Dragon Fly, as it is affectionately called, is an amazingly private, quiet, and serene luxury home located on the North East Cape Fear river, about 30 minutes from Wilmington and Wrightsville Beach.
CHECKIN time is 4:00 PM or later on the date of arrival,
and CHECKOUT time is by 10:00 AM on date of departure.
We need this 6 hour time frame, so that we may make the property ready for each new guest.
Built in 2002 by the current owner as a vacation home, this home is the ultimate getaway. A brand new cooks' kitchen, massive deck and screened in porch face the river. A projector + 10' screen for screening films help to make this place very special. The home boasts 5 bedrooms and 3.5.5 bathrooms, with an extra large jacuzzi and walk in shower in the master. Nearly every piece of furniture is antique (circa 1900) and most of the art is from local artists. On the ground floor there is a full pool table, iron gym, and heavy boxing bag. Bring a boat, canoe or kayak to enjoy the river, or take a quiet walk around the adjacent pond to view the many animals and foliage that call this region home. Ever seen a woodpecker a foot and a half tall? How about Venus Flytrap, carnivorous plants that only grow within a 75 mile radius of our house and nowhere else in the entire world!
Throw horse shoes, or enjoy sitting by the Asian fire pit as you grill steaks over a real hardwood fire. A massive porch fronts the house and faces the river, of which a section is screened in.
We do not have good TV reception or Internet service, due to our secluded location. Actually, we hope that our guests really enjoy being 'unplugged' while here, off the grid! After all, why come to an Eco-paradise to sit inside and watch TV?
The property comes with a caretaker in the event of questions or additional needs. Catering can be arranged.
Thank you very much for your interest.
We are a family from this area. My people settled in this area in 1640, emmigrating from Scotland, England and Wales nearly 400 years ago. We built this home in 2002 for our personal use, and went to great lengths to use only the finest building materials, sparing no expense to create an environment that is top quality. I grew up in this area, swam in this river as a child as did all my forbearers, and wanted to create a legacy property that my family will continue to enjoy for another 400 years. Permanent quality is what we enjoy... Only the best!
Cliff Davis purchased this house in 2002
This area is an Eco-paradise, great bird watching, a pristine rural riverside setting with wonderful beaches nearby (Wrightsville, Topsail, and Hempstead). In this day of hustle and bustle, it is still nice to know that a dirt lane still exists that can transport you to another place in time.
Several things make this location so unique and desirable.
Although we are deep in the woods, fronting a gorgeous river, we are only six minutes from Interstate 40. The nearby town of Burgaw has all the charm of a beautiful southern village, antiques and old timey stores, yet we are only 30 minutes fron the bustling seaport of Wilmington, sometimes referred to as a mineature Charleston, S.C. Our area practically oozes with ancient cypress trees, hanging Spanish moss and ante-bellum charm.
Overall, loved the house! It worked great for us as a large group as there were many small, individual rooms. The living area was a bit tight for everyone to fit during the day, making this much more ideal during the summer than in the winter (as there is a great outdoor area and many comfortable porches), but was still great during the winter.
If I had to criticize it for something, the lack of both internet and cable was a bummer. There's a great sound system for music and projector for movies, but being able to watch a football game or stream Netflix would have been great.
This house was perfect for our family and allowed us to enjoy quiet time together as well as relaxing outdoors. We loved the hammock, and there were plenty of trees outside perfect for hanging our own ENOs, too. The kids splashed in the river and we enjoyed the outdoor fire pit. Cliff was VERY welcoming and attentive to our needs. He made us feel like family! We had an amazing dinner at Holland's Shelter Creek and even caught a few HUGE catfish! We drove into town and had a nice lunch and tasting at a local winery, Duplin. We spent a perfect day at Wrightsville beach, a short drive from this house. We can't wait to come visit Burgaw and the Dragon Fly again very soon! My boys are STILL talking about the Swamp Booger that lives in this house. Thank you Cliff for making us feel so welcomed!
We celebrated my parents' sixtieth anniversary. With 12 people there we had enough space where we weren't running into each other, enough bathrooms, and a great time celebrating.
We were able to book and stay with little notice and we were all extremely happy with what our money bought us. We had a great stay, no problems, attentive owner and easy to talk to. I would stay at the DragonFly again and I would recommend it to friends and family as well.
This property is totally misrepresented on the VRBO listing. The pictures are of the property when it was brand new. We arrived at the house to find it was very dirty, infested with ants and there were problems with the appliances in the kitchen. The stove top was broken. We received a call from the owner the morning we were in route to the property to say the stove had been broken for one month and the repairman would be there on Wednesday. He came but the owner did not meet him there thus no repairs were made. It is unreasonable to expect the tenants, on vacation, to meet a repair person. The toaster oven in the kitchen was also full of food crumbs and mold. We had to clean this on arrival as well. The guest book stated the dishwasher leaks water in the floor and to leave a towel on the kitchen floor to absorb the water. The dishwasher fills the kitchen floor with water. We had to hand wash our dishes all week. The oven had molded food splattered all over it and I had to clean it before we could even use it.
On arrival to the home we found a window open in one of the bedrooms and the bed had not been changed. We had to change the sheets before we could use the bed.
Ants were all over the house. I sent an email concerning this to the owner who stated he would send his exterminator, but no one ever came. There was a note from the previous tenant concerning the ant infestation as well as the garbage left on the property. There was trash lying around the house on the ground, the barrel by the hammock was so full of trash we could not use the hammock d/t bees and ants.
The fire pit was so full of weeds we had to pull them up and discard to be able to use the fire pit. There was fire wood provided but was full of ants. The decks were filthy as well the outside grill. We did not even use the grill as it was too dirty to even think about cleaning; instead, we put the grate over the fire and let it get hot to sanitize it and cooked our burgers over the fire instead of the grill.
Yes the house is roomy and full of antiques but the furniture was so dirty we did not even want to sit on it and spent our time sitting in the rocking chairs on the porch and at the dining table which is in the middle of the living room.
We were very disappointed with this home as it was represented as a beautifully kept home on the VRBO site.
If you want to disconnect and relax this is the place.

Dragon Fly is situated in a peaceful, rural setting that is an eco-paradise! We are located directly on the Northeast Cape Fear river, and are a short 35-40 minute drive from some of the most beautiful beaches in North Carolina. The ultimate getaway for nature lovers.
We are only 5 miles outside of Burgaw, N.C. Burgaw is a small charming town, the seat of Pender County, the last of 100 counties to be created in North Carolina.
Our town also happens to be the movie location for the current CBS hit show, 'Under The Dome.' The movie studio is in Wilmington.
Burgaw is the quaintest small town, like going back in time to 'Mayberry' with Andy and Barney. It is on the Civil War Trail, and boasts the oldest railway station in North Carolina, built circa 1850.
