Overview

About the property

In the midst of the Bay of Islands, you will find our quaint little hideaway where you can escape back to nature. Our Island is 2 acres of breath taking scenery, located approximately 5 minutes by boat from where you will park your car at Whitefish Falls. We will be waiting dockside to transport you to our Island.

We have chosen to develop the Island off grid but supply all normal amenities with a combination of solar panels, propane and whisper generator running intermittently when required by guests.

The island has predominant 80 to 100 year old white pine with a variety of other trees which include birch, oak, maple, cedar and one spruce, along with wild blueberry bushes. July is typically the season for wild blueberries but it can vary.

There is great swimming right off the dock and if canoeing or kayaking is your forte, this is the perfect location. The surrounding area is noted for great fishing, pickerel, pike, bass, perch and pan fish have been caught right off the island. The sunrises and sunsets here are indescribable, you simply have to see them. It is an artists and or photographers dream!

The backdrop to our island is the famous La Cloche Mountain Range. These mountains are located in the Canadian Shield, they are composed primarily of white

quartzite, and this was a renowned area for the famous Group of Seven Painters. You can make your time here whatever you desire it to be. A great vacation for two couples, a romantic getaway for one couple, a yoga retreat, or a chance to be alone with your thoughts, to paint, photograph nature at its best, compose music, poetry or just settle in with a selection of your favorite books.

You are the sole occupants on the island which allows for complete privacy.

The Main Cottage is a renovated circular farm grain bin surrounded with decks. It is complimented with a cobblestone addition. The cobblestones to build this addition were hand gathered directly off the island. You have incredible views from the decks and this is where you will view amazing sunsets. There is an outdoor kitchen with a propane barbecue with adjoining counter and sink with hot and cold running water.

On the main floor of the circular grain bin there is local red pine flooring accented with handmade Mexican tile. There is a living/dining area which includes a kitchen with cooking facilities and a full size sink. There is a semi circular stair to the loft bedroom that has local cedar plank flooring with a queen size bed. There is handmade Mexican tile throughout the cobble stone addition which includes a full size propane fridge, desk and storage area. The shower with hand painted Mexican tile and vanity shelf are in a separate room from the sink and toilet allowing privacy for both.

The Guest accommodation is a replica of a circa 1800 sheep wagon with sleeping accommodation for two in a double bed as was the tradition at that time. You will wake up to light filtering through a beautiful stained glass window.

There is an outdoor washroom with a flush toilet and sink with hot and cold running water. You must experience the circular Bamboo outdoor shower with both hot and cold running water.

On the lower deck, where you will view the sunrises there is a wood tub for those of you that don't wish to swim in the lake.

You may bring surf boards , paddle boards , kayaks, canoes etc.,there are 3 kayaks and a 2 person canoe available for exploring the area by water, to experience nature and take in the sound of the Loons. It is approximately one mile by water to Whitefish Falls, where you can purchase basic supplies along with many flavors of ice cream.

The Island and the area are referred to as a dark sky area. The minimal reflection of light from towns allows an unbelievable experience to view stars much like the original inhabitants of the area experienced before hydro and lights dominated our world.

There is much to see and experience in the immediate area at Whitefish Falls. It was home to one of the first hydro producing plants. You can see the ruins of that original plant with its water spillways, and imagine how it changed lives years ago.

There is a Bar/Restaurant in Whitefish Falls that has wing night on Thursday and on Friday they serve local Whitefish. There is a very quaint coffee/lunch cafe in a renovated historic building which was once a former Church.

If you wish to bring your own runabout, there is lots of dock space at the Island and a boat launch ramp at Whitefish Falls. For travelling to and from the Island and all your water sports such as kayaking and canoeing, you should bring your own personal life jackets.

For area experiences, there is a tour boat that runs out of Little Current all summer to Bay Finn, Killarney and the Benjamin Islands, if time permits for a day adventure. On Manitoulin Island, both Little Current, with its waterfront shops and marina and Kagawong, with the fudge shop, museum and Bridal Veil Falls make a great day trip.

