About Brian and Catharine

We (Brian, Catharine and Eloise) live in Thunder Bay and enjoy escaping to our cottage whenever we can. We love sharing our getaway with guests and strive to make your stay as easy and enjoyable as possible.

Brian and Catharine purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Brian and Catharine chose Ontario

A gorgeous lakefront property on spectacular north shore of Lake Superior. And yes we do have lake access right out front so you are welcome to bring your water toys, go for a quick dip or just sit on the shore and enjoy the view.

What makes this cottage unique

Quiet, private, peaceful getaway with all the amenities including a hot tub. Scenic hiking trails for all abilities overlooking Lake Superior and surrounding islands.

Guestbook comments from the manager

What a chilly a weekend! (minus 30 degrees C) The pellet stove and the hot tub definitely helped to keep us warm from those bone chilling winds. Il fait du BRRRR!!

We have rented Loon's Nest before (a few times) and we absolutely loved the new decor and all the comforts of home (The robes are a great touch)

We were happy to spot a pair of Loons yesterday around 6 pm, quite possibly the first for 2017?!

We will come back!

P.S. didn't need 'bug juice'

The single beds are heavy and we ask that you don't try to push them together if you are a couple, but lost the coin toss for the master bedroom. The third sleeping area is in the living room on the sleeper sofa. We recommend pulling the mattress off the couch and put it on the floor in front. There are linens in the hallway closet and thicker blankets on top of the dryer.

We have two fire pits at the cottage. It would be appreciated if you could supply your own firewood. Sometimes there is some left overs from previous guests. It is also recommended to bring and axe to split your wood (be careful). Please do not remove any live trees for burning. Please make sure to keep your fires small, attended, and properly extinguished before leaving the cottage or going to bed. Thank you.

Charming getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely 2 night stay at the Loon's Nest in late December. The setting is extremely peaceful (lake view and hiking trails) and the amenities were splendid (decor, hot tub and kitchen). Thank you, Catherine and Brian! We hope to be back soon.

Very clean, comfortable, modern and true to what was promised in the description of the rental.

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful location, just far enough from the waterfront but close enough to enjoy the beautiful view. The natural surroundings are what make this property a truly relaxing experience, and it is definitely worth the drive from wherever one is coming from. The yard was neat and well-kept. The fire pits and BBQ well- maintained and everything was very presentable upon arrival.

The interior of the cabin was clean and comfortable. Everything was labelled, including drawer contents and light switches, which was very helpful! Instructions on how to use the heat systems, hot tub, electronics, appliances etc. were very clear. Very cozy, modern and beautifully furnished/decorated to set the mood alongside the natural surroundings. Additional helpful extras included games and movies for use, extra blankets and towels, bathrobes for the hot tub, common cooking/baking ingredients and a map to the nearby hiking trails.

Very pleased with the quality of our stay and will definitely recommend this spot!!

Great visit to the Loon's Nest

  • 4 of 5

We had a great stay at the Loon's Nest. A very nice spot. The online description was accurate and the cabin was clean and well maintained. We had nice walks nearby and enjoyed a visit to Fort William Historical Park and to both a local potter and a local cheese maker.

Calm, peaceful and amazing

  • 5 of 5

The cottage (more like a home) is very well equipped and the decor is simply beautiful. We enjoyed quiet evenings by the campfire or cozied up to watch a good moovie (quite the selection!) Being never more than 45 minutes away from activities was quite pleasant. I would recommend this place to annyone; perfect for just a couple or a whole family to enjoy. Oh! And the hot tub was a nice touch, especially after a long hike up Mink Mountain Trails. Thank you Catherine and Brian for sharing your little slice of paradise!

Lovely Cottage and Vacation Experience

  • 5 of 5

Our family enjoyed the peace and tranquility of the Loon's Nest. The cottage is tastefully decorated and includes all of the extras that make it feel like home. Our family admired the setting out of doors, roasted marshmallows at the fire pit, played games (provided at Loon's Nest), pieced puzzles, soaked in the hot tub, and just enjoyed relaxing together all with the beautiful background of Thunder Bay.

Brian and Catharine have done an excellent job and we were not disappointed. Each room has been well-thought out and decorated beautifully. The property manager was very helpful and did all she could to make sure our needs were met.

We have already shared photos and our time at the Loon's Nest with friends and family and would encourage them to stay there if they were ever in Thunder Bay.

While in Thunder Bay, we hiked in Sleeping Giant Provincial Park (gorgeous!), mined at the Amethyst Mine Panorama (astonishing!), feasted at Rooster's Bistro in downtown Thunder Bay (amazing food!), played mini golf, rode in a sailboat around the Bay with Harbor Sailing Tours (fantastic!), and ate at Neebing Restaurant (highly recommend their BBQ nachos.) After all of our traveling around Thunder Bay, it was relieving to know we were coming back to a comfortable cottage to rest and spend our evenings in.

Truly, everything about the Loon's Nest met and exceeded our expectations. We would definitely stay there again!

We had a great weekend at the Loons Nest! Everything was as advertised, and very clean. The hot tub was pre heated to 97 and was ready for us to use. We plan on coming back someday in the future!
