About the property

Enjoy a cozy, relaxing rural setting in a reclaimed prairie style cabin.

So glad you found us! Dancing Fox is hibernating now for the winter months, but we will be open again mid May 2018. Please read about the cabin and book your reservations early to save your dates.

Dancing Fox is in keeping with our circa 1842 farmstead home ambiance. Often early settlers would erect a simple prairie style cabin on the same property prior to building a more permanent home and Dancing Fox Cabin is a reflection and our vision of one of those early structures, yet features the comforts we all enjoy.

With it’s rural locale setting, barn wood exterior cladding, interior walls sheathed in white-washed 1800s boards, wide-plank pine flooring, hand-made cabinetry with vintage chalkboard counter tops and barn beam framing…you will be enveloped by the subtle feelings of our pioneers, a sense of soothing well-being and one of a simpler more calmer lifestyle yet features all your modern amenities.

The Dancing Fox Cabin is your opportunity to experience what most lodging in Ohio doesn't offer. Imagine as you follow its pathway to your front porch, stepping across the threshold of an original swinging barn door and upon entry you'll begin feasting your eyes, spirit and senses upon … another time and another place.

Our settler-style cabin may become an unforgettable highlight during your visit to our area. Our initial goal was to utilize in the building process as many reclaimed, recycled, vintage and antique materials as possible in the construction of this self-built structure. To this end result, we were quite successful. We estimate that approximately 95% of its total materials have been salvaged and re-purposed from various sources in northern Ohio! The blending of all these various components into a harmonious finished product is one that is memorable, soothing, and yet to many, exciting. As different as the exterior’s first impression may be, the cabin’s interior is where your visual senses will be captivated. Wherever your eyes and hands rove you will discover subtly aged textures, hand created items and coordinated color palettes that enhance the feelings of subtle rustic relaxation. These time worn nuances now re-shed their light from simpler by-gone days and are captured by our cabin’s cozy comfortable environment. The lasting effect is one you won't forget. “Memories are made at Dancing Fox Cabin.”

Our cabin resides behind our 1842 farm home on our “off the beaten path” farmland environment with plenty of privacy which removes you from both the heavy traffic and people congestion normally associated with other vacation rentals. Our centralized location is very convenient to the multitudes of attractions, events and activities found throughout the entire north central Ohio region. Lake Erie’s south shore, Cedar Point Amusement Park, fishing, boating, antique shops and flea markets, dining, golfing, historical attractions, wineries and festivals are all within quick and easy driving distances. Major highways such as the Ohio 80/90 Turnpike, U.S. State Rt. 20 and others are practically at your doorstep and conveniences for groceries and other necessities are only minutes away.

Another lodging alternative is our circa 1842 Harpster-Davenport Guest House located on the same property featuring an upscale farmhouse private apartment.

About Janell Davenport

One of life’s most exciting pleasures is creating unique lasting memories for our guests. As travelers ourselves, we seek out the creative and unique lodging experiences, one that will be remembered, talked about and shared with others for years to come. Knowing the history of our 1842 home and understanding how families lived while building their main family home such as ours, we decided to share and offer an experience to others. For over a year, we scoured, gathered and tore down a building here and there to locate salvaged materials, re-purposed items, and gently used pieces and parts from various locations throughout our 4 county area. After we felt we had enough materials gathered, the challenging process of building began. After 1.5 years of non-stop hard work, not to mention the creative thinking that had to go into the building process to make all the parts and pieces fit and come together, Dancing Fox was born and we absolutely love it! To us, it's a treasure trove of local history, stories and ourselves. We promise, you will remember Dancing Fox Cabin too.

What makes this cabin unique

One-of-kind cabin in Ohio and rated in the top 10 in the United States for being highly re-purposed, eco-friendly and being a usable accommodation with all the creature comforts.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Janell and Paul,

I want to thank you for your hospitality this past weekend. We really loved the cabin and all the history behind it! I wish we were able to spend more time enjoying the cabin and the beautiful surroundings. I will definitely love to make it back some time. We also took your suggestion and ate dinner at your local golf course. We loved the food and the atmosphere. The boys liked it so much that they wanted to go back Sunday to eat there again :D

I hope you guys have an awesome season! May God continue to bless you!

Another example is the bathroom vanity base cabinet we handmade from early 1900’s Wormy Chestnut and features a porcelain counter top surface once from an old Hoosier cupboard along with a re-purposed sink. The shower stall walls are sheathed with large antique slate chalkboards formerly used to teach children in a local 1892 school house. On the wall above the commode you will find an antique handmade wall cupboard filled with soft plush towels and you'll see a vintage wood farm ladder is used as a towel bar. An abundance of clothing hooks adorn the walls and door’s interior. *And for your convenience, there is a working commode and plenty of hot and cold running water! *smiles...just having fun with ya'll* All the amenities are modern and you will enjoy plenty of hot water too!
  • 1 Bedroom, Sleeps 5
  • Bedroom 1 - 2 bunk bed , Comfortable Queen Log Bunk Beds
  • There isn't a traditional walled off private bedroom in Dancing Fox's unique interior layout, however the open concept lends a feeling of airiness and is historically proper for simple cabin construction designs during early settlement days. The log framed queen size bunk bed is the dominant focal point of the cabin’s bedroom area. At one side of the bed is a handmade wardrobe clad with antique barn siding with plentiful wall hooks, shelving with baskets and a clothing rod available for hanging clothes. Resting at the foot of the log bed is a vintage cedar trunk for additional storage and an original dry sink cupboard with shelves as well. From this open and undefined bedroom area you be able to freely converse with others in the cabin, watch the flat screen TV or fireplace and peer outside from the many windows scattered throughout the cabin.

Cabin Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Truly an amazing getaway. The fully functional cabin was well constructed from historical and handmade materials decorated with antiques. A detailed labor of love. I spent 3 very restful nights. The well water was excellent. The cake was yummy. My grand girls enjoyed playing in the yard with the swing under the pergola, flowers in the cottage garden, listening to the rain on the metal roof, ringing the dinner bell, making breakfast, and hearing the spirit of the Dancing Fox. Watching the sun rise over the farmers field, listening to the birds sing happiness while enjoying my coffee sitting on the porch in early morning hours before the girls arose will be the most peaceful memory as I trudge back to work today. This place is magical. Thank you

Owner's Response: Peggy, It makes me so happy you enjoyed Dancing Fox with your grand girls. Life gets away from us so quickly and having a little respite time to refuel our mind, body and soul while enjoying precious time with loved ones is exactly what we hope for. I posted the photos of you and the girls on our Dancing Fox Facebook page and the flower garden picture of them is absolutely adorable. Thank you for your kind words Peggy and taking the time to write your thoughts about your stay. Please come back and see us again and perhaps you will be able to stay a little longer next time. PS...glad you loved the well water, we do too! All The Best Always, Janell

Janell is an incredible host! Warm personal welcome then backed away to let us enjoy our experience privately. Would have given us a personal send off too but was sick for two days. But that didn't stop her from calling us to wish us well.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the kind words. When the time comes we are allowed to get away for a few days, many times my guests are in much need of privacy and quiet times. It gives me joy knowing you felt undisturbed while staying at the cabin and I also appreciate you expressing that to me. Thank You. When you come back again to Bellevue to see family, my door is always open for you both. All The Best! Janell
