About the property

Condo, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible Bed, 2.5+ baths (sleeps 4-6)

Our beautiful condo is located in the Makahuena Resort Complex. Our unit is 1200 sq ft, two story (top two floors), two and a half bath and is newly refurbished with great views and the sounds of the ocean from the condo and the lanai. The kitchen has new cabinets, granite tile counters and new appliances. This townhome features two master suites with private baths. Each bathroom has new cabinets and countertops and sinks.

The living room quickly converts to a nice bedroom with a brand new comfortable sofa bed, blinds and a half bath. There is a new flat screen TV with cable and DVD player in the living room. There are also TV's in each master with cable as well. Free broadband internet access with free Wifi is included with this condo.

Our condo is situated just yards from the water on the top two levels of the complex. This offers the best views with no other units on top of you for noise control. The Grand Hyatt Hotel and Poipu Bay Golf Course is 3/4 mile away. The Sheraton Hotel and Mariott Waiohai Beach Club is about one mile in the other direction. The complex includes a large tile lined pool and spa and a nice lighted tennis court. There is a large bar-be-que pavilion with 2 gas barbecues for guests to use.

The world famous Poipu beach, which has great snorkeling and surfing is within walking distance in one direction and Ship Wreck Beach at the Grand Hyatt Resort is a short walk in the other direction. From the Makahuena Point viewing area, which is located in the complex, you get the unique experience of viewing breathtaking sunrises and sunsets from the exact same viewing spot in the same day!

During the months of November through April, you will have one of the best viewing areas on the island to see whales from the lanai and from the Makaheuna point, also all year long you can see numerous turtles and dolphin pods.

This condo is special to us as its our second home on the island of which we got married!

About Sean Whisler

Kristy and I had visited the island six times in the last five years and decided that since we got married here, we wanted to buy a second home here to enjoy and cherish this island and what it has to offer for many, many years!

Sean Whisler purchased this condo in 2012

Why Sean Whisler chose Kauai

We happened along this property via VRBO and fell in love with the smaller complex and quietness of the resort. The location was optimal for us as we love the sun and the beaches here in Poipu get sun all year long with very minimal rainy days.

We also love this property due to the expansive ocean views with nothing between us and the ocean and its sounds!

It also helps that this property is literally about one half mile from the very beach we got married on!!

What makes this condo unique

The benefits of this property is location to Lihue to go into town for any items that you forgot but still be 'away' from the city to enjoy 'island' time at all the quaint, local shops and restaurants that Poipu and its surrounding communities has to offer. All literally within a few miles of each other!

Great Place to Stay on Kauai

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at 1306 Makahuena March 30 - April 7, 2017. It was a great place to stay! It had 2 king size beds with full bathrooms attached. The master bedroom had a view of the ocean, so we could hear the waves crashing as we went to sleep at night which was very relaxing. There were a couple nights where people were violating the quiet hours policy and enjoying the pool rather loudly, but other than that the sleeping arrangements were great for the adults.

The kid's bedroom was a little noisier, specifically with the swarms of birds that seemed to enjoy the trees outside their windows. But the kids seemed to have no problems falling / staying asleep.

The kitchen was well stocked with pots, pans, tupperware, and everything needed to make a few meals (nice, since you can expect to spend $50+ for meals for a family of four pretty much everywhere you eat on Kauai). My only complaint there was that there was no salt.

The lanai was really nice. We ate our breakfasts out there and would sit there looking for whales (we didn't really see any from the lanai; they seemed to like the east side of the island a bit more while we were there).

Location was great - you were at most 1 hour from anywhere you wanted to go (west or north) on the island. It was a great "home base" for exploring.

