About the property

In the midst of the Bay of Islands, you will find our quaint little hideaway where you can escape back to nature. Our Island is 2 acres of breath taking scenery, located approximately 5 minutes by boat from where you will park your car at Whitefish Falls. We will be waiting dockside to transport you to our Island.

We have chosen to develop the Island off grid but supply all normal amenities with a combination of solar panels, propane and whisper generator running intermittently when required by guests.

The island has predominant 80 to 100 year old white pine with a variety of other trees which include birch, oak, maple, cedar and one spruce, along with wild blueberry bushes. July is typically the season for wild blueberries but it can vary.

There is great swimming right off the dock and if canoeing or kayaking is your forte, this is the perfect location. The surrounding area is noted for great fishing, pickerel, pike, bass, perch and pan fish have been caught right off the island. The sunrises and sunsets here are indescribable, you simply have to see them. It is an artists and or photographers dream!

The backdrop to our island is the famous La Cloche Mountain Range. These mountains are located in the Canadian Shield, they are composed primarily of white

quartzite, and this was a renowned area for the famous Group of Seven Painters. You can make your time here whatever you desire it to be. A great vacation for two couples, a romantic getaway for one couple, a yoga retreat, or a chance to be alone with your thoughts, to paint, photograph nature at its best, compose music, poetry or just settle in with a selection of your favorite books.

You are the sole occupants on the island which allows for complete privacy.

The Main Cottage is a renovated circular farm grain bin surrounded with decks. It is complimented with a cobblestone addition. The cobblestones to build this addition were hand gathered directly off the island. You have incredible views from the decks and this is where you will view amazing sunsets. There is an outdoor kitchen with a propane barbecue with adjoining counter and sink with hot and cold running water.

On the main floor of the circular grain bin there is local red pine flooring accented with handmade Mexican tile. There is a living/dining area which includes a kitchen with cooking facilities and a full size sink. There is a semi circular stair to the loft bedroom that has local cedar plank flooring with a queen size bed. There is handmade Mexican tile throughout the cobble stone addition which includes a full size propane fridge, desk and storage area. The shower with hand painted Mexican tile and vanity shelf are in a separate room from the sink and toilet allowing privacy for both.

The Guest accommodation is a replica of a circa 1800 sheep wagon with sleeping accommodation for two in a double bed as was the tradition at that time. You will wake up to light filtering through a beautiful stained glass window.

There is an outdoor washroom with a flush toilet and sink with hot and cold running water. You must experience the circular Bamboo outdoor shower with both hot and cold running water.

On the lower deck, where you will view the sunrises there is a wood tub for those of you that don't wish to swim in the lake.

You may bring surf boards , paddle boards , kayaks, canoes etc.,there are 3 kayaks and a 2 person canoe available for exploring the area by water, to experience nature and take in the sound of the Loons. It is approximately one mile by water to Whitefish Falls, where you can purchase basic supplies along with many flavors of ice cream.

The Island and the area are referred to as a dark sky area. The minimal reflection of light from towns allows an unbelievable experience to view stars much like the original inhabitants of the area experienced before hydro and lights dominated our world.

There is much to see and experience in the immediate area at Whitefish Falls. It was home to one of the first hydro producing plants. You can see the ruins of that original plant with its water spillways, and imagine how it changed lives years ago.

There is a Bar/Restaurant in Whitefish Falls that has wing night on Thursday and on Friday they serve local Whitefish. There is a very quaint coffee/lunch cafe in a renovated historic building which was once a former Church.

If you wish to bring your own runabout, there is lots of dock space at the Island and a boat launch ramp at Whitefish Falls. For travelling to and from the Island and all your water sports such as kayaking and canoeing, you should bring your own personal life jackets.

For area experiences, there is a tour boat that runs out of Little Current all summer to Bay Finn, Killarney and the Benjamin Islands, if time permits for a day adventure. On Manitoulin Island, both Little Current, with its waterfront shops and marina and Kagawong, with the fudge shop, museum and Bridal Veil Falls make a great day trip.

