Minimum of 4 night rental required. This unit is managed by the owner of unit #9.
I am owner of unit #9 and have known the owner of unit #2 since I was a child in Illinois. I am acting rental manager for him. He is now a resident of Belize and lives in one of the other Oasis del Caribe units.
Jan Johnson purchased this condo in 2000
The owner has lived on Ambergris Caye for over 25 years and loves the location of Oasis del Caribe. It is close enough to all of the main San Pedro attractions yet resides in a quiet neighborhood.
Double Booked Condo
When we arrived, we found someone in the condo already. The owner had mistakenly double booked the room. The owner was not present, but had a friend running it for him. We were able to track him down, and after a few phone calls, they put us up in a 2nd floor condo for a day, which was very clean, nice and had a wonderful view. It was still inconvenient because we could not unpack and had to transfer all our luggage to the proper condo the next day. The owner compensated us for our troubles and we were satisfied with the outcome.
When we moved into the proper condo, I noticed mosquitoes smashed on the walls. This was a bad sign. Over the course of the next 3 days, I smashed over 80 mosquitoes. They would hide in the drapes, furniture, closet, etc, and come out when it was dark. We slept in terror. My 3-year old daughter woke up with more than 10 bites on her face. She looked like she had been punched because her eye was red and swollen shut. I finally resorted to putting her inside a tent that I had brought. The rest of us slept under the covers. The owners gave us antihistamine cream, mosquito pesticide coils to burn in the rooms, and sprayed all the bushes around the pools. By day 3, most of the mosquitoes had been killed.
The air conditioning refused to work for about 1.5 days. Someone came and got it working again.
The Condo Furnishings
Overall, the condo was OK. After being in Condo 9 which was so nice, Condo 2 was a bit of a let down. Furnishings were tired and run down. Just the bare minimum of supplies, no extra toilet paper.
The location is great. There is a grocery store just out back, and a very cheap, very yummy chinese/fried chicken fast food shack across the street. Down the beach was our favorite spot to eat, Melt's. The whole staff knew our two little girls by name. And the food was amazing, both breakfast and lunch (and I don't hand out compliments easily!). Palapa tours is located just in front and can handle all your snorkeling needs.
My husband and I, along with our son and daughter-in-law stayed, at Oasis #2 from April 30 - May 8 and we couldn't have found a better property (or time) for our vacation. Due to an unexpected illness we actually spent more time in the condo than planned, but it was so comfortable and inviting that it didn't seem like a sacrifice. If anything, the air conditioner worked too well! The pool and grounds were unbelievably clean and well maintained, and other than some very enthusiastic youngsters a few times we had it to ourselves a good deal of the time. It was perfectly located as well, with a small grocery store a block away, the ocean literally just steps in front of us, the best massage on the Caye just down the street and an easy walk to almost every place we wanted to go. The hardware store a couple of blocks down gave us a great deal on a golf cart rental, plus they took us to the airport the day we departed! We had a fabulous time going bottom fishing, snorkeling, snuba diving (next time it will be scuba, which is a much more freeing experience). Would we go back? Well, my son wants to move to Belize:-) My husband and I loved it but we only have so many years left to travel and about 10,000 places we want to visit. But I'd love to find a place like this to stay wherever we end up! A million thanks to Jan, the property manager, she told us everything we needed to know to make the most of our stay. And two million thanks to the Belize people, who are so warm and friendly that we felt like we had friends wherever we went. Best vacation my son has ever had, we've wet his appetite for tropical vacations!
The location was great and the setting perfect.
We were very comfortable, like at home and more.
I highly recommande the place.
Great location (away from downtown noise but close enough to walk to the action) - clean, and full of very friendly people. There were 3 of us, my wife and I along with our adult daughter. My daughter and I came for the diving and were not disappointed. I highly recommend diving with "Chuck and Robbie's" - they are a 5 minute walk down the beach. Very professional group with good equipment. The only issue with diving here (Ambergris) is that you can have your dives cancelled due to high winds. 2 days before we arrived were cancelled and the last 2 days we were here were cancelled (as the seas are just to rough to get back into the boat). Having said that, we had a spectacular dive on day 2 where 5 dolphins decided to stop by and play with us for about 15 minutes.
As for the town, it is typical 3rd world surroundings, but never had a "bad" meal even eating "street meat" from local vendors. If you stay here, I would advise renting a golf cart as it is just a lot easier to get to/from town for eating and groceries. The grocery store that is literally 10 steps from the back of the condo complex rents carts at a reasonable rate. As for groceries - we recommend Richies (just a 5 minute walk south of the condo). You definitely need to get to the Palapa bar (north - over the bridge). A palapa that sits out in the ocean where you can sit up top and look over the ocean or sit down below in an inner tube where they will lower your drinks to you in a bucket.
Looking for some evening fun - head down to the Thursday night " Chicken Drop" on the beach next door to Calientes. Get there by 5:45 if you plan on placing a bet, as the line starts to get long by 6:00.
Overall - great experience, great diving, great condo - we would stay hear again in a heartbeat.
This condo is in a great location you are withing walking distance to everything. The condo itself was very spacious. There were four single people staying and we had plenty of room for all our things and never felt crowded. It has everything that you would need to prepare meals and enjoy your stay. It is close to stores - use Ritchies just a short 10 min walk down the beach for groceries, but You also have a store just out the back for things needed quickly ( a little higher priced). We used David Gonzales from Caribbean Adventures on Middle Street by the traffic circle (next to Ritchies). He and Minor were wonderful! They made our snorkeling trip fun, we were able to see Manatees, Nurse Sharks, Rays and all kinds of fish. Just up the beach a 2 minute walk is a wonderful Massage - Miss Shirlene will treat you just right. Excellent value for your money. Overall I would say it was a perfect location and a perfect vacation. Thank you Jan for all you did, the condo was fantastic.
