About JOHN RINALDI

We live in San Diego and love to hike. Owning a home in Idyllwild has been a dream since I first visited the mountain 18 years ago. The home is a dream! It is beautifully appointed, newly remodeled from top to bottom and enjoys lots of privacy and seclusion.

JOHN RINALDI purchased this lodge in 2012

Why JOHN RINALDI chose Inland Empire

The last owners remodeled the home with love and utilized many of the same materials used in my primary home like slate floors, the moment I walked in the home I knew this was the house!

What makes this lodge unique

I love views and being up high. The home features large decks in the front and in the back and is quiet and serene. It is a first class home with many fine touches. The unique wood carvings, the large lava rock fireplace reaching to the ceiling, the spa against the rocks, a backyard surrounded by granite rocks, all of these things captured my heart.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a very nice weekend! The cabin is amazing. All of the amenities needed were here and more. We loved the game room and hot tub! We hope to visit again next year!

Perfect weekend getaway

  • 5 of 5

The minute I arrived at Eagle Rest Lodge, I was so impressed. The photos look beautiful, but they don't even do the home justice. That tells you something.

I went with 5 other people, all couples all in their mid twenties to mid thirties. We all live in Los Angeles and wanted a snowy getaway without committing to overcrowded and pricy Big Bear. It was the perfect setup, one couple was delighted to take the loft (basically a cozy, grown up fort) and the other two rooms had plenty of space, bathroom space was also definitely not an issue.

Some great features:

-So many areas to see gorgeous views! There's a wet bar upstairs with a pool table, popcorn machine and darts and the back yard with hot tub is directly outside that area. Then theres another couple areas as well that would be perfect to sit outside and have breakfast or read a book with view of the mountains.

-People spoke highly of the kitchen and theres a reason. There's plenty of space for cooking and just open space in general. You can tell this guy made sure everything was top quality.

-The hot tub. So crucial. You'd be surprised by how many hot tubs are advertised for rentals but don't actually heat up at all. *A helpful hint: make sure it doesn't go into Eco mode. All of a sudden the hot tub stopped heating. Once we realized that mode was the problem, we temporarily switched if off and it stayed at a delightful 100 degrees with no problems. There is no greater combination than hot tubs and snow.

-Great customer service. I wanted to find out if we could do a late checkout and it was no problem, we were able to leave at 2 pm which allowed for a relaxing morning.

Honestly, every issue I saw on the reviews I didn't find to be a problem/it was very clearly stated. I had no issues with the cleanliness and I would expect to bring logs and other necessary needs for the fireplace. Just pick it up at Home Depot before you arrive to save you some costs from the nearby grocery store. Yes, the bedroom sun roof is bright. That's in the description, not a surprise. To those who complained about dog hair: Its stated multiple times that this cabin is dog friendly. As a dog owner myself, you can't get every speck of fur out of every crevice of a two story house. It's just not realistic.

I probably sound like a paid advertiser, but this really is such an amazing home to stay at. I've started doing annual trips to Idyllwild and I can't see any reason to not return to this lodge every year.

Cool cabin with good management.

Everything was clean and ready for us. A couple questions came up and John was helpful right away. I recommend this cabin to anyone looking for a getaway.

Great Getaway

  • 4 of 5

I just wanted a few days without work and kids for my hubby and I; an escape from our normal routine. Idyllwild was beautiful. This cabin has everything - no reason to leave unless we wanted to. The kitchen is amazing!! The kitchen is filled with the best of the best. The game room was fun & entertaining and the Jacuzzi was ready for use. The housekeeping needs to be improved and this is the only reason I give 4 stars instead of 5 stars. The firewood bin was empty, the matches were also empty; we arrived at night and the outside lights should have been left on - Thank God we had a flashlight. All of the hand soap pumps empty - later found the large costco refill of softsoap under one of the bathroom sinks (owner is providing the tools and the housekeeping is failing). Maybe a checklist for the housekeeper would be helpful for new arriving guests; I expect more than clean down the middle. The owner is welcome to contact me for more details but I don't want the issue of housekeeping to keep anyone from renting this amazing home. Just be prepared to bring your own wood, matches and a flashlight. We went into town and purchased wood and matches (if I had known I could have brought some of the wood from home - I just purchased a cord of wood). We contacted the owner for instructions about the endless hot water tank, he was responsive and matter resolved. All in all the weekend was relaxing and we truly enjoyed our stay at this rental. Highly recommend and hoping to return soon.

