Architecturally unique, west coast modern dwelling. Curved design of house and roofs with floor-to-ceiling windows throughout. Green roof design using native grasses and sedums (planned for Spring 2013). A 'Green' build with goals of energy conservation and rainwater collection.
Spacious studio with contemporary interior/modern furnishings. Bright and light with vaulted curved ceiling and wall-to-wall windows overlooking a green roof and views of the coast/mountain ranges beyond. Private entrance and deck.
Spectacular sunsets, coastal island/ocean views as far as you can see. Mossy bluffs smothered in foxgloves in Spring followed by waving, golden grasses in summer. Gnarly, weathered old firs, roots dug deep into the bedrock to withstand the channel winds, dark silhouettes against a big sky and even bigger ocean.
A small community, surrounded by rainforest, fern valleys, moss covered bluffs and easy walking trails. Short woodland stroll to one of Bowen's best public swimming beaches in Bowen Bay.
We believe you will find our setting and amenities to be exceptional here on the Bluffs. We look forward to welcoming you!
I was born to this coast and have a deep love for its rugged beauty and wild nature. In my work as a landscape designer and artist, I specializing in naturalistic gardens that are harmonious and in context with their wild surroundings. The creation and design of this house and landscape is a culmination of many years of imagining and desire to put down roots and I feel very fortunate to have found a home here. I love to share my experience of this special place with others and I am now able to do that through the creation of 'The Bluffs'.
Wynn Nielsen purchased this apartment in 2011
This is a new development that opened up on the west side of the island. The ridge is home to 7 bluff lots with spectacular coastal views. Notwithstanding the wondrous natural setting, the philosophy behind the development was what attracted me to build and live here. The developer has stringent guidelines to protect the environment including maximum house sizes, water conservation (roof water collection), sustainability and energy conservation (Builtgreen). It felt right to build here.
The winding one lane road through the rainforest opening up on to moss covered bluffs and, then, the ocean/sky views from the bluff. It was love at first sight.
We appreciate your hospitality and accommodating our dietary requests. We hope to be back. What a treat. O&T

We had a fabulous weekend watching the storm approaching. S&R
We spent a peaceful, three day stay at Bluffs on Bowen. We were warmly welcomed by Wynn who was a very gracious host. She made sure we had everything we needed and then left us to our privacy for the rest of the time. The views were outstanding and the suite was very warm and comfortable. Everything was spotless and ready for our arrival. We liked having a full kitchen to prepare our meals and also enjoyed the barbeque and deck area. The large tub for relaxing, bubble baths was a definite bonus! We were a short ride to the town where we could go and get our supplies. We were surrounded by great hiking trails and enjoyed soaking up the sun at a peaceful beach area just a short distance away. Bowen Island is a lovely place to visit. We would highly recommend that people go to experience it's quiet beauty and the best place to do so would be at Bluffs on Bowen. We can't wait to go back! Thank you Wynn for sharing your beautiful home with us.
I really enjoyed the peace and quiet in this suite in the woods. The rustic feeling of the yard and the homey inside was very nice for my stay, and everything I needed to cook and to relax was at hand. The view is terrific, of the water and adjacent islands. Lots of trails are nearby and are well marked. Thanks so much!
We enjoyed three restful and relaxing days at the Bluffs on Bowen. Wynn was a warm and welcoming host; ensuring that all our needs were attended to without being intrusive. The suite is beautifully appointed; an efficient design which offers maximum enjoyment of the breathtaking views. The well-stocked kitchen functioned very well and the cozy, modern bath allowed for a mini-spa experience. If you are looking for a quiet, relaxing "get-away"; the Bluffs on Bowen is the place to be. We hope to visit again soon! Brian & Jane L.
We were very happy with our choice to divert from the beaten tourist path to stay at Bluffs on Bowen for a couple of nights. We enjoyed eating meals on the porch and the quiet solitude of the island. We were blessed with two long and beautiful sunsets with a plethora of orange and red hues. Wynn's rental was very clean and nicely appointed. The kitchen had many staples and condiments as well as eggs, milk, sausage and bread. The hiking trails are accessible from the house by foot so there's no need to use your car to enjoy the natural beauty of the island.
My fiancé and I stayed here for five nights and were absolutely in love with the place. The views were incredible and the place itself is amazing. Wynn was a great host and left us to our privacy but was sure to know if we needed anything else from her and that our kitchen was stocked. The home was being photographed for an architectual magazine while we were there and Wynn made sure we were comfortable and had somewhere to go while the photographer was taking pictures so it wasn't an inconvenience for us. The island has many trails and beaches to relax at as well as great places to eat for supper. We enjoyed sunsets from the deck every night and loved waking up the views in the morning. We would definitely recommend this VRBO and can't wait to come back to stay!
It's all about the view
The view, the garden, the setting were all wonderful, even spectacular. The lodging looks amazing, but living there for 3 days was a bit challenging.
The shower has no adequate means to keep the water from spraying all over the rest of the room. Problems with the shower head made it worse. No instruction or warning from Wenn on this. No hooks or adequate means to dry towels used to sop up the puddles on the floor so we hung them over the chairs on the small deck.
The kitchen is very nice looking but the fridge is too cold. Despite of our efforts to adjust the temp a glass of water on the top shelf remained frozen. Many of the supplies were empty or nearly so. Is it really my job to survey the supplies? Although this is termed a B&B, it is cook your own. Also, do your own cleaning up.
The bed could have been more comfortable. After the first night it went down hill with us both feeling achy upon rising. Also, there was only a down comforter so it was either that or just a sheet.
Issues aside, we had a great time as the location was near our friend. Wenn did not intrude but was friendly. We might have brought more of this to her attention but did not want to spend our time improving her property. This is a beautiful place that could easily be improved to make the experience nearly perfect.
A couple notes: The path through the garden to the studio is uneven and there is to railing, even at the uneven rock steps to the door. This might be difficult for mobility challenged persons. Also, the room faces west and the sun can be quite warm in the afternoons. It is imperative to lower the shades is you're going to be gone.
'The Bluffs' is located on the west (sunset) side of Bowen Island in a very small community surrounded by designated parkland (Evergreen Park). It is a 15 min. stroll though forest trails to one of Bowen's best swimming beaches. The suite is nestled on a mossy ridge of steep bluffs, smothered in foxgloves in the summer and framed by gnarled, weathered old fir trees. It overlooks a deep valley and a spectacular coastline view stretching to the horizon. The sunsets viewed through floor-to-ceiling windows are spectacular, vibrant and ever-changing.
Start your day with a walk or run through the rainforest on easy trails that are right outside your door.
A diversity of pond and bird life abounds. A naturalistic garden, designed by the owner (Artist in the Garden Designs), melds house and wild surroundings into a harmonious relationship of both composed beauty and wildlife habitat.
The entrance to your suite entrance winds through the garden, past the ponds, and leads to a private entrance and deck.
If you like to walk, hike, swim or kayak; are a creative soul, e.g., a writer, a photographer or other professional needing a place to re-charge; are celebrating a special occasion, or just want to enjoy a relaxing and restorative place in close relationship with nature, we may be just what you are looking for. Create for yourself a wonderful and unforgettable experience here on 'the Bluffs'. We'll help.