There are 2 basic routes to get to our Island: from Sudbury go west on Hwy #17 and south on Hwy #6 to Whitefish Falls: from Tobermoy take the famous Chi Cheemaun ferry ( 2 hour trip) (bar and restaurant and gift shop on board) to South Baymouth reservations for the ferry are recommended then take Hwy #6 North to Whitefish Falls .

If you are coming from Sudbury you will go through Espanola there are two large grocery stores located here. This is where you may obtain your weekly grocery supplies. We suggest that you bring coolers to transport refrigerated items until you arrive at the Island. Coming from South Baymouth to Little Current there are also two grocery stores. Again coolers are suggested to keep your items refrigerated.

About John Gillespie

A lot of my employment has been on the Great Lakes, most recently assisting as a tour boat captain, proceeding that as a commercial tug boat captain.

This employment along with sailing in my leisure time has developed into a great enjoyment of being on and around the water.

In 2004 I purchased an undeveloped Island in the Bay of Islands called Island C.

Over the years I have been fortunate to have made friends with many talented people "Masters of their Craft" , who with their unique skills have turned Island C into a very special place we would now like to share .

John Gillespie purchased this cottage in 2004

Why John Gillespie chose Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands

My brother and I traveled to Manitoulin Island from Sudbury to look at a special breed of horses. This trip took us through the La Cloche Mountains and Whitefish Falls. I was awestruck by the beauty of the rock formations in the area. I returned home and on the internet found two private islands for sale in the immediate area of Whitefish Falls and the rest is history.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had the pleasure of staying here in July 2017. We stayed in the main cottage which was cozy and very clean. One of the many highlights during our stay was watching the sunrise on the deck while drinking our morning coffee and the beautiful clear night skies along with the magnificent sunsets. The queen size bed with the cotton sheets made it so easy to snuggle in and fall asleep at night while listening to the waves lapping on the shore below.

We had the option of cooking our meals inside the cottage or outdoors on the propane barbeque and we experienced both. The outdoor kitchen with hot and cold running water just makes cooking and clean up a breeze. The shower inside the main cottage is tastefully decorated with original Mexican tile it is quite large with a bench. The fact that it is completely separate from the toilet and sink is such a nice touch!

We spent a lot of time reading and just relaxing although we also enjoyed using the canoe and kayaking around the island. The main cottage has a comfortable leather love seat and there is a DVD player along with a collection of movies and a small flat screen TV which came in handy on cool or rainy evenings. Even though one does not want rain on their vacation we had a big thunder storm one evening. The light show and the whole ambiance of the experience is incredible.

The outdoor shower and the outdoor flush toilet were also accessible for us to use and after using the outdoor shower you simply don’t want to shower indoors AMAZING!!!! The outdoor cooling tub is a wonderful addition especially since one of us could not swim. It afforded the opportunity to cool off without jumping in the lake.

We cannot say enough good things about John our host he answered all our questions and more! Any problems or questions we had he was very accessible. He transported us to and from the island to the mainland when it was prearranged. However you can canoe or kayak to the main land it isn’t far. The boat traffic around the island is not heavy at all compared to some other cottage country areas.

There are also many things to see and do in the areas of Whitefish Falls and Little Current. Cute shops in Little Current and nice restaurants both in Whitefish Falls and Little Current. The boat tour out of Little Current – North Channel Cruise Lines is a must for a day trip.

I would highly recommend this place it is so welcoming very comfortable, clean and cozy. The only bad thing we can say it is ours

This island is the perfect getaway; close enough to Whitefish Falls to be convenient but far enough out to ensure complete privacy and quiet. The small silo cottage is adorable! In good weather we dine on the west facing deck and watch the gorgeous sunsets. On all of our trips to the island we stayed in the covered sheep wagon which is extremely comfortable. The outdoor washroom with flush toilet is close by and we loved the outdoor shower. We caught bass and northern pike off the island. The natural little harbour makes docking safe and easy. The island is an ideal retreat for two couples or one couple. We simply cannot wait until we go back again. Highly recommended!!

