There is something special about the Northwoods and something extra special about a Northwoods lake and something really extra special about Little Trout Lake. This secluded property offers 'memorable moments' to call upon whenever everyday life needs an uplift.

JAN RETZLAFF purchased this cottage in 1973

Why JAN RETZLAFF chose Manitowish Waters

Where else could anyone find a thousand-plus acre lake with only two cottages on it?....a rare and unspoiled

get-away. Nature at its best. Short drive to Powell Marsh Bird Sanctuary and Wildlife Area and adjacent to an operating cranberrry marsh. Only minutes to Boulder Junction, Manitowish Waters, Sayner, Woodruff and Minocqua.

What makes this cottage unique

Being here at Little Trout Lake is like being the only person(s) in the world. The only neighbor is the owner who is far enough away to be unseen and unheard...And close enough if needed. The cottage's vintage character is cozy and homey and draws you into its' relaxed comfort.

Absolutely loved our stay at this cottage!

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is a gem!! A hidden jewel in a beautiful setting! We thoroughly enjoyed your stay, and especially loved the sunsets and the rising of the moon in the evenings as we looked out over the lake! We saw eagles, osprey, loons, cranes and other wildlife in the area. The cottage is quaint, cozy and beautifully decorated. It has everything you need and the owner is especially nice. Very peaceful and calming place. Great place to reflect and enjoy nature! Thank you Jan!! We loved it! Susie and Lisa! :-)

Charming Private Retreat Treat!

  • 5 of 5

My husband, originally from Wisconsin, has wonderful childhood memories visiting his great uncle’s cranberry marsh in Manitowish Waters on the shores of Little Trout Lake. He also vividly remembered a tiny lone cottage on the lake and many years later, to his surprise, discovered the same cottage on VRBO for rent. We live in NC, usually vacationing in the Florida Keys and thought this would be a fun change and a perfect destination for him to spend some quality time with his mother and revisit the place that held so many wonderful childhood memories for their family. As a southerner, I had never been so far north and certainly had never seen a cranberry bog, so I was just as excited for a new adventure and some much needed quiet and relaxation. The little cottage is the perfect setting for a quiet retreat. Every day was just a bit different. On breezy days we could hear the tiny waves wash ashore in a hypnotic rhythm. When the days were calm, the water was like glass and all we heard was an occasional loon or duck. We enjoyed the canoe and fishing (mostly cruising) in the small motor boat almost every day. We walked the bogs in the mornings and captured photographs of the beautiful (tall as me) Sandhill Cranes. We enjoyed seeing the plump cranberries growing all around us since they were almost ready for harvest. There is a local gift shop in the area where we got a crash course in harvest-time at the bogs and we all enjoyed the cranberry salsa we purchased there. We also enjoyed making homemade cranberry cocktails every night at sunset either on the porch or by the fire complete with s'mores (marshmallow toasting sticks are provided). Breathtaking sunsets and the stars are so bright! One night the lake was so calm we stood at the end of the pier and could see a mirror image of the stars reflecting in the water as if we were in a starry globe. Stunning! We had one of the best "fish fry" dinners at Aberdeen Lodge (and that is saying a lot considering I am from the south where we fry everything). There were days we felt like we were living in the pages of a magazine. Imperfectly Perfect! Jan is a wonderful host and has created a very special haven. As a parting gift we were lucky to receive homegrown tomatoes from her garden. Delicious! Jan, it was a pleasure meeting you and hope you can visit our little tropical vrbo getaway, (No Bananas Bungalow) one day! Thanks again! We look forward to staying at your charming cottage again in the future!

My Golden Pond!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent 5 wonderful days here. Its such a quiet, beautiful getaway. The owner is wonderful and had everything we needed.I couldn't get enough of the view and the beautiful birds, especially the loons. The cottage is adorable and very clean.Ive never been so close to the water before, literally 5 feet from the porch! The water was crystal clear and you could walk for a very long time before it was deep.We loved learning about the cranberry bogs that were right in back of the property. At night the stars felt like they were a foot above my head, just beautiful,.We will be back ! I give this property and owner a AAA+

Better than described!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second year spending our vacation at Little Trout Lake. We've decided to make it an annual event. The cottage is exactly as described, although the pictures don't seem to do it justice. They're missing the wonderful breezes, loon calls and gentle waves of the lake. The lake is so clear I could see my toes when standing in water up to my neck. Jan has equipped the cabin with everything you could possibly need! We were so content relaxing, swimming and reading that we only left the cottage once the entire week, to make a quick grocery run. I believe we may have heard drumming from the nearby reservation one evening. We had almost daily eagle sightings. As my 19 year old daughter said, "Mom, it's magical!". We can't wait to go back again. Thanks so much Jan for such a wonderful experience....two years in a row!!

With only two cottages on this 1,000+ acre lake, here is your rare opportunity for a soothing refuge in an otherwise stressful life...Step back in time at Little Trout Lake and relax, restore and revitalize at this lakeside cottage (actually only a few steps from the waters' edge.) Have fun feeding the ducks, watch the stunning sunsets (or approaching rain), listen to the music of loons calling, and smell the pines and fresh air.,,play in the water, explore in a boat, or loll in a hammock. So much to do, or not!

Sparsely inhabited (only two dwellings on the entire lake), there is little need to share the clear water and unspoiled shoreline...a wonderful opportunity for swimming, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, fishing, photography, painting, reading, writing and so much more. Nearby are small communities, boutique shopping, golf courses, rustic biking, hiking roads, fine restaurants and casino.

AND the cottage kitchen is well-stocked with equipment to allow in-kitchen or outside picnic eating. Charcoal grill, redwood chairs and hammock are located under-the-pines on grassy shaded shoreline area. Four Adirondack chairs and stone firepit are lakeside. Additionally, the cottage deck offers a small table and chairs overlooking the lake... a perfect spot to observe hummingbirds, loons, eagles, ospreys and other wildlife.

Bring your binoculars to watch ducks, eagles, loons, osprey, deer, otters, fox and whoever else should come along. This is also a great place to watch clouds, stars, rainstorms and lightning. If things get too exciting (or wet), then a retreat to the enclosed porch will provide an equally fine observation area.

Our quiet and private Vilas County cottage (only 12' from the waters' edge) is home to a long, sugar-sand private beach, perfect swimming areas and deep fishing holes. In spite of its name, Little Trout Lake is not small...its over 1,000 acres of water. A kayak, canoe and rowboat are available for a small fee upon request. A 14' motorboat, 15 hp motor and gas can be rented on premises for $185/week or $40/day.

The cottage was built by a railroad executive for himself and his family at the time the railroad was first extended to the Northwoods. No roads to the site were available and all materials were delivered on sleds pulled by horses across the lake on the ice during the winter time. It has been very well-maintained by its subsequent owners and retains its vintage character.

Here are a few comments from recent visitors: adventure to get here and the reward is a little bit of heaven...I love this place....Last night was so quiet, I think I heard the stars shining....I saw a young deer come on down to the shoreline for a sip.... The water is incredibly clean and clear....I brought my favorite authors along and haven't thought to visit with them yet...It can't be time to leave yet, is it? I don't want to to go home....
