Topton Cabin Rental Photos and Description

Cabin, directly on the lake, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 5-7)

Thanks for stopping by! Maybe this is what you're looking for: an AFFORDABLE place for your small family to escape the heat and enjoy a pristine mountain lake, a quiet and beautiful couple's Fall getaway, a place to fish, swim, explore. You've found us!

Our cottage is not fancy or huge. It's cozy, clean and right on Lake Nantahala, one of the highest and cleanest lakes in the Eastern U.S. We bought the cottage years ago as a perfect escape from the busyness of Atlanta. Now we want to share it with you.

We have no pool tables or hot tubs or wii's. We DO have a great private dock, books, videos, and a place to simply unwind without all the usual distractions of home. Swim from our private dock. (Bring your snorkle gear ... i usually see fish when I snorkle around our dock ... the water is crystal clear) Bring your boat (ramp is 2 minutes away) or rent one from Lakes End Marina (or use our canoe). Kids love our dock, the many streams to wade in, and places to hike and explore (we're practically surrounded by the Nantahala National Forest). Parents love the quiet setting, our collection of books and movies, and the fact that your cell phone won't work up here! There are great restaurants 20 minutes by car (or ride your boat across the water to Lake's End Grill), a Super Walmart in Murphy (35 minutes away) for supplies, hiking trails all around (the Appalachian Trail is 20 minutes away), whitewater rafting close by, and lots of places to wander. We are not Disney World. We are quite pleased to be 'all natural'.

Beautiful Lake Cabin

  • 4 of 5

My family enjoyed our stay at the cabin. It was very clean inside and had a good working shower. It is located on a very steep hillside and has a nice dock on beautiful Lake Nantahala. We enjoyed swimming and fishing off the dock and had a great time relaxing in the mountains. The owners gave great tips on activities in the area. We enjoyed whitewater rafting and zip lining at NOC which was only a short drive away. Also, we rented a boat and went tubing one day. My only reason for not giving it five stars was the steep walk down to the lake. It does not have stairs all the way down. When it rained, it was rather difficult getting back up to the cabin. Overall, it was a great getaway and we all had fun!

Owner's Response: Thanks, Joe, for the kind words. Yep ... there's lot of "natural" stuff to do around here. And ... I'm going to figure out this walk down to the water problem. At this point I can't afford stairs all the way down. BUT ... there is hope! I'm going to just add 'em a bit at a time. Blessings!

Clean, cute and comfortable on a beautiful lake

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our short stay at Grace Cottage. The house was clean and very comfortable. Sitting on the back deck feels like you're up in a treehouse with a beautiful lake view. The dock is down a fairly steep hill from the house, but they've got plenty of rock steps in place to make it a stable little trek. It's good excercise if you forget something and need to run back up to the house.

We didn't try the kayak, but we took our two kids (7yo and 4yo) out on the canoe a lot. There are a couple islands and rope swings within canoeing distance on the lake.

We also took our kids up nearby Wesser Bald fire tower. It was a scenic drive there and just enough challenge for the kids hiking up to the tower.

Overall visit was just what we wanted. The kids want to know when we can go back.

Owner's Response: Brenda ... thanks for the kind words! I'm glad you could sit "in the tree house" and put your feet up. And ... i'm glad you discovered the Wesser Bald fire tower. Isn't it spectacular?! Well worth the hike, in my opinion. We'd love to have you back ... whenever you're ready. Blessings!

Beautiful Get Away Cabin in the Mountains

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful time at the cabin and actually enjoyed the old movies and complete absence of outside communication. However, not having the lift was certainly difficult as we had a boat at the dock and hauling gear up and down the path was difficult. We were told that the lift was not working at the time we rented and did not foresee the combination of the steep grade, the lack of stairs, and the thin air... got a great cardio workout... I would give it 5 stars if there was a better way to the dock either the lift or stairs. The path was slippery near the bottom of the slope.

Owner's Response: Thanks, Robert, for the good words. Yep ... that trail down the hill can give you a workout. We'd LOVE to add stairs all the way down, or fix the lift. Alas ... at this point, the cost of adding stairs, or of fixing the lift, would require me to win the lottery (which i don't play). In the meantime ... consider it ... uh ... aerobics!

Almost 5 stars

The cottage was perfect - we were greeted with a bottle of wine and a welcome note, which was lovely! It was the perfect size, very comfortable, had all amenities, and it was wonderful to truly unplug and get away from it all. The lake is also gorgeous - it is small, which means not a lot of boat traffic, and has beautiful views. We listened to owls in the early evening - unexpected and fun! When we read the lift was not working, I don't think my husband or myself truly understood the implications (and we are used to lake houses in the mountains of WNC). This is the only negative I can report; the trip from the cottage to the dock is approximately 150 yards, almost complete vertical. The steps do not extend the length of the journey. This does not easily allow for quick or easy trips to and from the house; if you plan on going to the lake - plan to stay at the lake. I'm sure this is fine for many!!! It did leave us feeling a bit trapped either one location or the other.
