure everything was taken care of.
I will definitely be staying here in all future visits to NOLA.
Located in the French District, one-half block from Bourbon Street is a great place to stay while visiting NO. Seven family members were there for 4 nights and were able to walk (safely) to every location within the District. Plus, tours picked us up at the front door. Very comfortable with lot's of room, very safe, very clean, very quite! Can't ask for more. Worth every penny and more.
