About Barrett Karr

We have lived on the Hill for 17 years and worked in and out of government. We are proud parents, occasional foodies, and supporters of local artists. We always dreamed of owning a house on East Capitol Street and -- bonus! -- ours came with a one bedroom apartment.

Barrett Karr purchased this apartment in 2012

Why Barrett Karr chose Washington DC

We moved to Capitol Hill 17 years ago and never left. The Hill has a unique combination of history, walkability and a genuine neighborhood feel -- all within steps of the US Capitol. When we finally had the opportunity to buy a house on the street that is literally at the heart of the Hill, we jumped. Come see why! We may even let you in on a few of our favorite local haunts...

What makes this apartment unique

East Capitol Street is one of DC's most historic avenues; it literally is the north-south dividing line and runs directly into the US Capitol. Houses on East Capitol rarely come on the market; we waited 17 years for this one!

Great location, comfortable lodging.

  • 4 of 5

The property was clean and had everything we needed. Sheets and comforter, pillows and towels were high quality and comfortable. We learned that we were close enough to walk to the Eastern Market, the Capitol (more of a hike but we're 75 and 80 so younger people could easily do it), a bus stop, breakfast nook, even a used bookstore. Many restaurants and a jazz bar (with good food) were near the Market. I would promote location more and provide info about nearby cafes, etc. Cards for the bus and Circulator (which goes around the Mall) were on the table but there was no info about where to go to get the cards recharged. A terminal where we could do so was just beyond the Eastern Market.

The carpet looked as if it could use a good cleaning (as in wash) and the rug placed on top was curling at the corners, a bit of a hazard. Otherwise, the decor was uncluttered and pleasant, and furniture comfortable enough. We'd go there again and are recommending it to friends and family who might visit D.C.

Cute, neat, clean, and fantastic location!

  • 5 of 5

My two young daughters and I loved this freshly-painted, attractively decorated apartment and would definitely stay here again. The location can't be beat, the neighborhood is quiet at night and beautiful to walk in--we walked every day to nearby restaurants, Metro station and the National Mall. Also close by is a little corner market with groceries, supplies & ATM, and a cute used book store that's fun to browse. Nice touches included high quality shampoo, conditioner and soaps in the restroom, and a handy washer-dryer. We drove up for the long weekend and were able to park on the street right in front with a visitor permit. Overall this was a great home base from which to explore DC!

Walkable distance to all the great areas of Washington DC.

Exactly what we were looking for in DC. The apt. is in a neighborhood area so quiets down at night but is close enough to all the sights of DC to walk. Plenty of choices for neighborhood dining or shopping with the wonderful Eastern Market just 4 blocks away. The apt. has all the amenities you need if you chose to stay in and cook. Thank you for listing this great place so we could enjoy our stay in DC.

Comfortable and Great Location!

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I enjoyed our stay and it was one of our best vacations! We stayed four nights so we had 3 whole days to see everything on our list. Location is awesome the rental was clean quiet and bed was very comfortable had everything we needed. Also has washer and dryer. So close to all the sights and places to eat. I really enjoyed the Eastern Market which was a short walk away. We got to tour the Capitol and the White House!! I highly recommend getting tickets before your stay was so interesting and amazing! The metro is also close by and bus stop is on the corner. You can walk to all the sights but we took our bikes with us and that was the best way to get around DC for us. I also recommend seeing DC at night so Beautiful with all the lights! We would definitely stay again! The Dafts
