About the property

4 Bedroom, 2 1/2 Bathroom On The Ocean

Our traditional Maine seaside cape house is on 6 Acres at the end of a peninsula overlooking the mouth of the Machias River on one side and Machias Bay on the other side. Originally built in 1832 as the house of Captain Benjamin Clark, this home has been expanded and fully updated and renovated over the years to provide now over 4000 sq. ft of comfortable living space. A retreat for easy living, the space is a perfect mix of tradition, charm and comfort.

This is the 5th year that we have rented the house with and so we have several reviews to share with you. The reviews assure you that this is a wonderful place to stay and you will want to return year after year.

Capturing 360 degrees of lovely views, if you look east and west , you will enjoy colorful sunrises over Machias Bay and fabulous sunsets over the river. During the day you can relax on the large deck overlooking the fields and the sea, walk the labyrinth spirit path on the point, pass by the final resting place of Captain Clark and his wife, the couple who originally built the house in 1832, or contemplate life while sitting on the teak bench under the shade of our massive maple tree. If you watch carefully you will see eagles and blue heron fly north along the shore and field edge every morning and see them return in the afternoon. In the yard you may enjoy croquet on the lawn, play shuffle board, or simply enjoy the gorgeous gardens and water view on three sides of the house.

Enjoy this large home featuring magnificent detail in its 'East Room', where you can listen to music, watch TV, play games or simply enjoy the spanning Ocean view before you. Upstairs over the East Room you will find the spacious fully skylit Master Bedroom with its own skylit bathroom. Watch the sunrise in the morning from your bed and dream under millions of stars at night as you look up and see the Milky Way. When was the last time you could see that in all its glory without any light pollution? Then wake up and see the romance of lobster boats and clammers on distant shores and plan on having some for your dinner.

Let your day unfold with breakfast in the Morning Room, the formal dining room, or on the deck. During the day or evening entertain yourselves or your guests with a game of pool on the professional sized pool table. Or sit quietly and write or paint and contemplate the beauty of the unspoiled old-world coast of Maine. The view has not changed much since the early 1800's. If you like to feast on a delicious spread of local organic food, move into the formal Dining Room where the large table easily seats 8 people. The large custom built kitchen is fully equipped to create any type of gourmet meal. Equipped with lobster pots to boil your lobster and the tools to open them!.. or steam your clams in a variety of sizes as well as an espresso maker; it’s a complete gourmet kitchen for you to enjoy.

The West Wing has 2 quaint bedrooms upstairs furnished with antiques and offering a ½ bath in between. One of the upstairs bedrooms has a double bed and the other two twin beds. Downstairs you will find another charming bedroom with a double bed, a full bathroom, a functioning wood paneled office, and a complete library offering lots of beautiful books, TV and/or music. Wireless internet is available throughout the house. A washer/dryer is available for your laundry. The available amenities and activities make this house a perfect location for a family reunion.

In the immediate vicinity, visit nearby Jasper Beach where you can walk a mile on unspoiled beach and search and find the semi-precious Jasper stones or stop at the working harbor at Bucks Harbor where you can buy fresh lobster at BBS. Or drive to the end of the road at Starboard (aka. Point of Maine). You can even go 'lobstering' with a local lobsterman in a nearby bay and witness the unique wonderful work of these hardy Downeasters and then take home the lobsters caught to make your own delicious lobster dinner to remember! Our 'Welcome Book' sent to you in advance of your stay tells you all about the details and how to reach and book our friendly local lobsterman and make other plans for wonderful day trips, even to Canada for the day!.

In nearby Machias you find stores offering organic foods and lots of choice local and regional foods and a full complement of restaurants. Helen’s Restaurant offers their world famous blueberry, strawberry and raspberry pie. The summer's offerings include the Machias Bay Chamber Concert Series featuring famous artists and ensembles weekly, hailing from California to New York. The Blueberry Festival held in August, and Margaretta Days (in June), which celebrates the first naval battle of the Revolutionary War fought in Machias Bay, bring people from all over the country to Machias.

