Santa Chiara is the name of an old 17th century convent recently completely restored. It is a unique holiday destination- a small hilltop country estate located at the gates of Siena. Only fifteen minutes walk from the Campo, the shell-shaped mediaeval square at the heart of the city in which the Palio is run twice a year.
It is a big building with three apartments other than the owner's home. The welcoming accommodation is set in five hectares of beautiful garden offering stunning views of both the medieval city and the surrounding countryside. Guests can walk the estate and relax in the shade of its many trees, swim in the large outdoor pool, enjoy a game of tennis on the private court, and dine al fresco against the backdrop of the beautiful tuscan landscape.
Early in the morning, it is not unusual to run into pheasants, hares and deer. In your wandering, make sure not to miss a gigantic holm oak whose branches almost touch the ground, thus creating a large natural dome. Further down the road, you can cross a little bridge and get to a wide public area where you can find exercise equipment as well as a playground for children.
Olive trees are a feature the grounds, and this theme also run through the properties with furnishing as of olive wood, bathroom products made from olive extract and the estate’s olive oil available to purchase for the dinner table.

We stayed three weeks here and loved every minute! The apartment was well equipped and furnished. The brand new bathroom fixtures were a nice surprise. The grounds were beautiful with lots of flowers and shrubbery with delightful outdoor eating/sitting areas and well maintained. It was very quiet and totally relaxing. Anna was a very gracious host and accommodating. We thoroughly enjoyed her welcome present of salami, olive oil and a loaf of bread. It is very close to Porta Romano and a 15 minute walk to Il Campo. We were there without a car and found it very convenient with shopping and bus stops close by. Siena is a beautiful city full of wonderful treasures and "big hills"! The Duomo is one of the most beautiful in the world and we would recommend getting the audio guide. We didn't find a bad restaurant but two of our favorites were Fori Porta on Via Claudio Tolomei, 1 (10 - 15 minute walk from apartment) and Antico Osteria da Divo, Via Franciosa, 29.
Perfect for Siena and surrounding area. Very comfortable accommodation.
We stayed in Apartment 3 for just over a month and loved it. the apartment is tastefully decorated and spacious. The bathroom is large and had a strong shower with plenty of hot water. The master bedroom was a good size with lots of closet space and plenty of sunlight. We enjoyed the sunrise peeking through the window along with the occasional cat!
There were just two of us until my partner's son & daughter arrived and shared the extra twin bed room. There was still plenty of space for four people.
The wifi was consistent and strong, even with 4 people on at a time. We had a car which was great for exploring the surrounding towns, but the location is perfect if you don't have a car and just want to walk into Siena - 7 minutes to Porta Romana and 12 minutes to the Campo. Claudia and Anna were very accommodating and made us feel like family. AND, Claudia is a registered tour guide which makes it easy to walk out your door and explore the city with excellent knowledge & ease.
Their home is truly a home away from home and an oasis from the bustling little city. Quiet, safe and peaceful after busy days exploring. We'll be back for sure!
Santa Chiara is a uniquely located country estate on a hillside just outside the walls of Siena, with views towards the city on one side and over the Tuscan countryside on the other. It is about 15 minutes walk from the Campo, the shell-shaped mediaeval square at the heart of the city in which the Palio is run twice a year. With a large swimming pool in beautiful surroundings, the property offers relaxation as well as an ideal base for exploring the city. Situated as it is in the centre of Tuscany, many other beautiful and historic places are also accessible by car. Florence and San Gimignano are both within an hour’s drive. Arezzo and Lake Trasimeno are not much farther. The hill towns of ‘the Chianti’ as well as Montepulciano and Pienza are easily accessible. For the more adventurous, Assisi and Perugia are farther afield (100 km or so) but a good dual carriageway road makes them an easy day trip. Few other properties can offer the same combination of a relaxing poolside holiday
