About Dawn VanVolkinburg

Both my husband and I grew up near Grand Rapids, MI where we currently live. If we could we would live in Traverse City now but my husband works at a hospital in Grand Rapids and enjoys what he does so we just visit the area as often as we can!

Dawn VanVolkinburg purchased this condo in 2012

Why Dawn VanVolkinburg chose Northern Michigan

We bought this condo because we both love northern Michigan especially the Traverse City area and have been coming here for years. We plan to retire in the area. In the meantime, we enjoy down time at our beautiful condo on the East Bay. When we can't be at the condo we like to have others enjoy it.

What makes this condo unique

We fell in love with the area because how beautiful the area is. Lake Michigan, Sleeping Bear Dunes, Torch Lake, Mission Point and so many other beautiful things to see and enjoy! What kept us coming back is amidst all the beauty are wonderful welcoming people.

What a lovely condo, with the BEST view of Traverse City sunsets! Right on the East Bay, it couldn't be more beautiful. Being able to utilize the health club and indoor pool at the Grand Traverse Resort was a HUGE plus too. The condo was stocked with amenities, clean, and quaint. Only 5 minutes from downtown Traverse City. We toured the Old Mission Peninsula wineries and also went to Sleeping Bear Dunes. We certainly hope to stay at your condo again in the future. Thank you so much Dawn!!!

Another great time!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second year of renting this condo. My friend of 47 years and I meet once a year for a couple of days to shop and get caught up with each other. This is a perfect place and the owners made sure everything met our expectations. We had an unexpected water problem not once but twice and both times the owners were right on it. Since we were out and about we didn't realize there was a problem until the owner contacted us to let us know they had a "plan B" in place if need be. When returning to the condo the water situation had been fixed and we continued to enjoy our time together.

The condo was clean and the patio view of the water is lovely. We are looking forward to next year.

This is a perfect place to stay if you are attending a wedding at grand traverse resort or intend to remain near east bay. You can take a cab to downtown traverse city but I do not suggest attempting to walk. Dawn was very pleasant and helpful. She allowed us a late check out as there were not any guest staying there after we left. If you need any assistance with planing or where to go she would be a good resource. Perfect for two couples. Great view of the sunset. In the later months when the pool is closed there is complete privacy. In the summer you could watch your kids at the pool from the deck, however, you wouldnt have much privacy on the deck.

We just enjoyed a week on this condo in the Traverse City area. It was all we wanted/hoped for and more. The location was great - close to town, yet far enough away for some quiet and less traffic. We had a great "base camp" for hiking, biking and winery touring all within a short drive. The pool and hot tub were still open and we enjoyed many sunsets from the hot tub. The location is perfect for sunsets!! Dawn was beyond amazing to work with!!! She gets all 5 of the stars for her quick, personable and informative correspondence! She's the best I've ever work with, for sure. The condo had all we needed for the week and the interior was quite clean - drawers, everything. There was a full-sized fridge which we used - and lots of freezer space. Never needed a stove with the microwave and toaster oven. The rooms were large enough with PLENTY of dresser storage and closets for our clothes. AND it was so adorably decorated in cottage theme. We also had access to the resort amenities, though the condo had all we needed. We visited the resort once, but we preferred the condo setting much more. The building is the closest to the water, so our views were so wonderful. We enjoyed sunsets on the water every night - just what I desire for vacation evenings - with a glass of wine on the double-balcony. We will definitely be back! Thanks, Dawn, for helping make our trip just perfect!

Great Family Vacation Despite Stormy Weather

  • 5 of 5

Our family of five managed to time our vacation to coincide with the biggest storm to hit Traverse City in years! Throughout the chaos that ensued (loss of power, downed trees, blocked roads, nearly empty grocery stores) Dawn was incredibly responsive and went above and beyond to ensure that we had everything we needed and were still able to enjoy our trip. The resort worked hard to get things back up and running as quickly as possible and within a few days, things were returning to normal. Obviously the owners had no control over the crazy weather conditions, but we sincerely appreciated Dawn's efforts to help us make the best of a less than ideal situation.