They had beach chairs, umbrellas, floats, tennis rackets and balls, sunscreen, bug spray (we bought a whole can and left it, but you probably won't need it) and boogie boards for your use. They actually had 4 boogie boards, but they weren't necessarily in the best condition, one was foam for a little kid, and 2 others had the wrist strap broken off and were kinda dented. I'm blaming the poor condition of these as my excuse for why I couldn't seem to catch a wave, anyway. :)

My only complaint in general would be that with the policy of keeping the doors and windows shut while you're away made the place rather hot in the evenings. They had plenty of fans that you could position to get the breeze flowing through and get it cooled relatively quickly. But it would have been nice to leave the lanai open for the day (it was on the 3rd floor, so no worries about anyone breaking in, and the overhang would have prevented any water from entering except maybe in a very heavy wind).

Running out of space for the review so a couple quick summaries: no real issue with construction noise, no roaches (our friends at Poipu Sands had an issue with those), BBQ grills are nice, great hosts!

A perfect stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at Makahuena 1306. We loved seeing whale spouts and dolphins while we cooked in the kitchen or enjoyed ourselves on the lanai. The condo had everything we needed, and it is clean and well cared for. The bed in the oceanside master is very comfortable. We would recommend this place to anyone.

Comfortable, nicely appointed third floor unit with ocean view serves as convenient base to explore the island or just stay and relax. Good restaurants, stores nearby. Owners provide a notebook of helpful local information. Would return in a heartbeat.

Enjoyed our stay.

  • 3 of 5

Overall my wife and I found this unit to be fairly nice for our 10 day stay. We found the unit to be clean upon arrival. The unit is nicely appointed (artwork, furniture) with a fully equipped kitchen. It also has beach chairs, coolers and a boogie board for use. Being open to a central courtyard/pool we found that you could hear just about everything that was going on around you. Some tenants/owners did party well pass the 9:00 quiet time. The unit does have a decent view of the water with a great location on the sunny south side of Kauai. In-spite of the recent renovations the unit does show its age in certain areas due to the lack of proper maintenance. Example: all windows on the west side, caulking on bathroom fixtures and all chrome fixtures had hard water crust on them. Fussy me.

One last note. A lesson to myself and all renters. Before you put down that deposit ask the owner or the management company if there is any construction going on nearby. This condo complex has a brand new complex being built right next door. At 7:00 am sharp the jack hammers, heavy equipment noise and the beep beep beep of vehicles backing up lasted all day.

Owner's Response: Scott, Hope you guys got to enjoy the island. Sorry about the construction noise. We were unaware that they had started. That vacant lot has been that way since 1992 and we were under the impression that there was a moratorium that nothing was to be built ocean side at all on the entire island. Salt water in the air is pretty tough to deal with on a daily basis, however at $700+ a/night for a non-ocean view stay at the Grand Hyatt or Sheraton, I am sure they can monetarily deal with that on a daily basis. Depending on the trade wind direction, they also experience the same construction noise that is present there also. The vacant lot next door is going to be 10 lots for single story homes at a premium and thankfully not another complex. Sorry for the construction noise and the pool noise. That will be addressed immediately as it is our complex managers' duty to take care of those issues. We hope you enjoyed the island and we would love to have you guys back and we are in the process of updating over the next several months. We offer a nice discount for returnees. Sincerely Sean & Kristy

We enjoyed 10 great days at the Makahuena. We saw spectacular sunrises, sunsets and the full moon setting in the early morning. It is an easy walk to either Poipu Beach or Shipwreck Beach. The condo is super comfortable. The bed and more importantly the pillows allowed for a restful night sleep. You can hear the waves crashing on the rocks ....It was heaven. We had a minor problem with the microwave that was taken care of promptly. We had a car so we had many highlights. The Wednesday Kauai Culinary Market, Friday Art Walk in Hanapepe with the Swinging Brigde, hiking in Wimea canyon, swimming in a pool at the base of a waterfall, Kilauea lighthouse, Skyline Eco Adventures, Smith Family Luau, Princeville, Kapaa, golf at Kukuiolono park (cheap and fun) and daily beach time for "hot sand therapy". I would not hesitate to book the same property in the future!