There are 2 basic routes to get to our Island: from Sudbury go west on Hwy #17 and south on Hwy #6 to Whitefish Falls: from Tobermoy take the famous Chi Cheemaun ferry ( 2 hour trip) (bar and restaurant and gift shop on board) to South Baymouth reservations for the ferry are recommended then take Hwy #6 North to Whitefish Falls .

If you are coming from Sudbury you will go through Espanola there are two large grocery stores located here. This is where you may obtain your weekly grocery supplies. We suggest that you bring coolers to transport refrigerated items until you arrive at the Island. Coming from South Baymouth to Little Current there are also two grocery stores. Again coolers are suggested to keep your items refrigerated.

About John Gillespie

A lot of my employment has been on the Great Lakes, most recently assisting as a tour boat captain, proceeding that as a commercial tug boat captain.

This employment along with sailing in my leisure time has developed into a great enjoyment of being on and around the water.

In 2004 I purchased an undeveloped Island in the Bay of Islands called Island C.

Over the years I have been fortunate to have made friends with many talented people "Masters of their Craft" , who with their unique skills have turned Island C into a very special place we would now like to share .

John Gillespie purchased this cottage in 2004

Why John Gillespie chose Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands

My brother and I traveled to Manitoulin Island from Sudbury to look at a special breed of horses. This trip took us through the La Cloche Mountains and Whitefish Falls. I was awestruck by the beauty of the rock formations in the area. I returned home and on the internet found two private islands for sale in the immediate area of Whitefish Falls and the rest is history.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had the pleasure of staying here in July 2017. We stayed in the main cottage which was cozy and very clean. One of the many highlights during our stay was watching the sunrise on the deck while drinking our morning coffee and the beautiful clear night skies along with the magnificent sunsets. The queen size bed with the cotton sheets made it so easy to snuggle in and fall asleep at night while listening to the waves lapping on the shore below.

We had the option of cooking our meals inside the cottage or outdoors on the propane barbeque and we experienced both. The outdoor kitchen with hot and cold running water just makes cooking and clean up a breeze. The shower inside the main cottage is tastefully decorated with original Mexican tile it is quite large with a bench. The fact that it is completely separate from the toilet and sink is such a nice touch!

We spent a lot of time reading and just relaxing although we also enjoyed using the canoe and kayaking around the island. The main cottage has a comfortable leather love seat and there is a DVD player along with a collection of movies and a small flat screen TV which came in handy on cool or rainy evenings. Even though one does not want rain on their vacation we had a big thunder storm one evening. The light show and the whole ambiance of the experience is incredible.

The outdoor shower and the outdoor flush toilet were also accessible for us to use and after using the outdoor shower you simply don’t want to shower indoors AMAZING!!!! The outdoor cooling tub is a wonderful addition especially since one of us could not swim. It afforded the opportunity to cool off without jumping in the lake.

We cannot say enough good things about John our host he answered all our questions and more! Any problems or questions we had he was very accessible. He transported us to and from the island to the mainland when it was prearranged. However you can canoe or kayak to the main land it isn’t far. The boat traffic around the island is not heavy at all compared to some other cottage country areas.

There are also many things to see and do in the areas of Whitefish Falls and Little Current. Cute shops in Little Current and nice restaurants both in Whitefish Falls and Little Current. The boat tour out of Little Current – North Channel Cruise Lines is a must for a day trip.

I would highly recommend this place it is so welcoming very comfortable, clean and cozy. The only bad thing we can say it is ours

Beautiful, relaxing, and fun!

  • 5 of 5

We had a perfect stay. John and Jody were prompt and complete in communicating with us. John was available by phone and text throughout our visit, coming over as needed to deliver fuel, give us a ride back to the marina, etc. It was <5 min from the marina to the island house. Peaceful location, with a variety of views and seating from which to enjoy the scenery, breezes, shade, and water.

Our dogs were delighted to be free to roam, although we worried a little about the long-term impact of romping, curious dogs on this intact little ecosystem, filled with native plants, trees, birds, mosses, and lichens.

