San Diego County House Rental Photos and Description

2000 sq ft home, 2 lg bedrooms, 2 baths, 'great room', large deck, stunning view

Pine Street Retreat is a lovely, private home found on perhaps the most exclusive cul de sac in the historic and affluent neighborhood of Mission Hills. The home is well-known for its breathtaking gardens that have year-round lush foliage, flowers, fruit trees, and more. The home's large wrap-around deck and floor-to-ceiling picture windows offer stunning canyon and ocean views. The corner location gives occupants complete privacy and peace. Easy, safe on-street parking is always available in the quiet residential neighborhood. This charming retreat is within walking distance to the Mission Hills village coffee houses, restaurants, shops, Pioneer Park, Presidio Park, and the historic Old Town district with its many attractions and central trolley station. Casual strolling or energetic jogging through the Mission Hills historic neighborhood is exciting in itself with its 19th Century mansions, classic Spanish haciendas, and early 1900 California bungalows. It is a paradise for the architecture or history buff as well as anyone who loves heritage houses. The home is an escape in itself when you return from the many possible San Diego excursions. The safe, friendly neighborhood makes you feel secure and at home. The Retreat offers your best option for location, amenities, relaxation, and privacy.

Pine Street Retreat has a large 'great room' perfect for families to enjoy cooking, casual dining, and relaxing together as well as a more formal living room and dining room. All of these spaces have stunning garden and canyon views. Every room of the Retreat is completely furnished with all the details of an inviting, cozy family getaway with many “European B&B” touches. The two large bedrooms, one with a king bed and one with a Queen bed, have pillow top mattresses, lovely decor pillows and spreads, cozy comforters, and high quality linens. An additional combination Aero bed is available for rental parties of five or six, which can be used as two singles or as a King when the singles are zipped together. The two nice bathrooms have either a tiled walk-in stall shower or a full bathtub/shower combo. For families with a baby or toddler, the home has a Pac’n Play, Bumbo, high chair, booster seat, double jogging stroller, umbrella stroller, various toys and beach play items, and lots of play space.

The home's colorful, happy kitchen is fully equipped for cooking, dining, and entertaining with lovely dishes, table ware, bar ware, and linens. Even the gourmet cook will find the necessary appliances, cookware, bake ware, and utensils for any special meal or recipe. The kitchen is fully stocked with spices, herbs, oils, sugar, floor, baking basics, coffee, tea, and much more for the rental guest to enjoy. A gas barbeque is just outside the 'great room' on the large private view deck so families can enjoy cooking, dining, and relaxing in the beautiful communal space either indoors or out. The large laundry room has a washer and dryer complete with supplies as well as a storage room with a “beach kit” of picnic ware, beach chairs/towels/umbrellas, various sizes of coolers, Boogie Boards, a Frisbee, and sand toys.

Pine Street Retreat has one large, private deck with barbeque, dining table, and seating, and another shared deck with a large hot tub, cozy towels, and its own dining table. Both have spectacular views of Mission Bay and the Pacific Ocean, Point Loma, and the surroundings canyons. Visitors often view soaring hawks and many other bird species from the decks' private “tree house” location. Kids enjoy using the hot tub as a pool for playtime while adults savor sitting in the hot tub with a glass of wine or cup of tea to relax and rejuvenate. Enjoying a romantic candlelight dinner on either deck as you watch the sun set over the ocean -- a total escape in itself. After dark, owls can be heard softly calling to one another from the nearby canyon’s Eucalyptus trees. The solitude is delicious. To add some romance and celebration, for much of the year rental guests can view the distant sky filled with Sea World fireworks, all from a cozy deck chair or the hot tub.

Gardening is our passion and hobby, and our large gardens, a Certified Wildlife Habitat, are well-known to the neighborhood. Enchanting the visitor with many secret “rooms” to explore and delight, the garden has whimsical pieces of “exterior art” as well as numerous spots to sit with a morning cup of coffee to watch the many hummingbirds, finches, and butterflies that inhabit the lush landscape. The tranquil surroundings include year round herb, vegetable, and salad gardens as well as numerous fruit and citrus trees. Many varieties of roses and other flowers bloom during all seasons. We enjoy sharing our garden’s vegetable and floral bounty with our rental guests.