Short trips to closeby attractions:

• Cutler fishing harbor: From here you can book a boat trip to Machias Seal Island to visit the Puffins and Arctic Terns in June and to mid-July.

• The stunning Bold Coast Hikes.

• Lubec : Features a charming fishing town and many nights of wonderful concerts offered by ‘Summer Keys’ that attract pianists, and other musicians from around the world.

• West Quoddy Head Lighthouse: The easternmost point in US offering a fantastic flat level hike with stunning views from the cliffs .

• Campobello Island: (in Canada, so bring passports!) Offering tours of Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s summer family cottage. And round out the day with a fun series of ferry rides as you island-hop around Passamaquoddy Bay.

• Eastport: A charming revitalized town and artist colony offering many galleries and lovely shops and a music festival every year.

• Saint Andrews (Canada): About 1.5 hours north is very worthwhile for shopping, golf, gardens and fine dining.

• Acadia National Park: A 2 hour drive south (if you don’t stop at the blueberry wineries along the way!). Be the first person in the US any day you are here to see the sun rise on top of Cadillac Mountain. Visit the charming towns of Bar Harbor (shopping), South West Harbor and North East Harbor.

Or simply relax and enjoy the peace, gardens and sea breezes from our beautiful deck at the Captain's House.

About Ann Gommers

My wife Ann and I and our family cherish this house and its beautiful surroundings. We have lived here full time for a number of years, but currently visit Machiasport in the 'off season'.

Ann Gommers purchased this house in 1962

Why Ann Gommers chose Downeast and Acadia

Our family has enjoyed this house and its unique location for many years. The view is unmatched. It's located at the end of the road so it is very quiet with a spectacular view from any room and all the best features in our gourmet kitchen very comfortable living and playing areas. .

What makes this house unique

The house is large, giving you lots of room. Tastefully decorated with a gourmet kitchen and three dining areas, including the large deck. There are stunning gardens that surround the house and 180 degree views of the water. The house has all the modern comforts, but gives you the rich sense of tradition and history. The ocean breezes keep the house cool and fresh providing a reprieve from the hot summers the East Coast has coped with the last number of years. Walk on our labyrinth too to enjoy a meditation walk!

Stunning!

  • 5 of 5

What a fantastic house on a fantastic piece of land with fantastic views! This house was perfect for our family. It is so much bigger than the pictures present. It was actually tiring walking from one side of the house to the other. (not a complaint) Every room was charming, interesting and spacious. I loved the Master bedroom...especially looking up at the Milky Way as I was falling asleep! The pool table was a great addition for entertainment. The deck was perfect for morning coffee, meals and star gazing with and without the telescopes. The land and views can't be described fairly in just a few words, so I won't even try. Walking the Spirit Path is a must when you visit! I think my sons walked down to the water's edge every single day. Some of the window cranks were broken, but we were able to manage as they were. I miss the house and Machaisport and Maine already! I am ready to come back!

Thank you Ann for sharing your house with us!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much Mary for your kind review! We are so happy that you enjoyed all that the house has to offer especially the "meditative "Spirit Path" that helps to encourage a different point of view, and the beautiful starlit nights when you can so clearly see the Milky Way and contemplate the Universe! Thank you too, for alerting us to the window cranks not working, and I have good news! They are all fixed! We hope that you will come to visit us again in the future! With warm regards, Annie

Unique, unforgettable property in a quiet, beautiful setting

  • 5 of 5

This is a special place that our family will surely never forget. We loved the house - it's history and character - but especially loved the surrounding property and beautiful sunrises. Machias is a quiet, small community - perfect for the relaxed vacation our family needed.

