We live in San Diego and love to hike. Owning a home in Idyllwild has been a dream since I first visited the mountain 18 years ago. The home is a dream! It is beautifully appointed, newly remodeled from top to bottom and enjoys lots of privacy and seclusion.

JOHN RINALDI purchased this lodge in 2012

Why JOHN RINALDI chose Inland Empire

The last owners remodeled the home with love and utilized many of the same materials used in my primary home like slate floors, the moment I walked in the home I knew this was the house!

What makes this lodge unique

I love views and being up high. The home features large decks in the front and in the back and is quiet and serene. It is a first class home with many fine touches. The unique wood carvings, the large lava rock fireplace reaching to the ceiling, the spa against the rocks, a backyard surrounded by granite rocks, all of these things captured my heart.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a very nice weekend! The cabin is amazing. All of the amenities needed were here and more. We loved the game room and hot tub! We hope to visit again next year!

I visit Idyllwild yearly or more ever since I attended college in San Diego. Over the years, I stayed at local inns, and vacation rentals. This year I sought something special and wanted a cabin that seemed both like a cabin with privacy but with upscale amenities. I chose Eagle Rest as it listed all the amenities I sought and offered an easy walk to town.

I arrived to find a bottle of wine from the owner welcoming me and an impeccably appointed and very clean cabin. I read a few reviews of previous guests which picked at silly things. Yes, you climb a lot of stairs, it is a cabin perched on the mountainside and the steps get you away from the world and the cabin is a peaceful oasis in the treetops. The owner stresses the stairs and one of the first pics is of the stairs, so how do you then complain about stairs in a review?

The cabin offers WIFI, Apple TV, a jacuzzi in the rocks, a pool table, a nicer kitchen than at my own home, comfortable beds and linens I would expect to find at the Kimpton Hotel. My doggie loved the place, the owner already had dog beds, bowls, and blankets for my furry companion. I loved reading on any of the 4 decks and sipping a glass of wine at night watching the amazing stars which are not disturbed by needless light.

In short, everything about the cabin was excellent and first rate. I will be returning. To the few other negative comments in reviews, everything worked, the grill was awesome and Hot, the Jacuzzi hot and all well maintained.

My advise on any home you rent in Idyllwild.. when you head to the mountains your not visiting a hotel, expect things to be more rustic, the yard around cabins are often natural not manicured, it lends to the mountain beauty.

You will not be disappointed with the Eagle Rest. In every way, the attentive owner and the cabin he clearly takes pride in, exceeded my expectations. A note, the owner advised me the rear deck is about to be replaced, it was functional, just older, and in no way detracted from my stay.

Good for family and friends

  • 3 of 5

Friends and family of 6 adults, 2 kids, and 2 dogs - we spent Memorial day weekend at the Lodge. The house was big enough for all of us, we could have fit 2 more people if we wanted to HOWEVER there is no privacy in the house... The ONLY private room is the one downstairs, all others are opened, even the master bedroom! My daughter and her friend took the mattress on the loft and totally unexpectedly peeked into our bedroom.

Kitchen really has everything you need and it comes from someone who cooks and bakes a lot. We did NOT go out to eat the whole weekend, prepared everything in the nice, very modern kitchen. Unfortunately the BBQ didn't seem to work, first we had to fill up the gas, then it still took more than an hour to make it work. Luckily we had 2 very resourceful man with us so they made it work however the regulator needs to be changed on it for it work well.

Backyard was not taken care of as I expected from the pictures however it was still great to have the nature (huge rocks and trees) right by the bedroom door.

Jacuzzi looked awesome in the backyard but it wasn't clean and it didn't warm up good enough even after an hour of waiting.

Game room was super with a bar and a pool (billiard) table, games and even a popcorn machine :-)

Some of us didn't leave the Lodge the whole weekend, just relaxed or played games and some of us went for hiking.

Dogs - had bowls, blankets for the dogs however the place is NOT fenced in a 100% so we could not let the dogs out to the backyard without heavy supervision and believe me....the dogs wanted to be outside in the nature, exploring soooooo much they didn't even let us sleep. lol.

Overall, we had a great weekend.

Owner's Response: I am glad you enjoyed your weekend. While I appreciate the time it took to write your review, I never quite understand the point of listing things in a review like the privacy or bedroom layout in a derogatory fashion. I am very clear about the layout throughout the listing. I do not provide propane as indicated in the listing and in the welcome package as I have not found any easy way to ensure guests turn it off. The grill however works fine, I just used it. The Jacuzzi is cleaned weekly, and heats to 101 promptly. It is lowered to conserve energy and assist us in saving the environment and to keep our prices low, also detailed in the welcome package. Also just tested that. The yard is NOT 100% fenced nature and the boulders make that impossible also detailed in the listing and the welcome package. Finally, I am very proud of my home but never claim it to be something it is not. I spent a lot of time detailing the listing to ensure it is the right fit and I spend a lot of time providing an amazing experience, thus the many many 5 star reviews. I might suggest before your next rental you spend a bit more time reading the listing detail and the VERY detailed welcome package you were provided. Thanks for your stay.