Our 10-year son and his friend swam every day, clambered around the island, played with squirt pistols, enjoyed a quick trip back to Espanola midweek, played board games, watched movies at night. Sit-on-top kayaks and canoes were fun, and my husband brought his own kayak for longer paddles around the Bay of Islands.

The house, systems, and outbuildings are thoughtfully arranged. Hot water, fridge, pumps run on propane in the background, electricity for lights, small appliances and our electronics off the whisper generator - we only ran that at night for a few hours and it was surprisingly quiet. The outdoor and indoor bathrooms were clean, well maintained, and very useable.

The kitchen is remarkably useable and has lots of things - French press carafe (no electricity!), regular coffee pot, small electric kettle, toaster, cheese box grater, variety of knives/pots/pans. Vintage gas-burner hot plate worked great for all but the biggest pots of water. A few basic staples - salt, pepper, sugar for hot beverages, handful of flour, not much beyond that. The fridge had to work hard to get up to full cooling, but was fine after the first 24 hrs. Bag of ice stayed frozen in the freezer - good for cold drinks. No oven, but you can use the grill in a pinch for warming/toasting/baking.

Lots of lanterns and flashlights and solar-light walkways.

Movie and book selections, perhaps not the most popular ones, but something to choose from. Only games were Scrabble, cribbage board, and playing cards, at least that we found. Appreciated the battery-powered radio too!

Excellent boat watching was had from the tub deck. Bring along a pair of binoculars to scan around the bay. Lots of local bird and other wildlife - a few rare sightings of beavers and mink with the multitudes of geese, loon, gulls. We caught a few little fish off the dock and island.

A perfect place for us

  • 5 of 5

We chose this area for a week's holiday because we wanted to kayak the Bay of Islands, and because the cottage/island seemed so different from the usual place we might stay. After a morning on the water, it was so nice to spend hot afternoons, in a breeze that normally could be found at one end, or the other, of the island. We used the cooling pool and swam right off the dock every day. It is unusual, in our experience, that a cottage plays such a part in our memories of a holiday, but this cottage/sheep wagon/outdoor shower/outdoor washroom/decks/cooling pool etc. does just that. We could not help but appreciate the vision and the work that went into making this place so unique. Looking at the outdoor washroom and shower, and even the main building, you may not be impressed. When you see the insides of each, you have to be surprised. Solid construction, amazing use of tile, unusual but well done elements we will be appreciated each day. Do not be put off by the name "sheep wagon". After the first night we slept there every night, and loved it. The inside of the cottage, might be a bit small for more people, or if it rained a lot, but with the decks, the sheep wagon, the cooling pool, the outdoor 'dining' area, the lake for swimming, it was the perfect place for us. We never felt isolated. We were never far from shore, and John was always available if we needed anything. We had a pretty good idea what this place was like before we went and we were still pleasantly surprised. A great holiday!

Spectacular

  • 5 of 5

Our family enjoyed this property very much. It was very clean . Very well stocked as far as linens and towels. John was a great host and very accommodating. Customer Service was beyond our expectations. The fishing was amazing . The Kayaking was a highlight. There were many spots on the island to enjoy. When it was windy we could leave the dock and go to the deck on the South side . The outdoor shower was a bonus . Nothing like a bent pine and a full moon as your view from the shower!!! Our boys enjoyed the wagon and I the loft in the main cottage. Views from everywhere. It really was beyond our expectations. I didn't want to leave.

Splendid week away -- better than advertised!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic week on the island, the weather was superb, which really helped.

What was great about the island was that regardless of the position of the sun or the breezes, there was always a sitting area that met your needs at the time.

We would definitely return.

The host, John, goes out of his way to ensure that you have everthing you need and he even checks up occassionally to ensure that nothing is amiss.

You can't go wrong here!

Loved it!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 had a terrific time at the island! We stayed 4 nights and enjoyed every minute: swimming around the island, dipping in the hot tub, watching videos on a rainy day and sleeping in the sheep caravan. John even took us sailing around the island!