Owner's Response: We are so happy that you and your family so enjoyed your stay and found the needed peace that The Captain's House and its surroundings can provide! There are few places in the world that can offer the timelessness, history and beauty ..in a natural and peaceful, almost spiritual environment on the shore with all the comforts of home and no neighbors close enough to be heard...plus an awesome Farmer's Market with lots of local organics, baked goods and cheeses and all that you may need in the nearby village of Machias! Hope you took advantage of that! Or will the next time you come and visit!! Thank you for the kind review. We enjoyed having you as our guests.

Wonderful week!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I had an absolutely wonderful week at the historic Captain's House in Machiasport. This sprawling residence is full of character and charm, spotlessly clean and very comfortably furnished. Likewise, it had every amenity needed for cooking, an excellent sound system and music library as well as two flat screen TV's if one wished to catch up on the news, weather or watch a movie or show. Frankly though, the waterfront location, large rolling landscape and spectacular views trumped TV most every time.

The location lends itself to visits to nearby towns and fishing vllages. We made easy day trips up to Eastport and Lubec and even into Canada where we stopped in to see FDR's summer home in Campobello and the quaint seaside village of Saint Andrews. Don't forget your passports. Whale watching opportunities are readily available; we went twice and saw approximately a dozen whales as well as Bald eagles, seals and harbor porpoises. Loved every minute of it. And, you've got to try the blueberry pie at Helen's restaurant in town. Food's great, but the pies are incredible!

It was a pleasure working with Ann the owner who was so warm and welcoming. We are frequent Homeaway/VRBO clients in Maine and all over the country, and this was one of our very best stays. Wouldn't change a thing!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for visiting The Captain's House and your kind review. We are so happy that you have found the same joys and activities that we also appreciate in Downeast Maine. We hope you will come to visit again as there is always more to do and see!!!! Consider the Spring as the gardens and new life emerge after winter and in the fall when the blueberry fields turn into a stunning canvas of chartreuse, orange and burgundy and the maple, birch and oak trees are full of candy store colors....its warm and crisp through Thanksgiving! Thank you for your kind review!

Really, really loved being here!

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a place along the ocean where we could relax, and from which we could tour the area. This property did all that, and so much more.

The owners left instructions for how to get into the property, what was in the area, who to call, etc. These were great. We had no problems with anything. The house is fun--a lot of space and a lot of room to use for private activities or as a group. The kitchen was well stocked with all sorts of pots and pans and do-dads--we would think, "I wonder if there is a...." and someone else would know what cabinet it was in. Fun to live in for the week we were there. We used the grill and ate outside when weather permitted.

Early June means much of the tourist activity is not fully available yet, but we were able to get to a whale watching excursion, crossed the bridge onto Campobello Island, walked along Jasper beach, said hi to a couple of seals along the waterfront, ate meals in local restaurants and cooked our own. Didn't want to be any busier than that.

And oh, what a peaceful setting and a wonderful view! We arrived near to dusk the first day. We pulled out the deck chairs and took a glass of wine to the front lawn to watch the dusk set in. What a glorious view of the nighttime sky! And the dawns were fabulous also, whether watched from the master bedroom or from the large living room, or even from the deck. A cup of coffee, just a bit of brisk air, and a view of the water. Perfect mornings, even when it rained (which only happened once).

Cannot say enough good things about the owners. Best example--we forgot a bag in the house. I alerted Annie Gommers, who had it sent immediately. Humble thanks for that service. The bag almost beat us home.

Thanks for letting us enjoy this beautiful place. Hope we will have the chance to return some year or other!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the kind review Chris! We are delighted that you enjoyed all that the Captain's House has to offer and hope you will visit again to experience the blueberry season and/or the beautiful colors of the fall when it is still crisp to warm all the way through to Thanksgiving! But definitely through October...glad too the package arrived safely. Warmest regards to you and your family and again thank you for the review.! Annie Gommers

great time in Maine

We really enjoyed our stay, it was a great family vacation. We have four young children and the house was ideal, the ground as well, and we found plenty of fun things to do....and no crowds at all in the middle of August. Would definitely return.
