Dave and Jaja sailed into Midcoast Maine after a 15 year circumnavigation on a small sailboat. 'The picturesque coastline, sense of community and numerous attractions of the area were so compelling that we stayed!'
Jaja Martin purchased this cottage in 2012
After living in various ports throughout the world, we fell in love with the Midcoast Area. When we found this unique parcel of lakefront property we felt that we owned a small piece of paradise.
Hidden from the road down a winding grassy driveway, this cottage affords the privacy we've always enjoyed. The waterfront includes a small peninsula where loons shelter and beaver swim past on the way to their lodge. We enjoy barbecuing on a warm summer evening, going for a swim, and relaxing as the sun sets.
One of the joys of renting our cottage is the opportunity to meet wonderful people like you! You were excellent guests, so clean and fun to talk with. Thank you for staying with us!
The house was perfect for a summer stay - the lake is gorgeous, the house is fully equipped with everything you need, and the location offers peaceful privacy.
I stayed in Jaja's home by the lake with my husband, two kids (8 and 4y/o) and my parents (in their 70s). We all LOVED our stay. The home was clean and had everything we needed. Jaya was so helpful, giving us recommendations on restaurants, stores, and even bringing by some crackers for us to use for eating lobster at home! The lake was gorgeous and perfect for swimming during our time there the first week of August. We would DEFINITELY visit again. My whole family was raving about what a great place I'd found. Thank you Jaja!!!
We loved the setting, the lake, the loons, canoeing, jumping off the flat, watching the sun set over the lake through the birch trees, the calming wood decor and the privacy. Highly recommended to anyone who wants a Maine vacation. Plus, the location is great--easy to get to other beautiful locales, like Pemaquid lighthouse, the rocky coast, Mohengan Island, and tucked away villages. My kids want me to mention that they also enjoyed playing croquet and badminton. Jaja was very responsive to our requests, before and during the stay.
We were first met by Jaja and her daughter who were very welcoming. They informed us of the turtle nesting area which was well marked. The cottage was clean, well kept and comfortable. There is no television which we were fine with and actually enjoyed not having one because we are from Chicago and wanted to get away from it all. The grill was good to have and was in good condition. We had a great time catching and releasing largemouth bass from the pier. Make sure you buy a fishing license, we were visited by boat from the Maine Game Warden who were very nice but did check to make sure we had our fishing license. The stars and night, AMAZING!!! We would definitely recommend the cottage if staying in the area.
I grew up in this area, and we chose to stay in a cottage in town while visiting with the extended family. We had such a great 2 week stay at Jaja's house. Since it is a bit off the main road which is a quiet road to begin with it was very very peaceful. The front yard was the perfect place for all the little cousin kids to play, the dock/rock is in a great spot for swimming (gets more sunlight than other spots on the lake) on Biscay pond, very centrally located between the stream that connects with pemaquid pond, as well as the pemaquid river, so it's ideal for kayaking and canoeing. We also caught 2 lake bass right off the dock! The house itself was for us perfect, and has a very special light and feel. the downstairs is a large open plan kitchen dining room living room/reading nook, so with kids it's ideal to keep track of everyone. The location is close to town, but enough out of town that you can sit on the lawn at night and watch the shooting stars. We ate lots of raspberries and blueberries from right in the yard and on the various little paths that lead to the dock, rock, and beaver dam. It was exactly the kind of stay we were looking for, only that 2 weeks was not long enough for us, but the house was already reserved after our 2 weeks. We will definitely hope to be lucky enough to get a longer period when we make our next summer stay in the area.
We really enjoyed our stay very much. A nice addition would be a fire pit in the open area. That would have added a nice touch. Also, the water edge is a bit difficult for little children, but overall enjoyed the pond and the canoe.
A canoe, equipped with paddles and life jackets, awaits you at your private waterfront. Visit Monhegan Island by ferry boat to hike to the cliffs, and experience the historical artist community. Enjoy whale watching, seal watches, or an evening lighthouse cruise. Botanical Gardens and nature walks. Kayak tours of lakes, ocean bays and outer islands.
