OWNER/AGENT After living all over the world as an Air Force brat, I settled in Southern California. At the age of 42, I decided to take up horseback riding which brought me to the Circle Z Ranch outside of Patagonia. When I retired from my job as a senior Department Store Executive, my husband and I bought land and built our dream 'Fallen Oak Ranch' where I enjoy the sheer beauty of the land, my horses, and dogs. I am also co-owner of Long Realty Sonoita-Patagonia.
Jean Miller purchased this cottage in 2006
If you like to be a little remote, down a mile and a half of dirt road, up on a ridge with jaw-dropping views, near horses, birds, cattle and other wild life, you'll love this place. A SUV is recommended because the dirt road is tough on small sedans. You can hike right out from the house to incredibly beautiful canyons and ridges. The Coronado National Forest is just one property away.
World class bird watching, the ability to ride a horse directly out into the Forest without trailering, watching my dogs run off leash, stopping the car to let the cattle pass, seeing the incredible stars at night and spectacular sunsets are all a part of living where I do.
This was a lovely place, well cared for and well-appointed. It was nice to have a fully equipped kitchen and laundry room, and a nice open living room with a wood stove. The location was ideal--away from main highway down a gravel road through wooded pastures, but still only a 17-mile drive to Nogales for groceries and supplies. We are avid birders. The casita is in a great location for birdwatching, with oak woodlands below and grasslands above. We spent quiet mornings on the porch watching birds at the feeders in the garden. We wish we had taken more time to hike around the ranch. Our host was very gracious and helpful. We really enjoyed our time here. The only unpleasant experience we had was getting caught in a speed trap coming into Patagonia. It was a classic set-up. The speed limit dropped from 60 to 45 to 35 as we came around a bend on the highway north of town. (Our speeding ticket was $400 for allegedly driving 60 in a 35 mph zone.) Driving in from the south was a very similar set-up. We frequently saw cars that had been pulled over by Patagonia police on both sides of town.
We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of our stay at The Fallen Oak Ranch. The casita is super comfortable, clean, and fully stocked with all conveniences. The views of the local mountains from the front porch are spectacular, and the peace and quiet at the ranch was music to our souls.
Birding at the ranch and local roads is also quite nice. We will be back!
This is a dream property! You are in a beautiful canyon up about 4000 feet. Your outside view is wonderful mountains. There is a large covered porch on which to sit and see the sun rise between two mountains and then watch it set with glorious colors. Any kind of outside activity is available from this location, such as, walking, hiking, birdwatching, etc.. The town of Patagonia is a short distance away with many good restaurants, a wonderful library, lovely shops, and even an Opera House. Many of Arizona's great attractions are a few miles away, making day trips very easy and most enjoyable. We have stayed in this property five times and absolutely think it is a real find.
... And we'd still give it a "Seven". Places with views and friendliness like this are rare. This is our second time here and our stays are for the month. It's 3 miles into town, but feels like a total escape to peace & privacy. The barn and 3 horses below are bucolic! The massive mountain-scape mesmerizes from the porch ... For that gentle awakening first coffee in the morning to a rise-out-your-chair "thrilling" sunset hour. The clouds in between am & pm are (no eggageration!)'... The absolute best in the galaxy! Jean, your hostess is a very lovely lady with impeccable taste & wonderful stories. Our Casita reflects the exceptional in every way. She thought of everything. You'ld swear you were home! OK ... Now I've read other people's reviews. Mine just sounds like everyone else's ... Makes me want to start over and ... Try even harder!
Some places are so wonderful I hesitate to review as it will be fully booked when I wish to return. This is a gem in a lovely setting. The property has many amenities and feel at home immediately. Jean, the owner is very helpful and a great person. There are many places to explore in the area eg State Park, Wineries, Green Valley, Nogales.
My husband, 3 pets, and I had a blissful four weeks at this casita just south of Patagonia, AZ. We were surrounded by mountains, and the views were stupendous from the comfortable porch. The 1.5-mile drive down Flux Canyon Road to Route 82 into Patagonia (3 miles total) was beautiful. All of us (including our two dogs) bonded with the horses on the property. The clean, well-appointed casita had every amenity we could have wanted, including laundry, a well-equipped kitchen, great bathroom, TV, excellent bed, couch, and perfect cell phone service. The views were stupendous from both the bedroom and the livingroom/porch. It truly is "a nature lover's delight." We spent many hours watching birds by day and scanning stars by night. When we weren't basking in the peace and beauty of the casita, we enjoyed the proximity to Nogales, Sonoita, the Sonoita Creek Preserve (bird-watching), San Rafael Valley, Patagonia Lake, and of course the town of Patagonia, where we went everyday to enjoy the Gathering Grounds breakfasts, Wagon Wheel dinners, the town library, and Pilates classes. Hiking and riding opportunities are myriad here, but even with a broken foot I was able to enjoy the Patagonia scenery from the casita's splendid porch. If you have a 4-wheel drive high-clearance vehicle, you will be able to take even more advantage of the beautiful roads in this area. Devotees of Thoreau will find much to appreciate in this southwestern casita. Our stay here cleansed and rejuvenated our minds, preparing us to re-enter the chaotic urban, workaday world!
Located in the quaint old western mining town of Patagonia, Arizona (pop. almost 1,000!), now home to artists, bird watchers, mountain bikers, trail riders, and all types of nature lovers. One of the premier bird watching areas in the United States with its unique 'sky island' habitats, over 300 species have been slighted here.
Ask anyone who now lives here what brought them to the area and you will hear many different answers but with one common thread -- the beauty of the wide open spaces and the amazing wildlife and recreational opportunities available. I came to explore the West on horseback, others for mountain biking, hiking, meditation or just the great year around climate at our 4000-5000' elevation.
Tour the nearby wineries of Arizona's wine country in Elgin, visit Spanish missions and ghost towns, go horseback riding, hiking, biking or bird watching or even go to Nogales, Sonora for a great mariachi brunch and shopping.
