2 bedroom gite set in 7 and a half acres of private meadow and woodland
About Tracy Moore
My name is Tracy and I moved here in February 2016 with my husband, Rob, to follow our dream of living a life that is more about living and less about the 'rat race'. I was a primary school teacher and assistant headteacher and was frustrated with working from dawn 'til bed-time with no time to enjoy life and family; Rob was an HGV2 driver who was fed up spending all his time in tailbacks. I am passionate about nature and my vision is to make Les Bardeaux into a haven for wildlife and share it with people who feel the same way. I am very social and friendly and love to meet new people, so running a gite in the Dordogne was ideal for us. We have travelled to many countries in the past and hope that we can incorporate some of the things we loved and appreciated whilst travelling, to Les Bardeaux. We wanted to keep it small and intimate - a place where families/couples can have all the space and facilities to themselves. A real rural retreat. Rob had always had a passion for bird-watching, which came from his Dad. He was beginning to develop an interest in moths (his Dad is extremely knowledgeable on this topic and was the moth expert and adviser for Martin on 'Springwatch' 2016) and butterflies, and because of this we have a moth-trap and a butterfly net, which guests are very welcome to use. Very sadly, Rob died in an accident, but I am determined to continue his legacy. I also have a love for bird-watching (from both my Dad and step-dad), and am trying to learn more about the local butterflies, flowers, animals and foraging in the local area. I have a real passion for all nature. I love walking and am the best person to ask about local walks, as I take Molly and Diesel, my spaniels, for miles every day. I am really interested in trying to become more and more self-sufficient, hence the foraging, the vegetable/fruit garden and the hens. If I had my way, I would fill the grounds with a menagerie of animals!

Why Tracy Moore chose Abjat-sur-Bandiat
We both love France, in particular the Perigord Vert region of the Dordogne, because it is less busy and touristy and, in our opinion, more lush and beautiful. We used to love our caravanning holidays in the Dordogne. Everything is easy to get to and close by: you don't have to exhaust yourself driving for hours to see places, which we've done in the past on holidays. The weather is a huge plus, as the summers are long, and lovely and hot. One momentous day (over a bottle of red wine) we decided that we would do it - start 'living the dream' and living life. Les Bardeaux was the very first house we looked at and we fell in love with it. We looked at another 30 properties, but nothing matched up to it. It had everything we wanted for our gite business: a high quality gite, which was ideal as a luxurious rural retreat; lots of land, including beautiful woodland; close to lots of attractions and stunning places to visit nearby; a nearby village with handy amenities, such as a boulangerie/patisserie; lots of fantastic walks on our doorstep; and quiet and peaceful!
What makes this Cottage unique
We hope that Les Bardeaux and its gite reflect a true love of nature and that our guests enjoy it as much as we do. We are trying to be as eco-friendly as we can: hence the wood-fired hot-tub and natural swimming pool. We have designed the pool so that it is family-friendly, with a shallow paddling area for very young children. The hot-tub is absolutely fantastic - it's such a natural experience and there is nothing so lovely as relaxing in it, gazing up at the stars (which can be incredible out here), surrounded by solar fairy lights and candle-light. The hammock chairs, by the hot-tub and in the woods, are so relaxing and comfortable: it is easy to lose a few hours chilling out with a good book. Our woods and meadows are ideal for a dog-friendly get-away and there are so many walks right on our door-step for you and your dog to enjoy. We want to make guests feel like this is a home from home. We also grow our own organic fruit and vegetables as well has keeping hens for lovely fresh eggs, and Tracy makes her own jams, pickles and chutneys. Whenever possible we offer our produce to our guests to buy.
100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
A wonderful place to unwind and relax, but plenty to do if you want to
We had the most amazing time here and already plan to return. The owner is absolutely fab; she's there if you need her but, if you want your privacy, you've got it; I can't sing her praises enough.
The property is perfect; not too big, not too small. Clean and tidy, and well furnished. Location is good; the end property in a small hamlet, so very quiet. The owner provides info for you for inspiration if you're wondering what you should or could do in the area, inc. local makets which are great.
The garden is huge and includes a wood; ideal for naturewalks. There's plenty of sunbeds and a hammock for lying back and putting your feet up with local beer or glass of wine.
The natural pool is absolutely the highlight of the property; ok, so you need to brave the temparature in September but, I've never experienced anything quite like it. Safe, secure, swimming with nature all around you; frogs, "jaws", dragonflies, damselflies, black carpenter bees that just ignore you as you swim by. I'm 43 and I was blown away; if you've got kids, this is a must! And, of course, there's the hot-tub which we didn't make enough use of during our stay.
Watch out for the woodpeckers throughout the day and the owls from dusk, and if lucky you'll see the dear that sometimes roam in the paddock at the end of the garden, in the evenings/mornings.
There's plenty to see and do within an hours drive and, if willing to venture a little further for a day out, the castles and medievil towns of the Dordogne river valley are within reach.
There's plenty of good restaurants within say 40 minutes drive, including 4 or 5 which hold a Michelin Star.
There's nature aplenty; I've mentioned creatures we saw at the house; out and about, we got up close with Capybara, Storks and Cranes, Golden Eagles and Buzzards, and other birds of prey.
If there is a negative about the property it's that the nearest shops (boulangerie / supermarkets) are probably 10-15 minutes drive away - this wasn't a problem for us but, remember not to run out of milk or bread, or cheese, and most importantly booze, because you can't just step out your front door and get provisions! We understand there is a local bar and creperie within walking distance (perhaps 3 kms); we didn't actually attempt the walk ourselves.
We would definitely recommend this property; it has something for everyone, young and old. We hope you might enjoy the stay as much as we did.
We loved this property and all it had to offer, and the natural swimming pool was particularly delightful. It was a perfect, relaxing rural retreat and we could have stayed much longer. Tracy, the owner, was so helpful and friendly.
I’m so glad you enjoyed your time here. It was an absolute please to have you stay here with your lovely family. Wish you could have stayed longer too!
Peaceful and relaxing
Lovely gite in a small hamlet, surrounded by woodland and walks. Tracey, the owner was very helpful and friendly. The natural swimming pool was just beautiful. The local village has an artisan baker, a bar and a restaurant.
Delightfully quiet spot but not too far from anything u need
The owners have provided everything u would need and more.Fantastic condition clean and tidy, Tracy and Rob go out of their way to ensure you have a great time nothing is too much trouble. The natural pool is a fantastic new addition.
Absolutely fantastic guests! So friendly and lovely; they were a complete pleasure to have to stay. The care and consideration they took with the gite was wonderful. They left the gite spotless! We highly recommend them.