Other amenities of this inviting retreat include family games, a library of adult and children’s books, magazines, movies, music, flat screened TV, DVD, an Ipod dock, wireless broadband internet, and maps and information for the San Diego visitor. We are life-long San Diego natives who enjoy helping our rental guests make the most of their visit, offering many ideas that create an experience beyond the usual. We pride ourselves in our hospitality, our respect for your complete privacy, and the pristine condition of this lovely home. You will feel very well taken care of as Retreat rental guests.

Located just above Old Town and Presidio Park, the Retreat is only five to ten minutes from the airport, Little Italy, Downtown and the Gaslamp District, the famous San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Sea World, Petco Park, the harbor, Fashion and Mission Valley shopping centers and golf course, and many beaches. It is just two minutes from freeways 5 and 8 for quick jaunts to La Jolla, Del Mar Racetrack, Torrey Pines golf course, Legoland, Wild Animal Park, and other north county locations. The border crossing into Mexico is only twenty minutes away. As already mentioned, many places of interest are within easy walking distance. The location could not be more perfect.

We welcome children and families in this non-smoking environment (smoking outside is permitted). Email (best option) or call us with any questions so we can help you begin planning your wonderful Pine Street Retreat getaway. About Mary Quinn

We are life-long residents of San Diego who love our city and sharing it with others. We have been active in the business, entertainment, and museum communities of San Diego, so have lots of good advice about how to create a truly unique visitor experience here. We are passionate gardeners, creating beautiful and delightful surroundings for our visitors. Our pride in Pine Street Retreat is obvious, so come and see it for yourself. We know you will love what you find!

Mary Quinn purchased this house in 2004

Why Mary Quinn chose San Diego County

We moved our growing family to Mission Hills in 1983 and have raised our five children in this amazing neighborhood. We chose it for its 'small town' qualities: everyone knows one another, neighbors take care of each other as well as meet up for coffee, the community is vibrant, eclectic, and safe. Everyone walks here -- to work if possible, to shops and restaurants, to the park, and just for pleasure. After 30 years we still enjoy looking at the many, many beautiful homes on our streets. Mission Hills residents are helpful, friendly, and inviting. They are proud of their community and welcome visitors to it. Come and get the best of both worlds -- a village in the middle of urban San Diego. We also have the best weather in San Diego -- high enough to avoid the fog but the perfect elevation to catch the ocean breezes all year long. Living or visiting here is a pretty magical experience.

What makes this house unique

Pine Street Retreat is more wonderful than the website photos can possibly show. Every room is charming, cozy, and relaxing. Most rooms have stunning canyon, ocean, and bay views. The surrounding gardens are striking. Watching a beautiful sunset over the ocean every evening from the view windows or outside on the deck is the perfect end to the day. While San Diego has many, many special tourist attractions, our rental guests look forward with pleasure to returning to this serene home after their excursions. Pine Street Retreat is not just a place to stay -- it is a vacation in itself.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Quoted from the Pine Street Retreat guest book:

This was such a perfect getaway for our anniversary. We thought we would dine out, but the fabulous kitchen and sunset views from the huge windows made it hard to leave. We had coffee in a different area of the garden every morning. The hummingbirds even chattered at us! Thank you for this organized, clean, beautiful place. Retreat is a perfect name for this home. We will bring some friends with us another time to enjoy this again.

Would definitely stay here again!

  • 5 of 5

My family had a wonderful time staying at this property. It exceeded our expectations. The home is charming, clean, and in a very quiet residential neighborhood. The view of Mission bay from the deck is spectacular. We were easily able to view fireworks from our deck several nights in a row. Sitting on the deck in the morning was very peaceful and beautiful and we enjoyed several dinners on the deck in the evening. The gardens are beautiful, and the neighborhood was a nice place to walk and explore. The location is very convenient. One can access other parts of town quite easily.