Delightful mountain retreat

  • 5 of 5

Lovely "cabin" with two large decks, perfect for relaxing and soaking in the gorgeous view. Hottub, fireplace, games, pool table, popcorn maker: everything you could want for a mountain getaway. Worked well for two couples, additional loft area would work well for kids.

Great Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Wow! What an amazing place! We enjoyed every aspect of this home! Great entertainment for all with the spa, pool table, card games, board games, dart board, and a wet bar with wine fridge! AMAZING! The beds were super comfy and cozy! The kitchen had everything you needed to prepare meals too. We highly recommend Eagle Rest and will be back soon!

Needs improvements

  • 3 of 5

Hot Water: The worst part of the cabin is the lack of any hot water. We were only be able to get about 30 seconds of hot water before it would go back to freezing. Then we would turn it off for a min and get another 30 seconds of hot water. We contacted the owner the first day in the cabin and did not hear back from him until the next afternoon. He had several suggestions for fixing the issue but none of the options made improvements in the inconsistency of hot water.

Safety: The listing boasts of upgrades throughout the cabin, but it is a little run down. The kitchen does have nice countertops and looks more modern, but the oven did not stay at temperature and it took 3 hours to cook a pan of lasagna. The deck out back has multiple places were the wood is missing or unstable/broken. The backyard stairs have rebar sticking straight out so watch your step. The upstairs railing is not secure or to code by any means and is dangerous. If you have little children, they can easily fall through all the railings out on the balconies and upstairs because the space between the bars was roughly 10 inches wide on the upstairs railing and more than a foot on the outdoor balconies. Another concerning find was a shot gun shell in the downstairs bedroom. One of our children found it and made us worry if there were guns in the house. A bit unnerving with children running around.

Parking: There is really only one very small parking spot during the winter. If you are visiting during the snow, you cannot park on the street, and the other mentioned parking spot above the property is not suited for parking in the snow as it is too steep.

Pets: I wish we were forewarned about how many pets have been in this cabin. Our friend is highly allergic and was miserable the whole time. It really needs a good clean as there was pet hair on everything including blankets and they left the pet food/water bowls out in the kitchen and upstairs area.

Bedding: We did not find any bedding or blankets for the futon. There were not enough blankets for everyone.

The cabin is in a good area with great views! The pool table and additional games were great! Fully stocked kitchen with any pots/pans/dishes you’d need. We had no issues with the Jacuzzi and it was heated when we arrived. Found a good supply of fire wood up the backyard stairs. The couch was a great size and fits lots of people. Overall I do not see us staying here again.

Owner's Response: While I appreciate your review my experience as a vacation home owner is some people cannot be made happy or don't read the listing then complain later. In a mountain home, things occasionally don't often work as they do in the city. Unfortunately, the distance of the cabin from the propane tank and the altitude can trigger a fault in the water heater needed to be reset by the push of a button, every guest is given my cell phone prior to check in, a quick 2 second call would have solved the problem and given you endless hot water. Of the 100's of guests everyone else had ton's of hot water and it rarely needs to be reset. The home is quite safe, and the railings were up to code when the home was built. I suggest in the listing the home may not be the perfect place for small children especially with inattentive parents. I apologize if you found a shotgun shell, that mystifies me, there are no guns in the home nor may guns be fired in Idyllwild or the forest thus, I am at a loss as to where that may have been found. The welcome package details where to park if there is snow and the guest rental agreement WARNS you prior to booking, only book in the winter if you are prepared to deal with snow with proper vehicles and chains. The home is pet friendly, and always impeccable cleaned before a guest's arrival. Again, I list the pet friendliness in the review, so either your " highly allergic" friend cannot read or simply lacks the common sense to not rent a home or hotel that offers pet friendly accommodations. We offer a ton of extra bedding, including bedding for the futon. The location of the extra bedding is detailed in the welcome package. I love our guests, many of them stay multiple times, one guest even stocked the kitchen with a crockpot so that it is there for her use as she returns often. I appreciate honest criticism and constructive suggestions or feedback. However, I cannot stand whiny reviews that demonstrate little other than the reviewer failed to read the listing prior to booking, failed to call for help during the stay or did not read the welcome package ( an 8 page package) which would have ensured a better stay. Thus, I appreciate " you do not see staying here again" as you are the type of guest I really do not want to visit.

High end getaway.

  • 4 of 5

Overall our group was impressed with the property. It's modern inside but still rustic. The appliances were new and the kitchen was well stocked with pots pans and what have you. Also there is a grill really nice grill outside (but needs to be cleaned out as it seems from the ash that there have been quite a few bbqs before us) There is a TV with HDMI inputs and they actually had a 3rd gen Apple TV though we had brought our own. Wifi worked well and we were able to stream fine. The fireplace works fine but you should definitely either brig your own or contact the owner to ensure ample dry wood as we had only a few pieces and ended up drying wood we found out back (wet from snow) overnight by the small fire we were able to get going. Bring more sheets and blankets with you in case you need them as they are limited. Hot water takes a while to heat up but once it does you'll be good.

As stated in other reviews, there are a lot of steps and prepare to get out of breath especially if you have to make 5-6 trips.

Overall we'd rent it again!