Suggestion: I am not new to VRBO and have seen many rentals with a basic 3 ring binder with sheet protectors for instructions and local things to do (menus, tours, etc.). The instructions for the hot water heater and anything else special for the rental (pictures of the how to). There is usually a statement on the first page that if the book should disappear there will be a fee.

Fun Stay at Eagle's Rest Lodge

  • 4 of 5

We had a nice time at Eagle's Rest Lodge. It was very clean inside. John was very responsive to our questions once we got there. It has a beautiful view. We had fun playing pool and also playing games on the table by the fireplace. It is close to town. The kitchen seemed to be the most updated part of the lodge and therefore was the nicest with great appliances. Everything was as explained on the website. Though we were aware that the loft, futon area and upper bedroom were open to each other, it is worth noting that it does transmit the sounds from downstairs, the game room and all those bedrooms together so if others are staying up later it is hard to sleep. Just good to be aware. Overall a nice place probably would have enjoyed the outside terraces so much more in the summer.

Enjoyable stay with a group

  • 4 of 5

Overall, our group of five people + dogs had a great time. The location was very picturesque, with a good view of sunrise and moonrise from upstairs patio, nice (almost completely) fenced in rocky area for the dogs to explore. Pool table, hot tub, and wifi were nice amenities.

There were a couple things which we thought could be improved upon: we weren't able to figure out how to work some of the appliances (e.g. couldn't change the washer to any setting but the 6 minute spin cycle, dryer didn't fully dry even a single towel after 3 cycles, had issues getting coffee maker to work) and the shower water periodically and unpredictably turns cold but then warms up again several times during a 10-15 minute shower. Spiral staircase could potentially be a problem for children as the steps are somewhat slippery.

This was not an issue for us, but as a note, the studio bedroom with futon and loft bedroom are both immediately next to the upstairs bedroom, and the door/walls enclosing the bedroom do not extend to the ceiling, so could be a bit noisy if planning to have the place at full capacity.

Excellent cabin, amazing views, privacy, easily the best value on the Mountain.

  • 5 of 5

I visit Idyllwild yearly or more ever since I attended college in San Diego. Over the years, I stayed at local inns, and vacation rentals. This year I sought something special and wanted a cabin that seemed both like a cabin with privacy but with upscale amenities. I chose Eagle Rest as it listed all the amenities I sought and offered an easy walk to town.

I arrived to find a bottle of wine from the owner welcoming me and an impeccably appointed and very clean cabin. I read a few reviews of previous guests which picked at silly things. Yes, you climb a lot of stairs, it is a cabin perched on the mountainside and the steps get you away from the world and the cabin is a peaceful oasis in the treetops. The owner stresses the stairs and one of the first pics is of the stairs, so how do you then complain about stairs in a review?

The cabin offers WIFI, Apple TV, a jacuzzi in the rocks, a pool table, a nicer kitchen than at my own home, comfortable beds and linens I would expect to find at the Kimpton Hotel. My doggie loved the place, the owner already had dog beds, bowls, and blankets for my furry companion. I loved reading on any of the 4 decks and sipping a glass of wine at night watching the amazing stars which are not disturbed by needless light.

In short, everything about the cabin was excellent and first rate. I will be returning. To the few other negative comments in reviews, everything worked, the grill was awesome and Hot, the Jacuzzi hot and all well maintained.

My advise on any home you rent in Idyllwild.. when you head to the mountains your not visiting a hotel, expect things to be more rustic, the yard around cabins are often natural not manicured, it lends to the mountain beauty.

You will not be disappointed with the Eagle Rest. In every way, the attentive owner and the cabin he clearly takes pride in, exceeded my expectations. A note, the owner advised me the rear deck is about to be replaced, it was functional, just older, and in no way detracted from my stay.