The amenities in the house were more than adequate. The great room off the kitchen was a perfect place to congregate. Bedrooms were comfortable.

The owners were very responsive to our emailed questions.

The owners did not meet us for check-in. Rather, we were supplied detailed instructions about accessing the house, and that worked perfectly. We contacted them after we got into the home, to let them know we arrived safely and things were fine.

Further information regarding the house, the neighborhood, and personal favorites of the owners ( things to see, places to eat, nearby grocery stores, etc) along with numerous travel guides for the area were waiting for us on the kitchen counter. That was very nice and very helpful.

They even have a guest book, and encourage guests to sign it-- another nice touch.

We visited during a heat wave, and in spite of the fans and cool evenings, for a few days, the house was a bit warm at night. That was the only negative, but I would not let that stop me from staying at this lovely home in the future.

So Special

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely wonderful house. We enjoyed every second there. I am taking this chance to thank the hosts for their hospitality. Both answered every email with detail information. the location, the beds, the bathrooms, and everything else was more then perfect. We enjoyed the walk every morning in the neighborhood. I only needed to buy a tea kettle since I found theirs a bit old and that me just try to find something (all the other kitchen stuff were clean). I have used homeaway/VRBO many times and I have never experienced a retreat like this one ... it is just special ... so special

May we move in permanently?

  • 5 of 5

As we told the owners in their message book, the only trouble with the cottage was that they may soon have a family of five living there permanently! Families will especially enjoy this lovely, quaint, beautiful getaway retreat. The home has everything including panoramic views of the city, ocean, the Mission style USD campus, and more. Inside it has all the comforts of home and more. From ample, comfortable furniture, cozy linens and lovely kitchen-ware - to the artwork and family photos scattered about, we felt like family!

There is a second unit on a lower level for rent as well, we understand, and while another group was there during our stay, the house is so wonderfully constructed we never heard them (hopefully they didn't hear too much of us!). We traveled to San Diego from Northern California with our three teens for only 3 days as part of a So Cal college tour trip -- we're hoping one of the kids chooses a university in the area to give us an "excuse" to come back to the Cottage.

The owners even provided a detailed guide to the area, written themselves, which saved us considerable time in researching and making decisions. Nearby favorites for us were the San Diego Zoo and Fiesta de Reyes (be sure to eat at Casa de Reyes).

Thank you for a wonderful getaway!

Family trip

  • 5 of 5

This was a great house! We look my sister and 87 year old mother to San Diego to visit her sister for probably their last visit. The home had everything we needed and more. With exceptionally comfortable beds. Beautiful views off the deck, and amazing views of the fireworks every night from Sea World. We would definitely come back again, and highly recommend this home. We really enjoyed the bottle of wine left for us by the owners and all of the information about things to do and see in the area. We are all just a couple of states over, in New Mexico, so the drive there wasn't bad at all, with a stop in between in Phoenix. It was a great trip for my Mom. Can't wait to go back again. Thanks Mary & Jeffery.

Mission Hills is an elegant, upscale, historic neighborhood with its own village of coffee houses, restaurants, bars, and shops. Almost all of San Diego's most famous visitor attractions are within a five to ten minute drive away: numerous beaches, Mission Bay, Sea World, Balboa Park with its many museums, San Diego Zoo, the Gaslamp District, Downtown, Little Italy, the Convention Center, Petco Park, golf courses, numerous shopping centers, Historic Old Town, San Diego Harbor and waterfront, and the airport. It is a perfect central location with easy access to all freeways. The neighborhood itself is great for easy walking and biking, and other villages are close by with antique stores, thrift shops, eateries, music venues, wine bars, and more. From The Retreat it is an easy walk to two different lovely, safe parks for picnics and play as well as free family concerts during summer weeks. Mission Hills residents are friendly and inclusive, happy to share their incredible neighborhood with visitors. No location will feel safer, friendlier, more convenient, or more beautiful than this special area. The Retreat itself is in an especially exclusive and lovely Mission Hills cul 'd sac, directly across the street from a stunning historic Spanish mansion and just one of numerous gorgeous homes.
