As an Idaho native, I grew up in Idaho as well as completed my BA here. I returned to Idaho after receiving my graduate degrees and started teaching at Boise State University in the Business School. I 'retired' last January and am currently enjoying living full time on our ranch.
We fell in love with this property after first seeing it on cross country skis in February with 2-3 feet of snow. The beauty of the water, mountains and snow covered scenery enchanted us. We skied all along Big Creek, but couldn't get to the Island to see it--we were so enamored with the rest of it, we bought it without seeing the Island or much of the Payette
River. This included selling our house in Boise and moving to Cascade full time.
We are in a beautiful mountain valley at about 5000'. I drove through this area on my way to the University of Idaho from southern Idaho. I always thought this valley would be the a fantastic place to live given the environment and the recreational opportunities that abound here. It only took about 18 years, but here we are!! Wandering the trails on the Island or watching our elk herd migrate to the Island each morning is the type of enchantment we would like to share with you.
We spent a week here over the holidays, and we're so pleased. The retreat is thoughtfully appointed. Lots of blankets and linens, non perishable pantry items like flour and vegetable oil, and even marshmallow roasting sticks. Since the temperature mainly hovered around 0 degrees Fahrenheit, we didn't get to use the marshmallow roasters, but we did enjoy snowshoeing and cross-country skiing around the property every day of our stay.
The views are lovely, the hosts are welcoming, and this was one of my favorite vacation rentals we've ever stayed in. There were even fresh holiday-themed flower arrangements around the house on our arrival. Can't wait to come back.
One note: the retreat is in a rural area, and the internet here can be spotty or difficult. A power outage prior to our stay had knocked out the wifi, and it took a couple of days to sort out. We had planned to use the wifi to watch movies with our kids, download ebooks, etc, to enjoy by the fire. It's best to be prepared and download your media in advance, just in case. I imagine this is much less of a concern in the summer, when there's more opportunity to unplug and spend countless hours outside.
My wife and 4 kids thouroughly enjoyed our time here. Took several hikes across the island and my 3 boys especially enjoyed catching frogs at the stream below the retreat. Just minutes from excellent fishing from Cascade, horsethief, and warm lake reservoir and we hit all 3 while there.
Hosts Lynette and Harry were fantastic. They were always available when we had questions but we're never obtrusive to our stay.
We were very comfy and would certainly come back. If considering a stay here you won't be disappointed!
We loved the place, the view, the privacy and the host family, Lynette and Harry. They were gracious and open, and the home is lovely, classy and so well put together. We are definitely coming back! It was the BEST experience we've had with renting a property for a getaway.
A few years (2012) ago my best friend and I rented this property and were completely taken aback by the hospitality of our hosts and the beauty of the propety. Fast forward to May of this year. My friend and I decided we needed to share our experience here--this time to celebrate friendships. Four ladies who have known each other for many years had the time of their lives! As we expected, we were welcomed with open arms by Harry, Zeek, and intermittent visits by the felines--such a delight! This property is so secluded--we spent the entire weekend watching the elk graze, the eagles soar, the herrons chant, the birds feed, and the clouds intermittently roll by. The fire pit was a favorite gathering place. It also happened to be the Kentucky Derby so we all brought our floppy hats, decorated them for the occasion, and shouted at the large screen TV with our choices for the race--lots of room to have so much fun. As mentioned in other reviews, the apartment is fully stocked--we didn't need to bring anything but food and drink. We had the pleasure of dining with Harry on Friday night (Lynnette was out of town). We had good intentions of patronizing the local establishments, but having been here before, I knew it would take a lot to get us out. We did not leave the property all weekend. Lynnette is a Master Gardener and we had the pleasure of enjoying spring blooms from her endless hours of hard work. Her gardens are beautiful. They continue to improve this property in every way. You'd be foolish not to rent it. Thank you Lynnette and Harry for making us feel so welcomed and appreciated. We will see you next year for the Donnelly Derby!
Had a great time at the cabin with my wife and two small boys. Everything was as expected, great wood fire place and views for days. Cant wait to book a trip in the summer to enjoy the river, thanks for such a wonderful place to spend the New Years!
This was an absolutely wonderful place to stay! Lynette and Harry are amazing hosts and made sure we had everything we could possibly need. The condo area is fully stocked with kitchen, comfy beds and an amazing view. We also utilized their amazing 500 acre property for a cancer survivors retreat. Where we were able to access the river, hike along the secluded island, and enjoy the wonderful scenery - it was perfect. The property and the hosts are amazing and we hope to return next year.
