About Barbara and Jon Robin
We traveled to Maine for the very first time in August, 2012. We drove most of the coast line from Ogunquit to Eastport and fell in love with the state. We came back in September and visited Swans Island and knew we wanted to have a home there. We bought the home in October and spent 10 days there over the Thanksgiving holiday. We travel back each spring and fall for a few months, but will let you enjoy the house in the summer and see why we fell in love with the island!
Barbara and Jon Robin purchased this House in 2012
Why Barbara and Jon Robin chose Swans Island
The location of this home with Back Cove on one side and a quiet lagoon on the other side made this the perfect choice for us. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, want to stop, listen and not hear anything, then this is the place for you. Read a book on the deck or borrow one of the books on the book case. Play board games in the evening, hike wooded trails, dig clams, watch the Lobstermen bring in their catch or sleep the day away on the deck...it's all here. Yet, you are a 30 minute ferry ride from Bass Harbor and Mt. Desert Island. It's not home away from home, it's 'relax away from home'!
What makes this House unique
The views from the house and deck make you wake up every morning and think you are in paradise! The low tides are just as pretty as the high tides! Seeing the sea gulls swoop down, pick up a clam or mussel, then fly high over the big boulders that line the shoreline and drop them to crack them open and then eat them is mesmerizing! We like to follow one bird and see where they pick their clam and then guess which boulder they will fly to, drop and eat! We chose this property over others due to the serene location and ocean views. Make sure you check out Fine Sand Beach, the Quarry swimming hole and TIMS take out - Friday night is pizza night, but order early! Goose Pond is about a mile walk…some may want to crest the ridge behind it for the view of the Atlantic and walk down to the ocean beach. Hike to Noah's Ballast and enjoy the views of Frenchboro! Check out the bold coast on High Head Beach on the east side of the island. Make the short drive to Hockamock Head Lighthouse. The views are amazing and you will want to see it at low tide and high tide to experience the crashing waves. There are several trails around the lighthouse that take you to 2 different beaches. Want to dig clams or muscles? Wait for low tide and look for the small holes in the sand! Grab a shovel and start digging!!

This gem of a house is situated on a small peninsula with gorgeous views of the ocean. We enjoyed our morning coffee from a couple different seating areas overlooking the water - the house also has a good sized deck to bbq on, dine, or simply relax. The house comes with plenty of books, puzzles and board games as well. We visited fine sand beach, Irish point beach, and the carrying place beach - all have excellent shell/rock collecting and barely anyone else on the beaches. This was one of our favorite family vacations yet - (even preferred over last year's Disney vacation!) We will definitely book again.
Beautiful spot and home. The lagoon was quite active with fish and birds. Loved cooking in the kitchen with the movie screen sized window into the forest. There is plenty of privacy and secret spots to enjoy. The lagoon was warm enough to swim in. Allaghash rock is a fun hangout rock and fishing spot. And, it’s pretty close to blue rock trail. Excellent game collection! Very fun house, especially for kids. Thanks for the opportunity to enjoy your home.
Photos can’t do it justice
The Robin house is a gem! This comfortable, charming, well stocked home was spacious enough for our group of 11. (And kitchen was a delight for this foodie to cook in🙂.) And the property! A stunning slice of heaven! The serene ocean waters, the ever changing lagoon, the wooded outdoor reading books made this place pure therapy. My family enjoyed dining and reading on the deck, stomping in the lagoon during low tide, putting our kayaks into the ocean right from the property, and even holding our own yoga class on the path to allagash rock. Our time at Robin House is now treasured memories that we’ll recall fondly all our lives.
It’s hard to believe that the photos of Robin House don’t do it justice, but it’s true. It’s hard to convey how spectacular the setting is, and how open the house is to it. It’s so spacious and filled with light. It’s also extremely well maintained, clean, well stocked and comfortable. We’ve been renting houses for 20 years, in all sorts of places, and I would consider this a luxury rental.
Our days were spent hanging out at the house, doing puzzles, hiking trails, climbing rocks, visiting TIMS for pies and seafood.... it was ideal.
The only downside was having to leave. We considered hiding out in the bunk room and hoping the next family wouldn’t notice us there. However, we foolishly decided to act like grow ups and do the responsible thing and hand it over.
Robin House Family Vacation
We absolutely love Swan’s Island, and we love the Robin House at Island Retreat! We vacationed there this Summer for the second time of six Swan’s Island trips, now with our expanding family. We were with our five children and 6 grandchildren, and the size and family oriented layout is perfect. The Littles love the bunk room, the preteen loved her own loft. Going out to Allagash Rock and swimming and kayaking in the cove. The kitchen is the most well-equipped we’ve ever experienced in our travels. If there is a problem (almost never) it is fixed virtually right away. Thank you, John and Barbara, for a wonderful week. We really hope we’ll be able to come back! Catharine and Richard Geib.
Glad you had a good time! Hope to see you again soon!
Stunning views, impeccable house!
The Robin House is the perfect vacation home, well maintained and clean! The kitchen is well-equipped and beautiful! The views from the deck are amazing and perfect for grilling, eating, and lounging. Our kids really loved the bunk room. The property is private yet close to the beaches and TIMS :-) We had a fun week spending time in nature...hiking, canoeing, fishing and swimming.
Alcohol cannot be purchased on the island, but can be brought onto the island. There is a small grocery/convenience store on the island for basics. You will want to do your shopping prior to getting on the ferry. Both Ellsworth and Bar Harbor have large grocery stores.
