We live in the United States and discovered Las Terrenas for ourselves in early 2012. I absolutely had to see LT for myself after reading this enchanting Caribbean Travel article . . .
A month or so later, we fell in love with LT almost the moment we crossed over the mountain range and saw the region's stunning natural beauty: miles and miles of pristine beaches, extremely lush palm forests and the deep blue Caribbean Sea. Incredible! Once in town, we were drawn to the cosmopolitan beach scene. TOP quality restaurants, french bakeries, cafes and countless beach bar options of all levels of sophistication. Also, it is great to have the option to take a bite out of a great nightlife scene on any given evening. Great discos (The Replay), Nightclubs (Gaia), Lounges (Mosquitos, One Love, Mojitos are just the start) and even the venerable Bodega promise much fun and memories!
After months of scouring and searching various places and locations with my outstanding realtor, it all came together perfectly when we saw Ventanas al Mar. The place is beautiful and the location could not be better.
I don't know why LT is still largely a secret in the US. I have a feeling with their new highway and international airport, LT and the surrounding Samana peninsula is poised to become a major vacation destination.

The New Fisherman's Village - The Hub of LT! It features over a dozen+ restaurants / clubs / cafes / lounges clustered together with beach-side dinning, and dancing a few hundred meters down the beach from Alisei.
Restaurants - Too many to name but easily over 25 featuring some of the best Italian, French, German, Swiss and local foods. (We have traveled throughout Europe and feel the dining experiences and atmosphere throughout LT are some of the best).
Affordability: The Dominican Republic represents an outstanding value for vacationers. We never felt anything was unreasonably priced, ever. Sometimes quite the opposite. It makes for a nice vacation when you feel you can splurge a little. One of the best indulgences we love is . . .
Vitality & Hospitality - The area boasts a tremendous mix of Italians, Germans, Swiss, French, Canadian and of course the great locals. Together it makes for a very vibrant, warm and welcoming area all along the beach scene.
Spa - Located 125 meters away in the incredibly beautiful Hotel Alisei.

