About Jon Young

Owners Jon & Helene have been in hospitality for over 20 years. Jon is a restaurateur & chef, and Helene is an international flight attendant and a former Chicago Architectural Foundation river cruise docent.

Jon Young purchased this apartment in 1997

Why Jon Young chose Chicago

We have been neighborhood residents for 15 years and have not only enjoyed raising a family while seeing a positive transformation of Chicago during that time, but also of the Roscoe Village neighborhood and its amenities. We own and operate two award-winning and acclaimed restaurants here, and realized we had the ideal setting for a bed & breakfast style vacation rental conveniently located right in the heart of our community.

What makes this apartment unique

Guests have immediate access to more than a dozen dining options to fit any budget, pretty sidewalk cafes & hidden backyard garden patios all just a few blocks away on Roscoe Street, as well as unique independently owned retail shops & boutiques (also a Starbucks nearby in a converted former Motorcycle Cafe 'The Ace Cafe').

Within walking distance there are family friendly parks, a baseball diamond, public pool, and a park district field house (offering tennis courts & a basketball court), as well as kayaking and canoeing nearby .

The neighborhood is extremely walk-able, upper-middle class and safe, has seen a wave of renovations over the last decade, the neighborhood also boasts a 100+ year old Pencil Factory that has been converted to lofts, with original factory-worker row houses still intact located on adjacent blocks.

Public transportation is super easy and just a half block away there is access to the Belmont Avenue Bus (access to the Red, Brown & Blue Lines), the Western Avenue Bus (Blue Line to Wicker Park/Bucktown & The Loop), plus the Addison Street Bus (direct to Wrigley Field - Home of the Cubs) just four blocks away.

If you visit us in the summer, Wrigley Field is just a 20 - 30 minute walk (about a two miles) through residential neighborhoods and tree lined streets, filled with 100 year old + houses. The guest suite is also located a short walk from our wine bar, Volo. It is beautifully designed w/ an urban chic interior and rustic hidden backyard cabana garden in which we from time to time host weddings.

Additionally, directly across the street from Volo is our celebrated casual brunch spot, Kitsch'n On Roscoe. Decked out in colorful 1970's retro dinette sets, and filled with assorted retro and vintage decor, Kitsch'n has been featured in Bon Apetit Magazine and on $40 a Day with Rachel Ray.

Finally, in warmer months, you & your guests have private access to a beautiful shaded 600 sq. ft. garden patio w/table, chairs, grill & more.

Awesome location

  • 4 of 5

We found this location to be especially great for traveling with two small kids. It's close to a very nice grocery store and many parks. The locals were quite friendly and always happy to recommend things to do in the area.

A very nice apartment on a quiet street, with convenient parking and public transportation.

  • 5 of 5

Jon's place is clean, well-maintained, well decorated, and has all appropriate accessories for the kitchen and bath. Sheets and towels are in very good condition. The sitting area is comfortable and pleasant. The kitchen is nice, although counter space is perhaps a bit limited. All appliances work well. Although it is a lower level apartment - a few steps down from street level - the windows in the front room let in plenty of light.

My only concern is that the bedrooms are very small. The queen beds are in good condition, but the rooms are only about 2 feet wider, and perhaps 4-5 feet longer, than the beds. My wife slept on the side near the door, and had adequate access, but I slept on the side next to the wall, and had to crawl in and out from the foot of the bed. I’m 65, so am not as agile as I once was, and also 6’ 2” tall. Getting in and out of the bed at night to use the bathroom was not particularly easy for me, and I also felt somewhat confined being right next to the walls on the side and head of the bed. This was only a minor problem for me, and my son, who is younger (obviously!) and shorter than I am slept in the other bedroom with his wife, and had no concerns. However, someone who has significant weight or mobility issues would have more difficulty, and should be aware of this issue.

We found a convenient place to park on the street when we first arrived, and then used the bus and subway to get around after that. This worked out very well for us. We didn’t notice many open parking spaces on the street during the rest of our stay, though, so that might be an issue if you’re not as lucky as we were. The street the apartment is on is very quiet. The bus is on a parallel street, only a short walk away, and takes you straight to the Red, Brown, and Purple line station, so using public transportation is easy.

Jon checked on us to be sure everything was OK, and then stayed out of the way. We didn’t need anything from him during our stay, but my impression was that he would have been easily available if we had. Overall, this is a great place to stay, with the size of the bedrooms being the only possible issue.

Very cozy with good beds in a quiet convenient location

  • 4 of 5

The on site administrator was available whenever we had a question which we appreciated. The only problem we had was a musty order (it is a basement/garden level apartment and it was a hot period in summer) but running the A/C helped control that pretty well. The beds were very comfortable and the kitchen was nicely set up with coffee available to make. We also enjoyed sitting in the yard for breakfast! The accomodations were very quiet! Thanks so much for sharing your home!

Loved this place!!

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying in Roscoe Village! This suite was perfect for my husband and me, and our two adult daughters. After busy days of sightseeing in downtown Chicago, it was a short drive back to "our" quiet, friendly neighborhood. We loved roaming around, looking at the homes and trying various restaurants and shops. Our accommodations were clean, well-equipped, and comfortable, and Jon was highly responsive to any questions.

Super Convenient Location and Helpful Hosts!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed at this great garden level apartment during our city adventure. Super flexible and responsive hosts made our stay stress free and pleasant. I would highly recommend this location for people who want to stay near the city, but still want to feel a part of a neighborhood. Although we didn't bring our kids for this trip, this would be a perfect spot for them.
