About the property

Bright, Clean and Comfortable Home near Beaches and Wooded Trails

"Peak-a-Blue" is a beautiful 2 story home with an open design. It is in a quiet neighborhood, an easy walk to the ferry and also to the beaches and rocky shores. You can be lulled to sleep by the waves, and wake up to a sparkling view of the ocean.

My favorite spot is the front porch with cushioned rockers and a love seat, as well as a few tables for your coffee and breakfast, a book and games or a glass of wine. It sits way up high, so you can see the surroundings, but also have privacy.

There are three bedrooms--two with queen beds on second floor, each with views of the ocean and cliffs. Also upstairs is a large bathroom with tub and shower.

On the first floor is one twin bedroom, a bathroom with a shower, a laundry closet with washer and dryer, and of course the kitchen, dining area and large living room. The dining area seats 6, and there is an island with stools for 2. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need for cooking, baking and boiling lobster. There is a gas range, a microwave, toaster, toaster oven and a coffee maker.

The living room is equipped with comfortable furniture, games, books and a smart TV. Wireless Internet and cable TV are provided. There is a sunny deck off the back of the house overlooking the gardens and woods, and a large folding table can be brought up from the basement if you'd like to use the deck for eating meals.

In the basement is a full-sized ping-pong table!

The house is a 2 minute walk from the back shore with stunning rocky beaches, and a 10 minute walk to Sandy Beach, "Down Front" and the ferry dock. "Down Front" is where the action is--restaurants, cafe, pub, ice-cream shop, gift shops, grocery store, hardware store, art galleries, bike and kayak rentals. The rest of the island is beach, forest and residential.

CATS live in the home when the owners are staying in the home, off and on, about a total of 4 months out of the year.

About Barbara Carter

I grew up in the countryside of Maryland surrounded by fields of sheep and horses, thick woods with streams and wildflowers and country roads. In summer we went to a beach on the Ocean. In the the 60's when I was 13, I was taken to Maine as a babysitter, for a month. I fell in love with Maine, and promised myself I would live there one day. I moved to Maine in the 80's, to Peaks Island.

Barbara Carter purchased this house in 2003

Why Barbara Carter chose Peaks Island

I love Peaks Island for many reasons. It has a little of everything that I grew up loving in Maryland, woods, ocean, beach, horses, streams, but it also has beach ROCKS! We did not have beautiful, smooth rocks of every size, shape and color in Maryland.

I bought my blue 1900 cottage in 2003. Unfortunately, I lost my cottage to fire in 2013. I am so fortunate to have been able to rebuild, and now I have a new blue cottage, Peak-a-Blue.

What makes this house unique

At first I just wanted my exact same cottage back! But, as I became adjusted to the loss, I took on the opportunity to improve on it. I added a big front porch, something I had always wanted. I also decided to take advantage of the ocean view from the second floor, and put two bedrooms upstairs, where there had been one previously. The loft room in the old cottage was painted blue (my favorite color), and it was my most favorite room in the world. I was so happy to be able to re-create the feeling I got from that loft bedroom, in my new blue master bedroom. It is definitely my happy place!

Guestbook comments from the owner

The views were amazing from the room we had on the second floor. The home was very clean, new and very well built. The decor was also just right. There was no clutter and the home was extremely clean.

Clean and bright home

  • 5 of 5

My husband, two sons (19 and 21) and I enjoyed our stay here. The house is new and bright with lots of natural light. There is a nice front porch for reading or chatting. The kitchen is well-equipped for cooking (pots, pans, lobster pot). The three bedrooms and two bathrooms were perfect for four of us. The whole house was clean and fresh. The location is good, both close to the shops and ferry, and to the back shore. It is on a pretty quiet street.

We all enjoyed this property and would stay here again.

The perfect spot for our week at Peak's!

  • 5 of 5

We LOVED our stay at Barbara's house ... not only was it wonderfully comfortable, clean, tidy, well-lit, and new, it was the perfect spot to feel part of the island while also being close enough to town and the sites by foot and bike. A short distance to many wonderfully rocky coastline spots, perfect for sea glass hunting, tide pool examinations, and chilly foot baths, the house is quiet, bright, and has nearly every amenity one might need (though no dishwasher or blender!). Original art everywhere is a lovely plus, as is the comfortable and contemporary decor.

Too, Barbara was kind, thorough, and incredibly accommodating with us. She met us in person upon our arrival, showed us all we needed to know about the house and grounds, and quickly and graciously helped field silly questions about TV remotes by phone.

It was a perfect week, and such a special place. Thank you for a fabulous week at Peak's Island!

Classic Maine Beach House

  • 5 of 5

House beautifully appointed in its simplicity. Easy stroll to "town" for coffee in AM and dinner in PM. View from second story bedroom window Maine! Relaxing porches....easy to chat with folks as they meander past the front porch, it makes one feel as a real islander! Owner very accommodating.