Loved it!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 had a terrific time at the island! We stayed 4 nights and enjoyed every minute: swimming around the island, dipping in the hot tub, watching videos on a rainy day and sleeping in the sheep caravan. John even took us sailing around the island!

Perfect tranquil getaway! Modern amenities in a setting full of character and charm.

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I visited from Savannah, GA, along with a friend from the Toronto area. John was the perfect host from the get go! He contacted us prior to our visit to answer any questions and made us feel very comfortable regarding our stay. John met us at a local, small marina and taxied us with ample luggage to the island about a mile away.

The island was everything and more than we expected! The short trail up from the boat was beautiful and well kept, kayaks and canoes for our use, charming outdoor area with wood stove. Lots of deck space surrounding the house for morning coffee or a glass of wine in the evening! Inside, beautiful hand painted, Mexican tiles in the kitchen and bathroom (shower is very large and completely tiled! Seperate room with sink and toilet!) Loft upstairs was easily accessible for my husband and myself, nice dresser and extra bedding in antique trunk.

My friend was very happy to stay in the sheep wagon! Extremely well designed and comfortable with a beautiful stained glass window and tv for watching videos. Amazing views outside of wagon, cafe table and chairs set up. We enjoyed morning coffee here while my husband fished down below.

My friend felt very comfortable and safe in the wagon. The outdoor toilet and seperate shower are very posh! We all enjoyed showering in the outdoor shower with large raindrop style shower head!

The deck and fresh water tub are near by. We spent several evenings on the deck. Very comfortable lounge chairs that lean completely horizontal if you wish to nap!

We had never kayaked prior to our visit, but had so much fun circling the island and felt very safe!

John was always just a text away. He picked us up when requested and answered any questions regarding the property immediately. He was a wonderful host and we were sad to have to leave this perfect oasis! We hope to be back soon!

Wonderful idylic retreat

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time on Island C and felt a world away from the hustle and bustle of the world. The island is a study in contrasts, an off the grid retreat with all the trappings of home comfort - two bathrooms, two amazing showers - one outdoors even - and necessities of a good vacation close at hand: bbq, coffee maker, vcr/tv, and kayaks and canoe to putter about.

John and Jodi answered all the questions and concerns we had leading up to our trip. At first we were worried about being stranded for 8 days on the island but they indicated that any time we wanted to go to the mainland they would take us. And John did so - only once - we liked it too much on the island and on the lake to do otherwise. John did take us on a tour of the islands and pointed out many sites for a very enjoyable afternoon. Other than that we enjoyed the various vantage points of the small island and swam and kayaked every day. The clear skies were a delight at night and we even enjoyed the front row centre seats at the cottage windows for some big storms.

The main cottage is small but was ample for the three of us and our dog. it helped that there was the large sleeping loft and of course the wagon was a great spare room/retreat. We loved the sustainable approach to the cottage and landscaping and it was with regret we left the island after eight days. We'll try and come back next year as well. We felt it well worth the investment in time and money.

Thx again John and Jodi --- Daniel, Carlo, Kim and Luna

Owner's Response: Daniel, Carlo, Kim and Luna: Thank-you so much for that great review and for staying on our unique private island. Good people promote good vacations to new people that might want to experience staying on a private island. John was so impressed with Luna your dog and his relaxed behavior while out touring on the sail boat. I think it is important to note that we never want our guests to feel stranded so that is why John is always close by to take our guests to the mainland at any time. We look forward to welcoming you for next year. Enjoy the rest of your summer. John and Jody

Beautiful Island Getaway

  • 4 of 5

Beautiful, cozy property. Well maintained and very friendly owner. I would recommend this place for a small group of people (3-4 max). Best suited for 2 couples. Great location, just the right distance away from the city. Beautiful views of the stars at night. Fishing was good for Northern Pike and Smallmouth Bass. The marina is very close by with reasonable pricing on boat rental. Will definitely be back!

Owner's Response: Mark: Thank-you so much for that great review of our island property. It was our pleasure having your group as our guests. We know your group appreciated our island as much as we do and therefore took care not to disturb the natural environment. The night sky is incredible and simply must be seen to be appreciated. We certainly hope to have you and your group return. John and Jody
