'Wildwood in the Pines' is a rustic log home with some elegant and unique features located in Jay, NY. This cozy cabin has pine interior, heated tile floors, and a beautiful rock fireplace. A fully equipped kitchen, living and dining area, loft, two large bedrooms, family room with rustic bar, laundry room, two full bathrooms and a large deck makes this an ideal four season getaway for a family or a group of friends.
'Wildwood in the Pines' is located less than 9 miles from Whiteface Mountain and only a 20 mile scenic ride to the Village of Lake Placid and the Olympic Center Complex. Montreal, Canada and Burlington, Vermont are less than two hours away (great day trips!)
The High Peaks area of the Adirondacks offers many activities such as hiking, golf, biking, rock climbing, kayaking, canoeing, downhill skiing, cross country skiing, ice skating, as well as shopping and fine dining in nearby Lake Placid. Fish in the Ausable River or swim in the famous 'Jay Swimming Hole'!
This quiet spot is also ideal for that much needed rest and relaxation. Read a book on the deck, take a walk, or relax in the whirlpool tub.
To start off the Photos do not make the cabin justice . It was beautiful and spacious ! Everything was great and the property was private . The only problem we had during our trip was the ice. The car could not get not up the driveway so we had to push it up and add some snow for traction . The other problem was that the fire pit was not dug out and we had to shovel it out . We also shoveled the snow off the balcony. However, overall, we will be visiting again soon.
This was a great cabin. Off the beaten path and very well decorated.
The cabin was almost perfect! Almost.. (read below)
Amy, Bauer (dog), and I arrived late Thursday evening and Lorri had the caretaker leave the lights on for us. We found the cabin very clean and inviting. As we settled in the snow fell and we were thrilled with our home for the weekend.
We awoke Friday and enjoyed coffee in the beautiful main room looking out at mother nature and the freshly fallen snow. Friday we skied Whiteface and cooked dinner in the cabin, then read and played board games. The kitchen had everything necessary for most meals, with plenty of dishes, flatware, and silverware. Saturday we drove into Lake Placid, toured the Olympic sites and shopped. Saturday evening we had a fantastic dinner at the Hungry Trout maybe 5-8 min drive.
The cabin is situated in a heavily wooded neighborhood of winding but easily navigable gravel roads off RT 86. If rustic and tranquil is what you're looking for, BINGO. Its about 5 mins just to get back to a paved road. The town of Jay offers basic shopping for essentials and gas, but Lake Placid about 20 mins away is the closest substantial grocery, hardware, sports stores.
The only major flaw we found with the cabin was the fireplace and heating. I was 100% expecting a wood burning fireplace or worst case a gas/propane insert. The beautiful stone hearth has an electric insert that is slightly warmer than room temperature. The listing does not specifically state anything about the fireplace (only that the cabin has one) so shame on me, but I envisioned a romantic setting with a fire warming us as we read and played games. This was not the case. Friday night it dipped to about 2F (NOT COLD for Lake Placid/Whiteface/Adirondack High Peaks where winter nights often dip to -20F). Maybe we were doing something wrong but we had both thermostats set to 75F-80F and the temperature in the living room barely reached 60F. By all means this is livable, but Amy found it a bit chilly and we certainly wished we had a fire putting out a few more BTUs. The heated tile floors in the living room, kitchen, master bed and bath are a nice touch but appear to be the only heat source for the main level. Instead we plugged in both space heaters (provided), used some of the throw blankets and drank plenty of hot chocolate and wine to stay warm.
In the end we were extremely pleased and will most likely return to Wildwood in the Pines!
Thanks again Lorri
We met another couple at this inn for a wonderful winter holiday retreat. So relaxing- easy access to Lake Placid and other sites of interest. Kids had a great time in the loft- their own little space.
Clean, very accommodating, driveway was cleared and salted. Had everything we'd need in the kitchen- we made our own meals here and just relaxed in the woods.
Can't wait to go back in the summer for hiking season
We had another wonderful stay!!
The "cabin" was amazing. - it is a gorgeous 3 story house. - very secluded but a shorty drive to whiteface man and lake placid. My wife and I arrived on Christmas eve and everything was super clean. Also the only thing we needed to bring was food as all of the amenities were already there. We had a fire outside in the fire pit both days and went hiking on the Flume trail which is connected to Whiteface Mtn. We are looking forward to making this a yearly tradition but will certainly add at least one or two more nights. THANK YOU LORRI - Oh and BTW my wife wants to build your house where we live.