Thanks for looking. We hope you are able to visit Las Terrenas and Ventanas al Mar soon!
We stayed at Ventanas al Mar with our 2 teenage boys for 6 nights. The condo was just as the pictures and description showed on Michael's listing. Alma and Jesus were wonderful property managers and great resources for activities, beaches and restaurants to try. Alma even helped us track down my husband's lost luggage and arranged a tour for us to El Limon Waterfalls. Each afternoon we would play a family game of Spike Ball on the beach across the street from Ventanas al Mar before walking to one of the nearby beach bars for happy hour! We truly enjoyed exploring all the local beaches to find the best ones for paddle boarding, skim boarding and boogie boarding. Las Terrenas has a wonderful selection of restaurants as well as a great French bakery and churro carts (our boy's favorite)! We look forward to returning to Las Terrenas and staying in Ventanas al Mar again in the future! Thank you Michael!
Beach Lovers from NH
This 2 bedroom apartment is splendidly located right across the street from the beach. good restaurants nearby. on the second floor with the pool and ocean view from the balcony which is large and lovely. everything worked and we were welcomed by nice people.
MIke is super at prepping you for the trip and a pleasure to work with. follow his directions from the airport and do stop at the rib place. our favorite restaurant and beach were 5 km away at Coson beach (Luis Parrillada) ...our g-kids liked the horseback ride on the beach. Mike's place is reasonably priced for all that you get, well stocked and supplied, and a great place to stay!
Just an absolutely gorgeous condo with a beautiful view! We loved the fact that part of the deck was covered so we could sit outside even during the rain, which we unfortunately had way too much during our stay. Kitchen was perfect for our needs and the bed was very comfortable. We only used the AC that was in the bedroom at night and left the windows open everywhere else. Very comfortable and no insects/mosquitoes whatsoever. We mostly walked to the restaurants but also rented an ATV for excursions. A very unique driving experience with scooters everywhere!! Excellent food wherever we went.
Alma was tremendous! Highly recommend!
Absolutely spectacular location and accommodations! Owner has thought of everything you could possibly want or need. Right on the beach and close to restaurants and shops (Fisherman's Village). Very spacious condo with everything that was important to us (pool w/ hot tub; WiFi; tv/NetFlix; plenty of parking; 24 hr. Security). Owner and property manager also very helpful with plenty of information about the area (places to go & things to do). Highly recommended - we'd go back tomorrow if we could !!
Owner also exceptionally responsive (he actually cares that you want for nothing ...).
I travelled to Las Terrenas with our four daughters and the plan was for my husband to join us a few days later. I rented a car through Travelocity and it was conveniently waiting for us when we arrived. The airport is small and easy to get around, even with four kids in tow.
We arrived at the condo with no problems with the directions given to us by Mike. We were met by Alma who showed us around the condo and gave me driving/walking directions to the important spots (grocery, etc). Driving was interesting with all the scooters and narrow streets but I adjusted easily.
My husband took sick and was unable to join us, but we always felt safe. The beach right outside the complex was beautiful and so easy to walk along to get to Fisherman's village (Lazy Dog for the fried shrimp, fish soup, and watermelon breezes; One Love; Terrenas; Cayuco were our favourites). Mojitos for the seafood ceviche ( I agree, Mike); XO for the passion fruit aperitif! We LOVED poking through the little shops in town and the street food was delicious.
Horseback riding down to El Limon; Zip lining at Runners; Surfing lessons at Playa Bonita at Pirata were some of our favourite excursions. We did not use the tours agencies, but it is easy to find any of these activities and more. We tipped the people who provided us with directions and we were even escorted to areas that may be hard to find. Alma's husband, Jesus, came to our rescue one night when I forgot the key inside the apartment. He was kind and jovial, despite being called out at a rather late hour. During the last few days of our stay, Semana Santa was underway. although the music was loud, it ended at midnight. We appreciated the backup generator during those evenings, as the music/lights for the parties obviously used up a lot of electricity. The influx of people was not a problem for us and we continued to feel safe in our guarded community. My girls loved the pool and it was convenient to be able to watch them from our huge veranda. They visited with the security guards who were always kind and helpful. We all loved the dogs who were plentiful but always well behaved and sweet. No begging, even in the restaurants. The streets were clean, safe, the people were helpful and kind and didn't mind spending the time with us in order to be understood. In a nutshell, we had the time of our lives and truly enjoyed having the condo as our landing point. Comfortable, beautiful, roomy! Marcie, Erica, Nadia, Katrina, and Ava
My friend and stayed here for 3 weeks and had such a great time! Plus, the pictures of the view from the terrace do not do it justice.......it's like being in the middle of a fabulous photo! And being just across the street from the Ocean lets you hear the waves, which is especially wonderful at night. The staff and owner are amazing in making sure that your vacation is everything you want it to be. And don't forget to do the whale watching in Samana. An enjoyable vacation is a definite given!!!
The Splendor of Las Terrenas & The Samaná Peninsula
A tiny ramshackle fishing village only 30 years ago, Las Terrenas has developed into one of the Dominican Republic’s most sought-after tourist centers. An influx of expatriates from North America and Europe has brought a wide array of guesthouses and restaurants, tailored to the independent traveler. But development has not ruined this welcoming seaside community’s relaxed atmosphere. Lying on the North Coast of the Samaná Peninsula, a lush strip of land pushing out into the Atlantic, the town is blessed by the proximity of some of the country’s most beautiful beaches and by spectacular countryside around. Extensive groves of coconut trees fringe expanses of white sand which slope gently and invitingly into clear warm water.
Top 10 Attractions
1. Playa Las Terrenas
Stretching a mile in either direction from the small town center, the attractive beach is clean and safe with ample shade. Heading westwards, Playa Cacao, close to small hotels and bars, is slightly more developed than the others.
Relatively unspoilt coral reefs lie close to Las Terrenas. Divers are attracted to nearby Playa Las Ballenas, where a group of small islands stand just offshore. There are many dive shops, such as Stellina Diving Center, and snorkel hire shops.
3. Beachside Restaurants
Spread along the beach either side of the main intersection are many top-rate but informal fish eateries. Fish with coconut is recommended. Early evenings are atmospheric with technicolor sunsets over the water.
Painted walls of a beachside restaurant
4. Haitian Art
Naïve Haitian art is widely available and is often mediocre and mass-produced. The Haitian Caraïbes Art Gallery has a good and reasonably-priced selection of wooden sculptures and voodoo-influenced images.
For a small town, Las Terrenas offers a surprising range of shopping opportunities, from the small modern mall to outlets along the main street. Bargains can be had by bartering with stall-holders, especially near the beaches.
Las Terrenas is rightly celebrated for its busy but laid-back after-dark ambience, particularly at weekends when locals and tourists mingle at an open-air street fair or visit its many bars.
7. Playa Bonita
The immaculate “Beautiful Beach” is fringed by coconut trees, in which guesthouses are hidden. Less crowded than Las Terrenas, and ideal for kids.
8. Playa Cosón
This isolated curve of powdery white sand, limpid water, and palm groves looks every bit the idyllic image of the tourist brochures. A couple of fishermen’s shacks sell cold drinks and grilled fish to this beach’s few visitors.
9. El Portillo Beach Club
One of the largest all-inclusive resorts, complete with its own airport, this complex offers various sporting and entertainment options. Day visitors can admire its beautiful beach from the bar.

Electricity Allowance - Please note it is standard practice for most all DR vacation rentals to provide an allowance for electricity usage. Electricity is rather expensive in the region. It helps protect owners who have guests that prefer to run the AC units throughout their stay. We offer a 10 KWh allowance per day. We charge $1.00 KWh for total usage beyond that amount during you stay. Any such overages are withheld from the security deposit. We are fortunate because the unit provides for natural oceanfront breezes complimented by ceiling fans throughout, including the terrace. As such it is rare that any overages occur. Thank you for your understanding in advance!
Lastly, my wife and I truly love Las Terrenas! The Samana peninsula is full of many natural gems, eco tourism destinations and great local spots to visit. I always enjoy consulting a bit with our guests and sharing a running list of travel notes that we think can help get you settled and enjoying Las Terrenas right away!