The condo itself is on the small side just as described, but we found it very clean, cutely decorated, and comfortable for our family of 2 parents and 3 elementary aged kids. The view of the pool and lake are wonderful and we really enjoyed watching sunsets from the balcony each evening. It's true that there are no laundry facilities or full sized oven in the unit, but we knew that based on the description and were able to plan accordingly with a trip to a laundromat mid-week. Dawn also ensured we had plenty of fresh towels throughout our stay.

The kids absolutely loved playing in the pool and we all loved that we were able to rent paddle boards and kayaks right in front of the property. There is some grass growing in the water close to the shore which didn't mar our beach experience, but there are a couple of ladders off the dock for swimmers to use if you'd prefer not to wade through grass. We've stayed in and around Traverse City a few times in the past and found this property with its beautiful view, lakefront pool, convenient kitchenette, and friendly staff to be a hidden gem.

Summer vacation

  • 4 of 5

Overall we had a good experience. We came up for a friend's wedding. The condo is in a good location and has a great pool and access to the lake - although the beach is not swimable close to shore due to seaweed, etc. The condo is good for 1 family. We were going to have friends stay with us and we were glad they backed out at the last minute due to the space constraints. The condo has most amenities however no oven or laundry. The owner did a good job communicating with us prior to arrival. The condo was decorated cute for the beach location but could have been a little cleaner.

Owner's Response: Hello Erin! Thank you for your review we always love hearing what our guests have to say! You commented that the condo could have been cleaner which comes as a HUGE shock to me. We own three units in the same building, using the same cleaning person (who came highly recommended from the resort and 6 other references) we constantly are told from our guests how clean our places are. I am sorry that was not your experience. I wish you would have communicated that to me during your stay so I could have addressed it and had it cleaned to your satisfaction. There is no seaweed along the shores of Lake Michigan! What has happened is that after years of water levels declining the lake levels have finally risen this past year which we are all excited about! What you thought was seaweed was just some grass that got covered by the water. The resort does a great job of keeping the beach combed but my guess is it may take a little longer to get all that grass taken care of. Honestly I'm not sure as you are the only guests that has made this comment. Unfortunately if you would have walked out just a little further you would have found that the lake has an amazing hard sandy bottom! For those of you who don't want to walk through the grassy part you can go out to the dock and jump in the lake there as the lake is shallow for quite a ways out. You are correct that we do not have laundry facilities or an oven in this unit both of which are clearly spelled out in our listing as is the size of our unit. For future renters there is two laundry facilities within a 2 minute drive and we do have a toaster oven and 4 stove burner and everything else found in a kitchen. We often have two families stay however it depends on the ages and how many children. Personally, I agree, you can't have more than 6 people in the condo for a week it's only 710 square feet which is why our listing clearly states that it only sleeps 6 people. Thank you again for staying with us and for your feedback. Hopefully people will read our other reviews to get a more accurate picture of what our place is like. Sincerely, Dawn

Called the 'Gold Coast' the Traverse City area is a beautiful place to relax, walk, bike, visit wineries and breweries, go shopping, in the winter you can enjoy the lights and cross country and downhill skiing, watching the waves on Lake Michigan, snow shoeing and snowmobiling. There are activities for kids, adults, singles and couples to enjoy. There are 25 wineries on Leelanau Peninsula and many more on Old Mission Peninsula. Traverse City is also close to Elk Rapids, Alden, Leland, and Suttons Bay, these are quaint towns that are a must visit spring through fall. Torch Lake is a must see! It is one of the world's most beautiful lakes and looks like the Caribbean Ocean! Another must see is Good Harbor Beach miles of soft sand and views of the Manitou Islands and Sleeping Bear Dunes. Sleeping Bear Dunes was rated the most beautiful place to visit in 2011. Charlevoix, Petoskey and Glenn Arbor are all within a 45 minute drive and are a must visit as well.
