Family-friendly 3BR home on quiet vineyard near Stanford & Palo Alto

Bedrooms 3
Space 900 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 - 4 nights

About the property

3BR, 1BA with full kitchen, laundry

This recently remodeled home is nestled among an oak grove, a waterfall garden and a vineyard in the hills above Stanford University. It's perfect for traveling families and groups, as well as startups visiting Silicon Valley or conducting off-site meetings.

The home is convenient to I-280 (5 mins away), Stanford (10 mins), Sand Hill Rd (7 mins) and both San Francisco (35 mins) and San Jose (25 mins). It's very close to Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Woodside, Mountain View and Los Altos. Levi's Stadium is 30 minutes away.

This is a storied property - it once was a hunting lodge visited by Hollywood celebrities like Bing Crosby. In the 60s and 70s it became a hippie commune before becoming a private residence. This house was once a stable and was converted decades ago to a guest house, then remodeled and updated twice in the last 10 years, including new kitchen, bath and beds.

In addition to all the amenities inside the home, there's a full tennis court, basketball, and in warm weather a pool, hot tub and sauna are often available (please confirm availability before booking - these are sometimes unavailable). A private half-mile walking trail encircles the property and a network of public hiking trails are available just outside the fence.

The self-contained house includes a kitchen, dining area, living room and 3 bedrooms. The master bedroom features a luxurious queen bed fitted with 400-thread count Egyptian cotton sheets. There's a 42" HDTV as well as a desk, walk-in closet, dresser and full-length mirror.

The second bedroom includes a queen bed, desk, 32" TV and closet. The third bedroom has twin bunk beds, dresser and toys and books for young children. Additional sleeping is available on the convertible sofa in the living room. It converts easily to a queen-size bed with a memory foam mattress.

The bathroom features a marble floor and granite slab on the sink and the shower. The shower is granite with a solid cast-iron, porcelain tub. There are extra towels, pillows and blankets as well.

The full kitchen includes granite counters, premium cabinets and modern appliances: range, 2 ovens, microwave, dishwasher, disposal and full refrigerator/freezer with ice-maker and filtered water. Dishes, cups, silverware, pots, pans and utensils are available. There's plenty of counter prep space. In addition to the dining table, there's a bar-top with four stools.

The living room features a 60' HDTV with Blu-Ray DVD player, Wii gaming console and surround sound. You'll have one of Comcast's top internet and cable packages with ESPN, HBO, Showtime, Cinemax, Starz and many other channels. There's also a selection of books & toys that are appropriate for young children.

The home has plenty of natural light and includes its own heating, air conditioning, full-sized washer and dryer and plenty of closet space.

Just off the tennis court is an outdoor patio with table, umbrella and chairs.

You'll have your own driveway and parking accessible through an automatic entry gate.

The surrounding area is popular for walking, running, hiking, cycling (road and mountain), and horse-riding. It's quite beautiful and rustic despite being minutes from I-280, Sand Hill Rd, Stanford and Palo Alto. Shopping and dining are minutes away, either in town, Palo Alto, Menlo Park, or beyond.

Great little house in Portola Valley

  • 5 of 5

We had a great week in this charming guest house in Portola Valley. Inside, the house feels brand-new, with high-quality features and finishes everywhere. The two back bedrooms are both a good size, and the third bedroom is fine for 1-2 kids, with a nice bunkbed set-up. The single bathroom is very nice but snug, really only suitable for one person at a time. The great room has a fully-appointed galley kitchen, a full-size dining room table and a living room with a huge TV. Every window in the house has a great view of the small vineyard, mature trees, or flowering bushes and the big house. The grounds are lovely and fun to walk around, or to just hang out and watch the birds. If your group is active, there is a full-sized tennis court/basketball court combination, and a gorgeous pool (weather permitting). We loved the neighborhood: very quiet and picturesque, with easy access to 280. The nearby shopping center has several excellent restaurants: sushi, Italian, and Mexican, and a local market. Very easy access by car to Palo Alto and Stanford University, with Silicon Valley and San Jose just a bit further. East Bay, Downtown, and Marin County are easy day trips, as well.

A wonderful and peaceful stay

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a great time during our 2 month stay. Everything in the description are as stated and with a good quality to it and given the setting there are probably few object that can compete in the area, the kids just loved to use the basketball/tennis court. The house is just the right size unless you are a family of more than 4-5 and all what you might need are there even for a family with small kids. The house is located on a wonderful property in lovely and tranquil Portola Valley and even if you see the main house you have your privacy and own driveway. Our host Bill was very accommodating and helpful in every aspect and always responded in a quick and helpful way. We can recommend this object /J&A

Great place

  • 5 of 5

This is a charming little guest house on a huge Portola Valley grape-growing estate. PV is horse country and a 15 minute drive, with no traffic, to downtown Palo Alto, although traffic can double that. The 2 of us spent June there. Everything about this, including the very hospitable hosts, is a delight. The house is protected by a security gate and is well equipped, with beautiful grounds, 3 bedrooms, a serviceable kitchen, and a big flat screen tv with a top shelf Comcast package included and a great box with pvr to record any shows. You don't get that at the 4 seasons. The rental was well organized, with detailed instructions for everything. The hosts offered us use of the pool any time we wanted and there was a totally idle tennis court the entire month, although my 11 year old grandson used it one day to shoot hoops with the hosts' 11 year old. We did miss having a gas bbq, but otherwise our month there was perfect.

Not too inviting

  • 3 of 5

The location of this little house is lovely, and the kitchen was sufficiently functional, but there were many little problems that made our stay less than perfect. The mattresses were awful - everyone had back issues after just the first night. The duvets and matching pillow cases were obviously not laundered, which was just gross. There is no proper patio or even just a lounge chair outside, so no way to enjoy the lovely surroundings and weather. Just very upright iron chairs which can be placed either facing your car in the driveway or a nasty pile of junk wood scraps behind the house. The owner came by once to deliver something, and scurried back so quickly, without even a "welcome", that whenever felt comfortable asking about the pool.

Owner's Response: We're so sorry the guests didn't enjoy themselves and wish they had contacted us. We generally get very good reviews here and elsewhere. We speak frequently with guests via email and text though we also respect their privacy while they're visiting. We check the conditions frequently and use a professional cleaner between visits. After this review we checked and verified that one queen and one twin mattress needed replacing, so we did so. In terms of the outdoors, a trail leads through the vineyard and around the property, and contrary to the review, there's a full patio on the tennis court with table, chairs and an umbrella as shown in the photos.

beautiful location close to Stanford

This little gueshouse is located nicely in the mountains next to Stanford. We enjoyed our stay and the visits of the dog from next door.

Quiet Get Away

We enjoyed the little guest house. After a long day at the Horse Park at Woodside it was great to come home to the little house. The owners were very accommodating and helpful. The property was beautiful. Thanks for helping to make this a great weekend.
